I'm so happy you finally got to this one. I never watched the original series until I picked up the Blu-ray this last year, but oddly, I've known this 3-part pilot episode since I was a teenager. Back then, this section of it was my favorite because I found it the most atmospheric and haunting. I still find it quite creepy and effective, especially with its use of music ( such as the distant female vocalist singing the German song when he escapes into the boat) but I agree with your assessment that it could have been better than it was. Incidentally, Richard Kiley was the voice of the taped tour guide in Jurassic Park that Hammond bragged about (spared no expense!) and Sam Jaffe (Herr Blum) was Judah's merchant who got tortured by the Romans in Ben-Hur.
