Hey guys,
I'm back, dropping some new content! And this is really something new. But before I get into that, let me just talk a bit about my motivation for branching out a little bit with this one.
If you don't care, here's the TL;DR: Got frustrated, started a podcast.
The long version is that I got increasingly frustrated while writing scripts for new videos in the last two months. Remember that Iraq-War video I talked about? That's actually a good example. I felt like that was a topic that not only I wanted to talk about, but that also offered valuable takeaways. After reading three books on the subject and writing the script, it just didn't work. It wasn't "writer's block" that's usually not an issue for me. Rather I just couldn't justify someone else spending their time watching a video about this NOW.
I'm sure quite a few of you go into the upcoming US. Election with a sense of anxiety. An odd feeling that something is gonna come to blows. I feel the same way. And while I'm insanely grateful for the amount of attention I get from you folks, I want to be resourceful with your time. Doing a video on the Iraq war just didn't seem to add anything to the current moment. I still want to do that video and many others I worked on and then scraped, but that is something for when the dust has settled a bit. Staying away from social media for the last month had a similar motivation behind it.
Anyway, one good thing did come out of this. I finally landed on a topic to kick off my history podcast with. Many political commentators try to find a word for this sense of dread about upcoming political developments, and they usually land on "Weimar." How often have you seen someone else compare the US right now to Germany before the nazi revolution? I've lost count. Historical comparisons are never perfect but I do feel like it's worth having an idea of how German democracy died, in the current political moment. That is something much more relevant than the Iraq war, I feel like.
So, I bring you my new podcast called "The Iron Dice". An immersive history podcast narrated by yours truly. The first series of Episodes will take you through the political struggles of Weimar Germany. Starting at the collapse of the old Bismarckian empire at the end of World War 1, over the open carnage in the streets of Berlin, all the way to the dawn of Germany's darkest hour. You can find it on my second YouTube channel or everywhere podcasts can be found.
You don't need to worry about me making fewer videos now. The podcast is a project I should be able to run simultaneously making no cut-backs to YouTube content. Although, it has been a while since I've been as passionate about something as I am about this series. Also, once again, I'm so grateful for your support. If I'd always had to be chasing the algorithm, doing content like this wouldn't be possible.
I will upload a video to the "Three Arrows" YouTube channel later this week talking about possible ways for the Republicans to steal the election and reminding folks how important this one is.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the first episode of "The Iron Dice", which is also the start of our first series called "The Fight for the Republic".
