I always enjoyed this episode. A/B for me. Definitely not a D or E for me. Maybe not an S, but it’s fun.

This would have been SO much better with Robin Williams and a different director. I could imagine the exact same script working well if: 1. The character came off as compelling and charming, which Robin would have. 2. There being distrustful skepticism looks from character and other things with a better director. Could it benefit from 1 more pass at a rewrite, probably, but I wish we lived in a reality where it was Robin, that would have been amazing.

I guess I have low standards for TNG episodes because I still enjoyed this one 😅 the guy that’s the “fake Jim Carrey” is a pretty good voice actor outside of this. If it *had* been Robin Williams, would the tier have been much higher?

It’s the other way around. The scripted drama of Max Headroom came first, and then the commercials later. His first appearance was in “Max Headroom: 20 Minutes Into the Future”, a made-for-tv cyberpunk film. Then came being a VJ television presenter, then came the drama tv show. The Coke advertisements aired the same year as that show, so he already had a movie and two tv shows by that point. He wasn’t a tv ad turned into a character.

Matt Frewer was lots of fun when he appeared on something, but I don't remember him appearing in a lot of things. He was famously in the movie I Shrunk the Kids in 1989. Matt Frewer became a superstar in 1985 due to playing what was essentially the first computerized character or more specifically "the first computer-generated TV presenter" in Max Headroom. There are lots of articles about Max Headroom, if you want to look him up. I remember Max Headroom from lots of Coke commercials. There was even a Max Headroom television series on ABC for 14 episodes in 1987. I remember one friend said that it was actually an interesting show as it had a rare futuristic dystopian setting, but the idea of a commercial computer pitchman having his own show seemed completely crazy in 1989. I actually seem to remember liking the episode, but I also like actor Matt Frewer.

Jim Carrey was on In Living Color and that was his big role before Ace Ventura. He has extremely memorable characters from In Living Color, but he wasn't well known until Ace Ventura.

Kevin Is Sexy

Amen.

Yeah, who’s this Brannon Braga guy anyway? Not like he’s notable to Star Trek. And who’s this Matt Frewer guy anyway? He’s just some proto Jim Carrey. Ahh, newbies…

You guys clearly don’t have an appreciation for Max Headroom. To think that comedy begins with Jim Carrey, who I really enjoy, of course, but... this reaction… Eh.

Ever hear of the character “Max Headroom” from the 80’s?

A C for me. A lot of the hate for this episode is the Rasmussen character, but for me he rides the line of being annoying/smug enough for the story. He already should have people questioning his motives when he beams aboard and the more we see of him the more we should want to find out what his deal is. He comes close to doing too much for me, but not enough to make me dislike his scene with Picard and the ending with him getting trapped in the future. Part of me thinks even Robin Williams wouldn't have been able to get this episode graded any higher.

I always enjoy this episode, primarily because I like Matt Frewer (including his performance here) and I like the premise of the episode. Looking for D or E episodes? Not here. Go back to season 1!

Sorry, I just got to the part where you mention this information, haha.

The character was originally written for Robin Williams, but he couldn't get away from filming Hook to do it, so it went to this dude, Matt Frewer, who you might know as the guy behind Max Headroom in the 80s and 90s.

Forgettable episode, except for seeing Max Headroom on Star Trek. Not quite an E, but no more than a D+.

Scott Wells

One of the very few episodes of TNG that I'd rate E. For me personally, it didn't add much to the show and I can live without this episode.
