Comments

I believe everyone has their own guilty pleasure episodes. This one is mine and a personal favorite. I would give it an S ranking.

This_Guy_Again

The episode was okay. I remember liking it. But I’d still give it a C. It’s was okay and I didn’t feel like I wasted time watching it but it’s not a banger

Crankygrandma

As noted already, the guest role was written for Robin Williams. One can only imagine how much improv would have replaced the as-written dialog. The dynamic of every crew interaction would have been different. It would've made for a much better episode than what we were presented with. And a Whoopi/Robin scene, where maybe Guinan calls Rasmussen out on his shit, would have been gold.

StealthMomo

I always had the impression they were skeptical, but just kept going along with it waiting for "The professor" to betray himself.

Jovet

More or less ridiculous than "Spock's Brain" ?

Jovet

The future ship could’ve been an egg.

Ron Hubbard Jr

I agree there are worse down the pipe.

Jon1701

I gave Creedence to our time traveler the first time I watch this episode, because of: Assignment: Earth. The premise of the episode was the enterprise went back in time to look at historical events, seems plausible that there are people in the future who want to view what’s happening in the TNG era, Seems as though somebody should be monitoring time excursions

Thicketdweller

Also played the villain molach in the watchmen

Thicketdweller

I didn't know that either. But the question remains: would Williams have appeared on the episode first inside an egg?? [To all you youngins, that's a "Mork and Mindy" reference. Williams played Mork, an alien from another planet whose species hatches from a very large egg as an adult and then regress to resemble a child as they get older.]

Jovet

Stop making sense! 😏

Jovet

I don't like this one but it's not "E" Especially bad. There are worse coming.

Jovet

Just wait until we get to S7! LOL!

Jovet

Not a big fan of this episode. I don't like it, I don't hate it. Firm C. The guest actor just kinda annoys me. He would have made a great badmiral in the 24th century. At least the denouement is kinda fun.

Jovet

I watched this recently, and realized I had no memory of it. Either it's because I actually had never seen it, or because it was so forgettable that it was just erased from my mind. I'm pretty sure I've seen every TNG episode, so I think it's the latter.

Eric Brinkmann

This is another guilty pleasure episode from when I was a kid watching this, but it hasn't aged quite as well as I had hoped. I mean, it's fun, and a neat plot idea. But overall, it's a mediocre filler episode. If not for childhood love, I'd probably rate it a 'C.' That said, it still is a low 'B' even with the nostalgia glasses. Edited to add: I will say the ending is a bit darker than you'd usually see in a TNG episode, in an "oh damn!" kind of way.

Boggle

Complex interesting sci-fi story - nope. Moral facets of the human condition to explore - nope. Somewhat predictable ending - yup. Characters acting out of character - check. Awful terrible episode - nope??? Can't tell you why I like this one - but I just do. It's a B+ for me.

Kyle Stewart

This episode is so blah for me, I’m not even bothering to post a comment. Wait. Oh, maaaaan…

Raphael Gaytan

Written as a guest vehicle for Robin Williams who begged to guest in the series. When he wasn’t available because he was busy making that awful Peter Pan movie, they gave it to Max Headroom. I often wonder if Williams could have saved this bore of an episode. Nothing of any real consequence happens. C for catatonically boring.

Column Meanie

I call this one ridicoulous.

Dan Here

I like this episode. I always have. Matt Frewer always came across with the right hint of smarmy charm that you knew he was a charlatan, but the crew did not have much in the way of contact with his kind (Arda was wasn't smarmy, Q is just blunt, the Ferengi are just obvious, and they never met Harry Mudd) so they had nothing to go on beside his word. And the crew was suspicious of him, they just didn't know what to look for because they couldn't get through his ship's seals. And they had a crisis to deal with. I'm one of the few who's going to give this an S, and I don't begrudge any other grades because I'll admit this episode has faults. Doesn't mean I can't enjoy the heck out of it.

wildhunt1973

This was great on my first watch, but loses its charm on rewatch. This is on my skip list.

John Pierce

I gave this a C for one good reason. The way that Picard accepts this man as trustworthy just because he says he is a historian from the future is not very Picard like to me. The man gets unrestricted access to the bridge, engineering, and probably other sensitive areas of the ship. He should have been arrested the moment he beamed himself onto the bridge and questioned. Forced to surrender access to his ship for inspection. And when the truth is discovered, set it's return date to the ship's future origin time with Rasmussen held in restraints and a padd containing a debrief on all his shenanigans. Let the future authorities deal with this imposter.

Sherpa Jones

Looks like I like it more tha most here. A for A guilty pleasure it is then

Narnman

its looking that way

Narnman

Maybe I’m easy to please, but this one was a great episode for its premise and execution. The vague explanations that hint towards Rasmussen being a sham are great and the twist of WHEN he’s really from is fun. Picards speech towards the end is so passionate that I can’t give this any lower than an A, even if repeat watches make the twist more apparent.

cricketlenny

The last episode before Star Trek VI. So get behind it quickly.

Sam Langanke

Not the fault of the actor, but the guest star is really irritating. In general this episode feels like it belongs in Season 2 or 3.

Tim b

That scene where he tries to flirt with Beverly. Jesus. No one's calling him "Rizz"mussen, I'll tell you that.

Ally Roth

I agree with you but watched it just last year so e for me lol

Ramen Nudels

It’s OK. One of my favorite FX sequences when they save the planet. The cast chemistry is so good at this point it’s not too boring. That looong ready room scene is a bit much tho.

rear adm. crackbiscuit

Star Wars Parody. Bill shows Cricket his favorite movie Constellation Battles! If only Bill could stop spoiling the movie… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFSPV87lS3I

thebeefmaster

So, half the patreons then? 🙃

Nolan

He also turned in a surprisingly subdued performance as Ted in the excellent Canadian spy thriller “Intelligence”

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

Rasmussen reminds me of one of people that has either seen episode of a show you’re watching, or read the book it’s based on, and can’t stop themselves from dropping hints about what’s to come.

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

And that was another episode. C.

Collin Freeman

The greedy time travelling con man episode. I enjoy this one and give it a solid B rating.

barry vanwieringen

Also Taggert in Eureka and Trashcan man in Stephen King's The Stand.

barry vanwieringen

In addition to playing Max Headroom, Matt Frewer was also in Honey I Shrunk the Kids, the 1984 “Supergirl” film, and played the villain in the first live-action X-Men adaptation… 1996’s “Generation X,” which was a Fox TV movie of the week.

Matt Everkoul

well it was a Matter of Time before yall watched a Matter of Time (bad pun there sorry) what i can i say bout this, Time travel episode not the first time we have see it happen either. So Rasmussen is a con man (kinda like Harry Mudd i wonder if they are related). When the crew badgers him for advice or knowledge he says he cant tell them not because hes bound by any law but simply he cant. Personally i hate Time travel, The Future is the past, The past is the future. it gives me a headache. but yeah solid A episode i think

GamingHour2018

I really wish they'd gotten Robin Williams for it. Even Jim Carrey would have been more entertaining than Frewer. I think Frewer CAN be great, but this is just the most boring role.

Ian Westcott

Fun fact. The scene with Data listening to multiple overlapping tracks served as inspiration for what would become QuickTime and then ultimately the mp3 players/iPod. Source: https://youtu.be/b4znPAM1f6g?si=vnP6Y-_UinQA0Ad1&t=3598

beanKounter

This episode is one I've skipped in my TNG binging. Not a terrible episode, nor forgettable... it's just ok.

THE Fans

Max Headroom visits the Enterprise! The idea of the future historian was kind lame, but the twist that he was just a con man helps save it.

tyranusfan

This had a lot of potential. It ended up being good, but it was a bit of a clumsy ride to the B category.

Frank Tagader

One of only two Star Trek episodes that Rick Berman had the sole writing credit on. The other was "Brothers".

Steven Linden

C. One of those episodes that evaporates as you’re watching it.

John M.

Would've been a really fun way to bring back Harry Mudd, except that the audience (well, anybody who watched TOS) would know right away that it's a con.

Steven Linden

C. Good premise, passing grade, but not much rewatch value knowing the ending. Skip.

The Ninth Doctor

I think the premise might be stronger than the execution here, as the idea of this is really fascinating, especially from our character perspective, and the few scenes with Picard trying to figure out what to do, but could have been executed better. Matt Frewer is solid as the guest, and pulls off the right level of smarmy for who he is supposed to be.

Thomas Cole

You mean Taggart from "Eureka"?

Thomas Cole

Rasmussen was originally supposed to be played by Robin Williams, who was a big Star Trek fan and had wanted to do a show. Unfortunately between his wife's pregnancy and his other filming commitments, he ended up having to back out. As it stands Frewer's performance reminds me more of Jim Carrey than Robin Williams.

Timothy Nikiforovs

A tier, fun story good guest actor.

harrypothead42024

I assume people find this episode maybe obnoxious? But I like it, it’s fun with the show. And the fact that the twist is also so fun?! Hope it is a B or C for you guys and not lesser !

Sixto

Did he actually steal the time machine from his neighbor Rick Moranis, the kid-shrinking scientific genius? I like Matt Frewer; to me he did a fine job. But the episode is held together by a very thin thread, story-wise.

Banes

It's fine. It wasn't at all possible as the actor had died 5 years earlier, but what if this con-man from the past was Harry Mudd? Or is that too many TOS callbacks in a row?

Nolan

Max Headroom learns not to mess with the future. A very brief callback to “Space Seed” and “Wrath of Khan”. And...that's about it for me. Not one I particularly enjoy. I have it ranked as “Time Filler With Good Moments”.

KatWithAttitude

The guest character annoys me. Erase. Edit: I’ll upgrade this to D because there are more offensive episodes. I’ll reserve the sacred E for those.

Shanelle

Was going to do B but it’s never an episode I want to go back and watch so C for me.

JP RFL

Some good Picard moments, but I'm not the biggest fan of the guest Star and the plot.

Andreas Schmitt

Refreshing to see the responsibility to maintain the timeline from the other perspective. Picard argues that it's totally ok for them to rewrite history as it ought to play out, but I don't think he's even convincing himself, I just think he likes to argue. If it had been Q to arrive and offer to snap his fingers to fix a problem you know Picard would refuse on principle alone.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Famously originally written for Robin Williams, who was a huge Trek fan, would have been S+++ if he had started.

ByRikersBeard

"C" for "could be worse"

Eric Singer

D for Dogshit. Hate this episode. I don’t know why Picard goes along with his bullshit from the start. Why would you believe him? How can you check futuristic credentials? Horrific guest performance and terrible writing. Makes no sense whatsoever. I won’t go E because I haven’t watched this episode in over 30 years and I’m sure there are some redeeming qualities in there. Looking forward to the reaction 😂

Jon1701

The scene between Rasmussen and Picard is a great one and saves the episode for me. There is some great dialogue but then Picard and speeches go hand in hand. Rasmussen borders on annoying at times but the episode is fine.

Darren Seal

This episode is 1 of 2 episodes this season to win the Emmy for Individual Achievement in Special Visual Effects in 1992

Elway Simpson

I can't stand this episode. Mostly because the baddy chews up the scenery, very loudly.

Christopher Boutwell

Judging by the other comments, it looks like I may be in the minority on liking Matt Frewer's performance. Is Rasmussen going to be the next Dr. Stubbs for them? Or will this be a reverse-Stubbs where they like him but the fans didn't?

Forbidden Donut

This episode is a total dud for me. I like this guest star less than you liked Stubbs

Jeffrey

Wow, I didn't know that. That would have been something to see. I actually like Matt Frewer in the episode, but presumably Williams would have knocked it out of the park.

Forbidden Donut

About the only positive I have is the guest star. Originally saw him in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids so seeing him here was pretty funny.

Deep Red

While the twist does pull the rug out from under the initial premise, I still really like this one. On first watch, I was intrigued by the concept of the 'man from the future' coming back to witness a historical moment as basically a fan of the crew, and I think the performance by guest actor Matt Frewer makes it a fun rewatch even after the twist is known.

Forbidden Donut

Even as a kid I never understood why he stole things from the Enterprise, the crew believed he was from the future, why didn't he just ask for some equipment? Maybe not a weapon but I doubt Picard would have said Rasmussen cannot have a tricorder as a souvenir. Or even easier, why not download a bunch of public information from the Enterprise computer? That would have been incredibly valuable too, giving him lots of future knowledge and opportunities to get rich and powerful.

Phillip Grischa

This is mostly just a forgettable episode with an annoying guest star. But what really elevates it for me is the ready room scene where Picard asks Rasmussen for help. Some great dialogue and Stewart performance there. What did you guys think of Rasmussen? Worse than Stubbs?

Ryan Caulfield

This episode is A-tier for me. It's entertaining, a little twist to the usual "Planet B has problem A, we will try to solve it with solution C." This time, there's an audience. And a time-traveler from the future provides them with some interesting possibilities. The whole non-interference thing is interesting, and the conclusion is vaguely satisfying. Like I say, I like this episode, and it's a good way to relax after the prior episodes, but I don't think it's gonna be the greatest episode of all time. I think after the two-parter, I don't see you guys giving this one an S.

John

You mean New Jersey?

John

C for me Matt Frewer didn't fit too well in this episode for me. He sounded too much like Max Headroom.

Keith S

I usually skip over this one when re-watching the season. Max Headroom had fallen far at this point.

Darin Wagner

I know a lot of people didn't like this one, but I enjoyed the slight mystery with the minor twist at the end. Maybe not an s but an A for me. I enjoy it quite a bit in the rewatch each time.

Eric Wilson

gotta say the interior design in the 26th century sucks badly, perhaps they were traveling through time to get help

Dark Kronis

I really hated that this episode was the last before the release of Star Trek VI instead of “Unification Pt. 2”, which would’ve been perfect. If they had put it before the Unification two-parter, then that would’ve taken us into the holiday break, which was usually five or six weeks, instead of this meh episode.

Ron Hubbard Jr

This episode was a real disappointment after the epic guest star. Was just a filler between eps 7 & 8 and ST6

Miah1138

Would this have been better with Robin Williams? Damn that Spielberg for keeping him on Hook at the time

Gregory

As I remember it, the producers originally wanted Robin Williams for the part of Rasmussen but couldn’t get it worked out so went with Matt Frewer instead.

Ron Hubbard Jr

It's a fun rewatchable temporal prime directive episode for me. I like the twist at the end that he is from the past. Also another example of the meme where Worf, thinking always about weapons to blow something up, just to get turned down again or in this case insulted;-). Never gets old. I am the S vote by the way. Because of rewatchability and a fun time things I always look for in my S'es.

Sebastian_Frodo

I always love the way he says “New Jersey”. Makes it sound like he’s about to drag Data into the depths of hell.

Evan Guthrie

All the characters here are WAAAYYYYY too gullible. And Picard is so damn casual about giving him the run of the ship and not caring about changing the timeline, I originally thought he was going to reveal he was humoring the time traveler for some secret reason. And also, they seem to be suggesting Crusher finds him charming? To me, this script feels like it was written by someone who doesn't know the characters very well. I've found Matt Frewer entertaining in some things, but for some reason he or the director has Rasmussen seeming untrustworthy from the beginning.

Joe Concepts

This one is the definition of don’t care

Phil Ken Sebben

Not a huge fan of this one, it always felt like it kind of fell through, though i do enjoy Max Headroom

Connor Fallon

Here is a middling episode to end the year. Star Trek VI premieres directly between two pretty bland episodes.

Joe Concepts

As someone originally from New Jersey, we don't claim him.

THE LORE!!!

He's the neighbor from Honey I Shrunk the Kids for me.

Steven Linden

Matt Frewer channeling his inner fanboy for this character.

Chris Mickelson

I fucking hate this episode so much solely because of the guest star. Genuinely one of most bad, unfunny, cringy performances that makes it tied with code of honor for my personal series worst, E!

Ramen Nudels

To me this is the definition of a low B tier episode. Wouldn't hold it against anyone for putting it lower.

Spencer Loften

I absolutely adored this one when I watched it in first run and my feelings haven't changed. Underrated imo

Darin Starr

ZZZzzzzZZZZZzzzzz Bring on ST6! D

Phil Ken Sebben

he will always be "The Trashcan Man" to me from "The Stand"

Prof Moff

2.3 meters. I believe that's the max headroom in Rasmussen's time machine

Moonlander

A lot of fun, with a great comedic guest actor who was the original Max Headroom. Look it up!

Paul Hess
