I had a different take on that. What I got was, she saw what horrific things askeladd and his crew did without being punished at all. And if they didn't get punished, then there is no God to punish them, so stealing the ring doesn't matter in the end.

The writing in this is just so good. These previous episodes were somewhat setting up to make Askeladd appear more likeable to the viewer with those moments between him and Thorfinn and then the small snippet of his past. But then this episode takes us right back to reality - the one where we kind of forgot that this guy and his group of men are invaders and they do what many invaders did.

Fortunately this is the last episode like this for the rest of the season. The rest will be focused on Askeladd, Thorfinn, and Canute's characters and setup for season 2. Anne said that she was "elated" at the end of the episode because no matter how bad she felt about stealing a ring, she didn't just massacre an entire village. In her eyes, (and she hoped in the eyes of God) that surely what she did was forgivable when in comparison to what Askeladd's men just did.
