Homelander is one of the best written bad guys in a long time and character mastered by Anthony Starr. There are three important things. 1. He is self aware. He knows that he is not ok. He also said in S2 about Ryan that he doesnt want his son to go through the same what he did. Homelanders past makes him narcisistic psychopath. Grown up without love and warmth creates a twisted self esteem. Then you get attention, everybody says that you are so special and you get treated like a god. Everybody loves you and that self esteem is bound to getting attention and praise. 2. Anthony Starr shows that you dont always have to speak in acting. You act with your eyes and facial expressions. Last time somebody did that so fucking good was with James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano in the "The Sopranos". 3. Villains dont always have to be written as black and white. Good villains are more than that. It was actually smart speech he gave to Ryan in S2. Also homelander has been lied to his whole life and that is the reason he is sick of it. One reason too why he is mentally what he is.
