I understand your opinion, I was around then also. My opinion is that it was impactful, when I watched it on its original release, it had an effect on me. You're very much entitled to your opinion and so am I. Cheers!

The episode was not ahead of its time at all, many other shows on tv had LGBTQ guest stars and even regulars in some cases long before TNG came up with this story, there's literally nothing special about this and it's not what anyone around back then wanted (I know because I was around back then). And while this episode could be read as a trans episode by looking at it through a modern lens that wasn't the intention, that was TNG's take on the long promised "gay representation". But even if it had been a trans episode, it also wasn't special by doing that, other shows had usually male to female trans characters on screen. Star Trek has never been a particularly progressive show and had always played catch up, not even TOS was progressive, at best Star Trek was not backwards.

KingPin124 triggered much? Jesus Christ. I think considering the times we're in, both religion and conservatism would benefit from listening to a little criticism.

Ahead of its time sortof. For instance, this episode was not intended to have anything to do with transgender, even though an audience in 2025 might interpret it that way. That wasn't an idea that most people had really even thought of in 1992, though some had. Really this episode was meant to address gay issues, but because they didn't want to do it too on the nose they did this instead. You might find it ironic, but this episode has actually been one that has taken a fair amount of criticism from more progressive groups because it was viewed as chickening out.

I’ve considered this. One of the initial reasons for the instant grades was the claim that we influence each other in the discussion and if one person says they don’t like it the other one will lie and say they also don’t or something. However, I’ve realized that claim is stupid anyway so who cares.

I’m not a progressive, and it’s not that serious. Relax. I make fun of everyone, I don’t discriminate. No need to take it personal when it happens to be your turn.

This reaction could’ve definitely ended sooner. You guys tiptoe around your entire reaction, but then as soon as religion is brought up, Josh spends the entire rest of the video bashing religion and conservative types. Wow, man. I expected better. “Progressives” clearly aren’t as open minded as you pretend to be.

KingPin124

so this is not related to this review, but on the discussion of grades, I thought of an easy solution that accomodates both interests. Why not just have the discussion first and the grades at the end? That way the discussion isnt about justifying the grades, but you talk about the episode and then at the end we understand the grades you gave.

Just looked this up, hilarious!

You were 100% correct with LeVar "just showing up" with a beard and the prodction crew being like "ok... I guess we're filming Geordi with a beard this episode". LeVar normally wore a beard and had wanted to go back to one, and after this episode was told point blank that "Geordi does not have a beard". There is a great outtake on YouTube for the next episode where Data asks Geordi "didn't you have a beard?" and Geordi says "Yeah, but the producers didn't like it" and Data just shrugs and goes back to beep beep beeping on his console.

Even down to the ending, not solving things for the people involved.

Loved the pop for Geordi's beard. On a serious note, this is an S for me because this episode came to me at a time when this type of topic was not discussed on TV when I was growing up. It struck a chord with me as a queer person who, at the time, didn't even know I was queer. Good discussion on your part, much thanks 🖖

Dru Blood

Loved your discussion on this episode. The episode was definitely way before it's time. In line with "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" from TOS.
