Hereditary (2018) FULL UNCUT Reaction!!!

It's a pretty f-k'd up movie. Annie's family is a pawn from the first frame and no actions in the movie are their own. Even how some of the scenes move in from the model home into a real scene show how the family is being watched and manipulated. I had to watch a few explanation videos and interviews with writer/director Ari Aster before compleltely getting the story. Basically Annie's mother was the Queen of a cult that worshipped a demon named Paeman, they believed if they could put it in the proper vessel he would enrich them with information and wealths. We know from Annie's speech at the grief groom that both her father and brother were mentally ill, her father literally starved himself and his brother hanged himself because he felt Annie's mother was trying to put people into him. There's also a deep root of mental illness and it's "hereditary" nature throughout the film. It could be the men in Annie's family have mental illnesses that prevent them from being a proper host for the demon. It seems even from Joan's speech about the loss of her son and grandson that may be they even tried non family members but it's obvious it has to genetic which is why they latch onto Annie's family. We also hear from Annie that her husband Steven put his foot down when Peter was born and removed contact from her mother. So Grandma Leigh had no way to get to Peter to perform the ritual to put Paeman into him. Once family ties were restored she tried to get her hands into the newly born Charlie and put the demon into her. Hence the very disturbing "breastfeeding" scene she was re-creating. That is simply Annie's way of coping is to make a "neutral" view of the scene so she can process it that way. Its just how she copes. The flashing blue light we see throughout the movie from time to time is actually the demon. So there is a very slight element of the supernatural. But the majority of everything that happens is the cult and it's grip on the family. Annie's first scene at the funeral mentions "all the new and strange faces she's never met and that her mom would be happy, that her mom was super private and she didn't really know much about her". The cult symbol is everywhere from the grandmother's necklace at the wake, to Annie's necklace, upstairs where Leigh's body is laid out, and it's very subtle but if you watch it back, it's also on the telephone pole where Charlie will unfortunately lose her life. It's not super-clear if Charlie's death is caused by the cult intentionally because they couldn't have known or controlled the events at the party or that Charlie would eat nuts but the demon Paeman might be able to. We do know there was only one road to town and there was a deer right in the road where the pole is/was. Maybe they didn't intend to kill her but just switch her as a vessel. The rest of the movie is just the cult revealing themselves, Annie gets taken over briefly by Paeman when Steven is burned alive until she kills herself in the attic in probably one of the most disturbing scenes I've seen in a long time. Then Peter jumps out of the window and dies or is knocked out of the body and it's taken over by Paeman. It's an interesting mix of slow burn tension, pathos and outright horror. If you're not one for these type of slow-burn very disturbing movies, do not watch Ari Aster's next one "Midsommar". I'm not sure if it's more disturbing but it's up there lol.

Dang. I literally just watched this for the first time last week. Guess another viewing is in order. On another note….should we be expecting a post on the new Suicide Squad movie soon? I want to hold off on that if you’ll be doing that one here soon, but it’s difficult, lol.
