Big love for this episode; not least because Michelle Forbes is simply amazing. But also because this inspired one of the official Doctor Who short stories I wrote for Big Finish.

Andy Frankham-Allen

This is an enjoyable episode. A Banger.

Crankygrandma

If I were them I’d just take a dook and float it out into space

Worf and Riker Ride Again

The floors are made from a Bovinefaecium alloy which scientifically prevents ghosts or people residing in subspace from falling through

Worf and Riker Ride Again

Any episode with Ro is at least an A. I love this episode, it’s great sci fi and Burton & Forbes really act well off each other. The only thing that bothers me is how they don’t sink through the floor / how they can breathe but it would be a bad episode if they were stuck in space or at the bottom of the ship the whole episode

Worf and Riker Ride Again

This episode and "Cause and Effect" are the ones I remembered the most as a kid. For that reason, if you had asked me which was the best Season of TNG, for the longest time I'd probably have said S5--but it's really just rose-colored lenses. It doesn't take away the fact that this episode is dumb as Hell. How come Laforge and Ro don't fall through the ship? How can they breathe oxygen? Why do they have to rush to get through a closing turbolift door? It's all so goddamn stupid and frustrating. Solid A tier.

Shortskirtsandexplosions

Ensign Ro! My biggest problem with this episode while I love it is, they can walk through walls tables if they don’t fall through the floors But it’s still fun And michell Forbes choose-up the scenery every time she is on the screen

Thicketdweller

I really like this episode, but it's not one of my favorties. A-Tier. Though I suspect that with a starring role for Ensign Ro, this is likely gonna be an S-tier for you guys. (I do love me some Ensign Ro.) And Ro and Geordi make for an excellent pair. Any extra insight into Bajorans is welcome as well, and we get a little bit about their religious beliefs, as the writers gradually begin to settle who and what the Bajorans are.

John

This episode is great, it has one kinda inescapable plot hole which is "why don't they go through the floors". But maybe there is some artificial gravity technobabble reason one could come up wtih. Doesn't really matter. This episode is just too much fun to be distracted by that. I love how pratical Geordi is about all this too. Does not for 1 second entertain the idea that he's a ghost. He's just like "nope, that's dumb, let's figure out what is really going on." Giving this one an S too. Even A+ feels a bit too low, it's just really dang good tv.

Mr Moxie

Hard sci-fi or fantasy sci-fi are both great, so long as the story and characters are there. My take on it all is that if you enjoy something, then it doesn't matter if others find your reasoning suspect or flawed. It's not about them. The flipside of that, of course, if that if someone tries to diminish my own opinion on a series because I am less caring about the realism than they are (or more caring) then I will laugh at them and tell them to suck it in late 90s DX style.

Boggle

I don’t mind people taking it seriously, as long as they take it with a grain of salt. Sci-fi should, and can, be more accurate to science and nature, it makes it more fun a meaningful. It just shouldn’t be the absolute rule is all, as long as the story provides the ultimate meaning.

PIG

If you're wondering how they eat and breathe and other science facts. Then repeat to yourself it's just a show, I should really just relax.

Encarta

Geordie yeets a guy into space. If this isn't an S for you please get your blood work done.

Wrestling With Gaming

I imagine that there must be a certain portion of matter that is in a permanently phased state. There has to be some atmosphere or they wouldn't be able to hear each other, either.

Jeffrey P

The same way that they can be seen and heard by anyone else in phase, I imagine. Energy forces, such as light, sound, and gravity still apply to them. That's good or their synaptic functions would have also ceased.

Jeffrey P

This is why you don't let anybody other than O'Brien run the damn transporter.

KevinH

Wish we got to hear Riker's eulogy.

Mike Rogers

Exactly, which is why it never bothered me that it was left unexplained. But then again I was never the Trekker that nitpicked every detail and shout “but whatabout….!!!”

Column Meanie

I honestly never cared about the "why aren't they falling through the floor" thing. I mean, I get it, especially with the hardcore Trekkers, but it was never anything that bothered me as it's science fiction and the technobabble supplied is good enough. It's a good episode. But not one of the best. At least imo. 'B.'

Boggle

This one is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. Yes this episode is good on its own. But I always feel I give it even more credit than even that. Nice to see the, “ How will people react to me being dead,” idea being played out. Data’s solution for a funeral is so awesome. A for me. On Another note! They actually listen to Worf’s security concerns this episode. Even Worf seems surprised. He’s like, “Really!? Thank you sir!”

Nathan Walker

This is the one time where Worf doesn't get shut down over a legit security concern... and he's so happy! Forget falling through the floor, why doesn't Geordi draw in the engineering pool table "Hai Data this is Geordi. Ro and I are alive n phase cloaked lol Plz help" when Data is zapping the fields in engineering

Loot Narsbaar

If you guys make it to Picard Season 1, please remember the transporter chief from the intro!

Patrick Smith

A for Data and Geordi. I love their friendship. Wish we got more bro moments.

Shanelle

Fun episode if you don't think too hard about the premise.

JB

If they tried to explain not falling through the floor, they'd need to explain how they can talk with each other but no one else can hear. In the words of Harrison Ford, this episode "ain't that kinda movie, kid".

JB

Would make for some wild wrestling moves

Evan Guthrie

Fun episode. Can’t think about it too much, or you start to question everything about it. But, fun!

tyranusfan

A Geordi Episode that legitimately works and doesn't involve some silly romance plot? And involves Ro too! Hell yeah! Easy A for me, borderline S.

Paul

I don't mind them not falling through the floor. Head cannon says the gravity plating in the decks somehow counteracts the phase dimensional techno mumble. However, HOW CAN THE BREATHE? And how long can they go without water? And what happens when they have to go to the bathroom? Do they have phase shifted toilet paper? I feel like we need a remake: Geordi and Ro pee/poop all over the ship, get hangry and yell at each other because they can't eat anything, and die of dehydration. Could be epic . . . or maybe its best to just not think about it and enjoy the episode. Love this one despite the "Wormhole Xtreme" script problems. (drop a message if you get the reference)

Kyle Stewart

Jesus !

Sixto

It’s a great sci-fi episode wrapped in a really nicely driven character story, and then Geordi kills a dude ?! SSS!

Sixto

The grav plating turned insubstantial along with the floor, and the plating on the deck below pulled her through?

Nolan

Gravity nets generating an electro-static field that affects all matter, phased or not. If they were on a planet, they'd be fucked.

Nolan

I finally saw the movie after years of seeing that scene referenced. Imagine my surprise and disappointment upon realizing it was just a goofy sex scene and not some grand moment of reconnection between the living and the departed.

Nolan

I've always thought the not-falling-through-floor thing has to do with the artificial gravity system in the floors that, however the sci-fi physics works, it has the same effect on phased matter. Gravity they say can cross dimensions, so... Honeatly its one of those things that they dont need to explain, trust our intelligence to notice it, but to also know its not a big deal.

Chris Mickelson

Me when I was young: “Mom, then why don’t they fall through the floor?” Mom: “Just watch the show and let me enjoy my fucking drink.”

PIG

This is a GREAT episode that gives me everything i want. I love the wacky sci-fi of it. I like to see how Geordi and Ro work together. Since Ro thinks she is dead we get a little peek into the Bajoran religion and on top of that we get to see Data show real humanity by honoring his friend. good stuff all around, easy A from me.

harrypothead42024

Love this episode, and I hope you guys will too. Sure, you have to suspend your disbelief a little bit (why don't they fall through the floor?), but the story is good, so that doesn't bother me at all. I really like the surprise pairing of Geordi and Ro, and their differing perspectives of their situation. This episode is what I enjoy; a cool sci-fi concept with good character moments and some heart as well. S.

Ryan Caulfield

Great episode for oft overlooked Geordie and Ro. Riker at the party with his trombone is iconic

Cirk Bejnar

S for me, even though you have to overlook some of the science problems (kind of like watching Star Wars…). Love this episode though.

Ron Hubbard Jr

Some explanation like gravity plating works, except that then in "In Theory", how did someone fall halfway through the floor?

Steven Linden

Star Trek does “Ghost”. It’s a shame we never got a Geordi and Ro behind a potter’s wheel moment. All jokes aside, it’s a fun story and I love that we’re along for the ride with Geordi and Ro. I do wish they had thrown in a line explaining why they don’t fall through the floors (maybe something to do with the artificial gravity in the floors?) And can Data please plan my funeral? What a great party! “A” for “aren’t really dead”.

Column Meanie

An "I've seen it before" episode that delivers so much fun!

KMScudder

I like that we get to explore some of Ro's character in this one, and the premise is very fun (even if a little flawed) and makes for some great scenes. An A for me.

Gruzz

“If we can teach Ro Laren humility... we can do anything.”

Jovet

Overall this episode is fine. I like the idea of celebrating lives, not mourning them. But what really bugs me is Geordi and Laren can walk straight through walls BUT NOT FALL THROUGH THE FLOOR! It's a trope that shouldn't bug me, and didn't the first time I watched this. But it really annoys me.

Jovet

That sums up my thoughts on it.

Jovet

This is the kind of story that can only really be told in a sci-fi or paranormal setting, and the final result is pretty fun from what I remember. RIP to the romulan that got absolutely yeeted into the void. How did Ro and Geordi not fall through the floor? Hell if I know. Gravity plating or something. Stargate SG-1 did a couple similar episodes during it's run, and one time in a somewhat self parodying manner the writers added that very question into the script.

Timothy Nikiforovs

I really like this one, Geordi and Ro's different attitudes about the afterlife are interesting. And I like it in spite of how they obey silly ghost rules as far as floors, et cetera. A-tier

Alexander McKechnie

Gravity plating interacted with them like the other thing did. Now as far as air and why they can breathe no idea. The easiest way to say they are alive is to blow an sos into data's ear. Lol

Eric Wilson

I don’t see how gravity can affect something with no substance.

Phil Ken Sebben

Gravity plating. As far as air, yeah, that makes no sense.

Eric Wilson

The falling through the floor can be explained through gravity plating or something, but the air makes no sense. If they can breathe, blow on another crew members neck in Morse code.

Eric Wilson

If they were truly out of phase they would not be able to breathe and would fall through the floor. A neat idea that the science advisor should have killed. C

Phil Ken Sebben

Grav plating is the number one answer.

Keith S

Really fun episode as long as you don't think about it too hard. (How can they breathe? Why don't they fall through the floor?)

Steven Linden

But why don’t they fall through the floor? 😆 This episode’s just a ton of fun. What a pairing with Ro (religious) and Geordie (not) dealing with what it means to die. Solid A-tier for me, comfort watching.

Andrew F.

I’ve always enjoyed this episode. My favorite part is the exchange between the secular Geordi and the religious Ro about their situation. I also loved watching Geordi and Ro help Data figure out what was happening. Such great writing…A-Tier! Now bring on the next episode PLEASE!!!

Raphael Gaytan

The breathing is an interesting problem, but I always liked to think that since they leave a "trail", they're pulling atoms out of phase as they pass through them thus they can get some oxygen.

Evan Guthrie

The artificial gravity (I will not elaborate)

Evan Guthrie

“LaForge to engineering, take the warp engines offline!” “I’m sorry, WHO to engineering??”

Evan Guthrie

Imagine the shenanigans Alex and Josh would get up to if they could phase through walls and become invisible... 🤣

The Ninth Doctor

I always remember this one fondly because it gives us a fresh perspective (characters being "dead" who can see how the crew reacts to their "deaths"), the cool scifi setup of them being "ghosts" and figuring out what's going on / what to do about it, and some nice character moments from those who are grieving the loss of Geordi and Ro.

Forbidden Donut

I always wondered that, too. It seems to be 'the script needs it to work that way' is the true answer, and I'm not sure if it can be justified within the lore of the show.

Forbidden Donut

Biggest question I heard about this episode was why didn't Geordi and Ro fall though thee floor? Great episode thoug I give it an A.

Keith S

Really enjoy this one, voted S, one of my favourites of the season. Geordi and Ro get the chance to work together and solve a mystery. My only criticism is that it all seems rushed towards the end.

Paul Rymer

I like this episode, but it always bugged me they don’t phase through the floor. B.

John M.

It had good character growth for Ro. I could feel the shock when they appeared at their own wake. And I always wondered what Riker was going to say. A solid “A” episode. It just did reach the “S” tier for me.

startrekiborg

I love this episode. It's just a good execution of a sci-fi concept that allows for some darn good character moments as they reflect on death. As for any "why don't they phase through the floor and into space?" questions, my thinking is that whatever means they have of producing gravity aboard ship prevents that. Were Geordi and Ro on a planet they'd be screwed.

Nolan

That feeling of relief when Data shows up on the Romulan ship to help close the door.

Kevin B

I have been helped during times of loss by Worfs thoughts on how the passing of a close friend involves more that just bad things that we feel when it happens, another process might be at work.

Alan Thompson

Hoping you guys like this one, it'd be a real shame if it didn't "phase" you.

THE LORE!!!

One of the better-executed "audience is ahead of the characters" plots. For me the reason why it's pulled off so well here is that if we experience any frustration at the situation, it mirrors Geordi and Ro's frustrations which just makes us relate to their plight instead of getting mad at the writers.

Pokeysaurus

A fun episode with Geordi and Ro exploring what it means to be alone. Ro is still very much isolated and still has difficulty interacting with people -- this episode shows that she really does have friends and that surprisingly (at least to her) Riker is among them. It also shows how she has grown --- how she appreciated Picard's taking a chance on her. The resolution of the episode feels a bit rushed, overall a B for me.

Matthew Ganz

A tier. This is such a great sci fi concept to set up a series a character interactions. Ro continues to fit in seemlessly with the main cast and you'd never know she was new this season. Gotta give the writers credit for still finding new ways to use technology like the transporter and cloaking device that have been around since TOS in new ways.

EnigmaticPenguin

It’s an interesting concept, as long as you can get over the obvious technical questions (How do they not just float through the ship? How do they breathe? etc)

Brian Dunleavy

I want to invite Riker to my funeral too!

Paul Hess

I think this is a good example of conflict done well because Geordi and Ro at first disagree about what's happened to them, But they still both recognize they're stuck in the same boat and it doesn't matter how how or why so much as figuring out what to do next, to get to safety. We've seen Burton really shine in stories where he works one-on-one with someone else, especially a woman? Leaving dating out if it of course,,... I think they both shine here they're acting skills pump each other up. The hand touch moment, Chef Kiss 👌

Loki Incredible

I feel like this one gets kinda maligned but I've been a huge fan since it first aired, it was instantly memorable to me as a teenager and I love it every time I've rewatched it since

Darin Starr

Michelle Forbes elevates every episode she is in and this is no exception.

ShazD

Are Ro and Geordi dead? Everyone but them thinks so. They have good chemistry in this episode that makes me, at least, want more. And once again, no matter how nice you are to them the Romulans can't be trusted. Another episode that I love. “Best of the Best” for me.

KatWithAttitude

Ro and Geordi, a fun pair. Add a dash of Romulans and some phased cloaking and you got yourself an episode.
