December 2024 Mailbag

Hey everybody!

Another month, another mailbag! Ask me anything! I'm currently working on a video about Jon Stewart's return to The Daily Show for the election so now's the time to hit me with anything about that. Also first mailbag since the NCIS video dropped and I learned a lot about Israel and Palestine and also NCIS if you're interested in that.

Also, also! It's nearing the end-of-the-year and I'm going to be doing all of my normal end of year stuff, so this is a good time to talk about that too!

I'll post the link here as always but I'll be live on Monday 12/9 @ 5pm Pacific so submit your questions before then...

Have you ever thought about being a guest on the These Are Their Stories Podcast?

Blair Mason

Absolutely! I'll be making debrief videos like this going forward for every public video, showing the stuff from the cutting room floor: https://www.patreon.com/posts/video-debrief-1-116024218

Are there any things you learned or side points that got cut from the NCIS video you would have liked to find space for? Or any of your other videos? I'd love to hear anything you were a little bummed got left on the cutting room floor.

Do you think there's a video to be made about Batman as a figure of law enforcement or is it already overdone? I know you already talked about superheroes in your Marvel video but these guys focus more on "terrorism" that "crime", so I was wondering if an angle could be found in analysing Batman as copaganda, maybe by looking at it through the lens of real world superhero-inspired vigilantes. Edit: Do you think the recent killing of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson counts as a vigilante action?

I wanted to ask your opinion as someone who still likes Law and Order and isn't entirely leftist or left-leaning. This isn't a loaded question or gotcha or anything like that. I wanted to ask if still liking Law and Order or if having some conservative beliefs means I am media illiterate or not. I watched your videos about L&O and Top Gun and it made me question whether I have bad taste because I still believe they have elements of value among problematic elements that may not hold up today. I also don't know if thinking that the shows aren't bad means I am media illiterate because I still think L&O and SVU have moments and episodes that are great and have good character development in a fair amount of places. My views have shifted in the last few years but still enjoy certain movies that other Breadtubers might not. Such as Big Joel's Over The Hedge movie review. I still like the movie a lot and disagree with him on that opinion. But I wonder if that means my opinion or interpretation is wrong because I always thought media and our opinions are still subjective. Same with Jack Saint's videos about dogs and politics. I still don't see the connection and disagree with the video. I feel paranoid that I have bad taste even if I find good things in some of the media I like and that it might hurt my abilities as an amateur writer working towards being a decent writer. Maybe a good writer one day. However, I feel like I am too old to make it toward being a great writer. (25 years old). That's the struggle of thoughts I've had. It's become more of a focus in the last few months and my anxiety just keeps growing.

1. This one is a little personal. I have a family member that is a big west wing fan. They are very smart and intelligent but as I have gotten older they seem to have more devotion to the democratic party than I have. They don't blindly support biden but they get very defensive when I offer some criticisms and they still want to see biden as a "good man" inspite of his actions with gaza. They have a lot of nostalgia for the Obama era as well. I have shown them your copaganda videos before and they really liked them but I'm worried about showing them your west wing retrospective. Have you had to navigate dynamics like this with family members or friends? If so do you have any tips? Where do you think some of the "Obama nostalgia" comes from? 2. Have you watched any of the legend of vox machina animated show from critical role? If so what are your thoughts? 3. You are in Seattle now where the CHAZ was in 2020 right? Have you tried doing any interviews with some of the local activists in Seattle who may have been part of that or are working on criminal justice reform at a local level? 4. Finally a fun question that I got from a podcast I listen to. What is something your parents never allowed you to do when you were a kid, that you started doing all the time the moment you moved out and could set your own rules for your living space? For me it was opening a new jar of peanut butter before i had finished scraping out the remaining residue of the nearly empty open jar. Best wishes. The coming year is gonna be hard for all of us but we have to look out for each other and build community support. Learn what your skills are and figure out what you can study to make yourself more prepared. We can't all farm our own food but some of us can pay to take a first aid class at least. EDIT: also, in case you haven't seen it. Here is a CBS report on cops illegally selling guns. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/police-selling-restricted-guns-posties/

Hello, I temporarily rejoined the Patreon to tell you that, I think my project, the 100 Most Acclaimed TV Episodes, a metalist (list compiled out of various sources) will probably not be done by the end of 2024, and I've been dealing with mental health problems and felt somewhat overwhelmed by the amount of material I'll comb through as I shift through various sources, the goal now is to finish the project by December 2026. I think a reason why I'm trying to halt progress on it is because The Atlantic's Best TV Episodes of 2011, is unavailable, even through the The Wayback Machine, and I want to beef up my list with as many available sources available. I also am waiting for a site that I found through my searches, called FilmsFatale, to update his Top 100 he made a few years back.

The Daily Show rose to popularity at a time when comedy felt like an emerging influence in how people talked about and engaged with politics. How do you think the relationship between humor and politics has evolved since the Daily Show's rise to popularity and how-- if at all-- has Stewart evolved alongside this shift?
