The finale is magnificent. I think you will love season 2. The ending is a sneak peek of characters for later in the story, some in season 2, so don't worry about it!

"In their last moments, people show you who they really are."
With his back to the wall, Askeladd was completely willing to lay down his life to make Canute king and to save Wales from destruction.
Although it was in a twisted sort of way, Thorfinn and Askeladd did care for each other to an extent. Thorfinn spent 11 years with Askeladd in an attempt to get revenge, to put it in perspective, Thorfinn was six when his father died, really Thorfinn knew Askeladd longer than he knew his own father. And if you go back to episode 4 of this season when Thors was dying, the scenes were very similar with Thofinn and Thors, and Thofinn and Askeladd.
In his dying moments Askeladd could have pushed some of the blame of killing Thors off of himself and onto Floki, after all he was there in the room with them. However, that would have set Thorfinn out on a whole new quest for revenge and that isn't what Askeladd wanted. Instead he reminded him of who he really was, the son of Thors, and used his final breath to try to push Thorfinn on the right path. Like I said, it may have been twisted, but there was some degree of caring and respect between the two.
Askeladd was the true main character of season 1, or the prologue, next season will be all about Thorfinn and how he plans to live his life from now on, and this is where the main story line begins. The characters at the end of the season were indeed characters in season two and beyond.
It's worth noting that season 2 will in fact have end credit previews of the next episodes, however they can be a bit spoiler-ish so I wouldn't recommend watching them.

One of the best series of the last decade and overall just one of the best manga of all time at this rate and that's without overhyping or anything. Season 2 is going to be very different but even better, in my opinion.
And yeah, Askeladd basically knew there was no other way out of that situation than to just let himself get killed to save Wales and make Canute king. One of the smartest characters I've ever seen, down to the last minute of his life he was a scheming mastermind that somehow got the best out of a pretty much deadend situation.
Thorfinn had spent his entire life chasing Askeladd for his revenge and in the end that revenge was taken from him. His purpose in life is gone the moment Askeladd dies. His face when looking at Canute is just expressing emtpiness. Just like Askeladd said - Thorfinn never thought about what to do once Askeladd dies.
And I feel like that is such a powerful message. How many people in life think about one particular thing they want to do or NEED to do but then once they have done it, they feel hollow and ask themselves "What now?"
