Originally the guest star was supposed to be Robin Williams and the episode was written for him, but he had to cancel because when it came time to shoot, his wife was 8 and a half months pregnant, so instead we got a similar premise with a much weaker guest actor. Would have been interesting to see what Williams would have done with the role. I agree with most here, I think TNG unfortunately is entering into a bit of a slump not having viewed TNG based on season before this, I was a bit surprised as to how relatively weak this next five episode stretch is. The best of these is likely "Hero Worship" but rewatching it not long ago, it didn't hold up as well I remember, though it might be something Josh and Alex enjoy. From there it's strong, except for S5E23 which for me is an absolute E, it has to be because it completely ignores cannon and makes zero sense. Thinking about it, while I'm a fan of TNG, I don't think TNG quite lived up to "Great Television" (though I think Buffy did) despite great characters and being so Influential. Watching a bit of DS9 recently, its clear thats the highwater mark for the franchise and starting probably with "Duet", things that are going to make Alex and Josh's jaw drop.

2025-01-01 23:57:55 +0000 UTCFYI, I have a recommendation for watching Star Trek 6 -- I noticed that in the copy that I have, you have to watch it with subtitles turned on. When seen in the theater, they had subtitles for alien languages so you knew what was being said, and this was important for the plot; as there are scenes with just aliens speaking to each other that audiences were supposed to know what was being said. In the DVD version, turning off regular English subtitles turns off ALL subtitles, including the plot-important alien dialogue. ( I think you already watch with subs turned on so you can talk while watching, but just in case )

Then ST VI, which I love for all my typical highfalutin reasons, most notably a great guest actor who not only tears his scenes apart but clearly has fun doing it. I think the director was afraid to stop him!
