Even though these first five pages are set five years in the past, they still work masterfully with the Shut Eye comic to establish the theme of inevitability. We don't know how Steban knows the King or why exactly he felt the need to wander the desert in Shut Eye in the first place, but we do know that his past is full of mistakes and enemies. Given that he likely has so much to answer for, it will be fascinating to see how his outwardly suave and collected personality develops in response to the weight, the danger of his unresolved past. I imagine that the Devil's ominous warning at the end of Shut Eye has been in his head ever since. What will it mean for Steban (and Martin and Delilah) when his past inevitably catches up with him, when he must confront the Devil at "the crossroads"?
