It might be a reach but i think that Cocytus is based on Takakatsu Honda a great warrior who is inspired by Benkei a great warrior monk. Cocytus is crazy cool, pun intended i think every guardian can use a specific type of element, his type is ice, Demigure is fire, Gargantua is earth he has no will of his own which is a letdown, Nabe has lightning.

So people who have gone past the limits of strength people usually associate with their race. People in this world think that 5th tier magic is in the realm of heroes for example.
