The kidnappers pose as family members selling of girls to work in the rear palace, the girls get paid a wage part of which is sent to her "family" her term of service is 2 years. Lead compounds were used for centuries in cosmetics, and were toxic due to the absorption through the skin or a baby's fingers patting the nurses cheek then sucking on those fingers. Lead paints weren't banned until recently.

A few side infos regarding this show (not 100% fact checked): A born son is always more important than a daughter because the first born son will inherit the position of the father and in this case the son would've been the heir to the "throne" or more like to the empire. Daughters usually get married for political reasons or to reward high ranking allies, like a general in the army and so on. It isn't exclusive to china these practises and are found all around the world for a long time. An emperor can have pretty much as many concubines as he likes but the one birthing a son are more valued by tradition but tradition is not always in synch with feelings so the red-haired woman is (per rumor) more favored than the blue haired woman but with a son she would win the power struggle and would be the "main" wife so to speak. Regarding MaoMaos situation, it was pretty normal to sell your family members, like a son to the army or a working place (smiths, farmers and so on) or a daughter to be a servant out of poverty reasons, the chid earns money living and working at the place they got sold and the family receives a part of their income and if i am not mistaken a bit extra for the transaction in the first place, sold people usually don't have many rights, like slaves around the world so they can't even say "i am not related to these bandits and i was kidnapped" because no one would listen, i believe at that point in history slaves weren't really a thing anymore in china so it is basically a loophole bandits use to still make a living and most of the time the buyers do not care because they need the people. Punishments for sold people are really brutal so trying to escape would certainly end with a painful death (if they are lucky) Absolutely love the show, it has many small details about culture and etiquette while looking totaly beautiful! Can't wait to jump to the next episode!
