I would love to see you guys dive into the universe of Stargate! It's a long series with lots of spinoffs. Lots of potential, but I also want to see you guys continue your Trek. In the end, you do you. I'll be here.

Gryff

Thank you for letting us know you’re interested in more!

Josh (Target Audience)

Star Trek and Stargate are my shows. They're my childhood. My heroes growing up were Tasha Yar and Sam Carter (the blonde woman on the team in this episode). I enjoy the Stargate movie (and James Spader is one of my favorite actors ever) but Richard Dean Anderson's "Jack O'Neill" is one of the best sci-fi leads ever written. He has heart and humor and vulnerability...Richard Dean Anderson just did an incredible job with the role. And Michael Shanks really did his job as Daniel, too. It's a great cast. And the premise is so good. Every episode, they go through that gate to new planets, new civilizations, new enemies, new environments, new technologies, new phenomena and it's so exciting to watch the world they build. And, as someone who has always been a big fan of mythology, I think it was so clever and interesting to make the Norse and Egyptian pantheons aliens. So we get to see the alien origins of these myths. Anyway, all this is to say that I hope you'll react to more Stargate. It truly is such a rewarding sci-fi show to get into. It's a good mix of action, intellect, and humor with a cast of icons and wonderful, creative stories. Thanks for checking this out!

19m43 of your reaction in, yeah, back in the 90s there was a much harder line between TV and movies. A standard A- or B-list movie actor would probably have fired their agent if they approached them about a TV role. Really appreciate these days almost everybody's on board with decent TV being just as prestigious as film.

SageGreenGoat

Man U people are awful here huh

Steve the greeeen hand

To me the greatest

Steve the greeeen hand

The absolute best

Steve the greeeen hand

The absolute best sci for show ever imo

Steve the greeeen hand

Hmm interesting, maybe it's because I saw Stargate first, but I enjoy the first two seasons more than tng.

Paul

- People say TNG is borderline unwatchable until s3, and they are WRONG - People say SG-1 is borderline unwatchable until s3, and they are RIGHT Honestly, I don't think Josh and Alex would enjoy watching through Stargate. There's simply too much trash, too frequent, too early. Endless C's and D's interrupted by a rando 'A' like this episode hitting hard outta nowhere, then right back to the bottom for those first two seasons. Don't get me wrong, the highs of SG are meteoric and are absolutely worth the cost of entry, but boy is it something that has to be earned. Especially if you have to do it fresh, 30 years later, from the beginning, one episode at a time. There is a reason SG had 10 seasons, multiple movies, two spinoff series (one successful). But little of that came on the back of the early seasons.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

I love this episode but I think it holds more meaning for people who have watched more of the show than Alex and Josh. For Alex and Josh, with what they like most out of TNG, I feel 1x16 Cor-ai would be a better episode to watch. It fills in things that make for a good starting episode, but also it is very much the sort of personal episode that they really love from TNG.

Angarl

Well I was going to comment more, but after reading the comments, many ramble on and on well into the realm of spoilers. The bottom line: I love Star Trek and love Star Gate. Neither of you would be unhappy watching this show. It didn’t run for 10 seasons being garbage. I’m glad you guys like it, but it’s really just an average episode, to be honest. Stick with Star Trek, but as I had suggested a while back, this would be an amazing series to following up with. I love them both and go back and forth. I could go on and on, but so many people have already said far too much, so I will just say that I really look forward to you enjoying this series as much as I have. ☺️❤️

KingPin124

@Target Audience So, you two were the men that were trapped! Got it. 😆

Jovet

I don't hate it, I don't love it. Overall I think it has too many tropes and clichés which wreck my suspension of disbelief. Some of the lore is interesting, and some other parts of the lore are just silly. Overall its writing isn't as imaginative as it should/could have been.

Jovet

I really liked the movie & wanted to watch the show, but it started on Showtime which as a teen I had no access to. About a year & half later it started running in Syndication & by that time I lost interest. In my local area it would air right after WWF Shotgun Saturday Night & I would just turn off the tv & not watch. One week I went to watch Shotgun & SG-1 was on. I figured may there was a delay or something so I left it on in the background waiting for Shotgun to start, but it didn't start till the top of the hour. Same thing the next 2 weeks & I realized then the 2 shows switched time slots. I had picked up a few minor things by just hearing it in the background & the 3rd week was when this episode aired in syndication. It grabbed my attention & instead of just having it run in the background I was actively watching & became heavily interested. From that moment on I started my dive into Stargate fandom thanks to wrestling & since I had no cable TV, that late night Saturday was always exciting for me with WWE (F at the time) & Stargate.

Retro Tom

I thought the film was excellent. One reason it was so good was it was all plausible, with some imagination.

Jovet

51:48 Captain Carter is a scientist too, but she's also full military.

Jovet

18:14 Yes, Richard Dean Anderson is playing Kurt Russel's role.

Jovet

SG1 is a solid choice to watch down the road. It has that semi serialized but still episodic structure a lot of people like about DS9, and 20-22 episodes a season is a nice balance between the 9-13 episode seasons today and the 26 ep seasons of older trek that could wind up with too much filler at times. I guess people chose this episode because it's easy to relate to the movie AND because it's the first episode to really open the door to SG1's wider lore. A good bridge episode. Were it not for the 1 episode limit, the 2 part pilot plus the follow up episode are a really solid introduction to the series. The first season struggles much like TNG S1, at first. I would argue however that the first 8-9 eps are akin to TNG S1, and the back half is like S2, while the last few eps of S1 are approaching TNG S3 quality. SG1 got on it's feet pretty quickly. S2 was a noticeable step up, and by S3 the actors were all dialed into their characters and the storylines were getting better and better. S3-7 is prime SG1. There's a 2 parter in S7 called heroes that without saying too much is 2 of the finest hours of television I've ever seen, and I don't see either of you giving it less than an A, and more likely an S. I got into SG1 in it's 4th season, dropping in halfway through a particularly crazy episode and having no clue what was happening, just recognizing the gate and staffs from the movie. It was a big part of my teenage years as Trek was on the decline in the 2000s. While a lot of shows like BSG were at the time trending toward more depressing and morally grey storytelling, SG1 embodied a lot of the ideals of 90s trek into the 2000s. It was also a cool concept to have it set in our (then) modern world while all these encounters with aliens and traveling to other worlds was happening behind the scenes. Like trek it's aspirational sci fi that uses the technologies and alien cultures in the show as a canvas to explore the human condition. Also with a smaller cast(4 main team members and the head honcho back at base), there's no shortage of character development for anyone, so it's rare to be left wishing they would do more with this character or that character. Worth watching at some point, but I get your plate is full right now.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Nah the directors cut is OK to check out afterward but if you're new to SG1 it's best to watch the original. They cut a bunch of stuff and used worse alternate takes of several scenes. There were some decent changes like the pacing of the breakout scene, but they also had Chris Judge redub his lines over a decade later when his voice had changed significantly. There's 3-5 changes in the directors cut I'd take and incorporate into the finished product, but the rest is just unnecessary meddling IMO.

Timothy Nikiforovs

For my money, Man Trap is very mediocre, but there is genuinely good stuff to see in TOS. It does really show it's age though

Timothy Nikiforovs

Never really cared for this show.

Owen Madden

“No, the bridge is too well-guarded.”

Will Sofer

And all of them substantially advance the overarching plot. Clip shows. That’s kind of awesome.

Will Sofer

Agree as Season 1 is pretty rough, watching another channel go though it right now. But almost feel like they would miss out on some of the plot and characters going out to even just season 2

Colby Scovil-Turton

While amazing episode, you really need to know a bit about the characters to enjoy Window of Opportunity to the fullest extent

Colby Scovil-Turton

I wasn't a fan of Universe and the direction at first, but the 2nd season started to grow on me and kinda wish they didn't cancel it.

Colby Scovil-Turton

We'll cross that bridge when we come to it

Colby Scovil-Turton

Odd, my old box set actually has this labelled as Episode 9, with the pilot not being split. But damn is the episode order out of wack.

Colby Scovil-Turton

I kinda wish we got to see them watch episode 200 with no context....

Colby Scovil-Turton

Had to go dust off the old computer for a DVD drive but glad to finally get to do a full watch along (is that what their called) with you guys. Guess I'm just lucky it's probably my favorite series and local.

Colby Scovil-Turton

HEZMANA!!!

Timothy Nikiforovs

Episode 200 is one of my favorites!

The Travelers Travels

Awesome I have yall a little something for a new studio warming gift! just waiting for a PO box..

The Travelers Travels

I Loved the reaction guys! Maybe not the best episode to get you hooked, but at least a good one.. I'm not trying to spam, but tis is the comment I left on the YT video, and not sure how much you check those, so here it is... . I'm so glad you guys didn't hate this! One of the main reasons I love Stargate is how they intertwine our own history/mythology into the storyline with the different characters, which makes a lot of it actually seem plausible. It's such an excellent series that gets better, and better as the seasons go on and we get more knowledge, allies, and technology. IMHO (also bigger budgets) Things definitely make more sense when watching in order because they do have long through-plots along with great one off episodes. 🙏PLEASE Watch all of SG-1 at some point! (you can thank me later) 😃

The Travelers Travels

Supreme badass.

Marko

I can think of a certain badass who raises his finger at a certain key moment in a briefing room. ;)

Paul

Oh, right, I forgot that was a 2 parter, amazon has smushed it together into one, my bad.

FPG

The only show I can think of which has excellent clip show episodes

Vina

I'm curious how far into the show you get when you try to watch it. Or is it random episodes?

Vina

Children of the Gods is considered ep 1 and ep 2, putting this at 11

Vina

Your titles wrong chaps, it's Ep10, not Ep11, 11 is bloodlines :)

FPG

One will be open again in January

Josh (Target Audience)

Do Alex and Josh have a PO box? And would Alex appreciate a custom RLM themed Christmas with Dennis dvd?

Mr Moxie

TOS is definitely worth checking out. I actually made a "shorter watch" list for the series for people turned off the idea of such an older series and or Star Trek. I designed the list to give the most emotional weight for Star Trek II.

Ricky

There are tons of shows after it, X-files, Supernatural, The Expanse, Stargate, Babylon. They're set for the next decade lol

Paul

Gotcha, and they liked it that much? It's not rated particularly highly on IMDB. Maybe I'll watch their reactions to it since I can't seem to just watch the original on its own.

Paul

No, Babylon 5! 😜 Plus, it's only five seasons. Basically, it's their whole TNG experience up to this point.

Ricky

I'd guess an average kligon is twice as strong as an average human, that's as far as I'd go, whereas Vulcans are 3-4 times stronger. Meanwhile, Data is laughing with his x10 strength level.

Paul

They watch everything in release order and 'The Man Trap' aired first.

Ricky

I never saw the original series (the only Star Trek I haven't seen), on IMDB it says the first episode is "The Cage", did the boys watch Man Trap first, instead of the cage?

Paul

For sure! The storylines in SG-1 are great, sometimes spectacular, but much like Star Trek, it's all about connecting to the characters experiencing the events and dealing with what's happening, overcoming challenges, seeing their struggles, etc... The hardest part of a show is making you like and care about the characters. I think SG-1 does that really well, but anyways, you'll find out one day.

Paul

True.

valen

Your sense of the overall tone of the show is pretty accurate. It's largely episodic, with a serialized through-line that comes up every so often. The basic formula for a typical episode is essentially how Josh has described his favorite type of TOS episode: show up at a new planet, meet the civilization there, and get caught up in whatever drama they have going on.

Jeff Cornell

This show sucks I get bored every time I try to watch it.

AzoriusMage

It was a good choice - it didn't need to stand on too much continuity and pulled some threads they say in the movie. I typically recommend Window of Opportunity, because I think it helps motivate people to get over some of that first season roughness.

xadg

If you like Star Trek I don't think you would regret watching SG-1. Star Trek (all of it) is the best show/story/lore that I came across in my life. And sci-fi wise SG-1 comes right after that. Because, unlike Star Trek, Stargate depicts ancient astronaut theme that was always interesting to me. The whole ancient astronaut spiel got overused and meme-like in the last 10 years, but it wasn't so in the 90's and early 2000's. Also regarding what you said about Jack O'Neill and Samantha Carter being only soldiers and not scientist, that is true in Jack's case. Carter is even more of a nerd than Daniel (while also being a soldier). Daniel was more of a scholar in terms of history, archaeology, anthropology, cultural references. Carter is a genius when it comes to math and physics, as she is an astrophysicist in the Air force. She is a Data, or Spock like character on the show. Anyways, I wholeheartedly recommend it given how you are able to appreciate Star Trek for what it truly is. This might be a campy and corny comparison, but if Star Trek was MJ, Stargate would be Lebron or Kobe, for me at least.

Marko

Funny enough it was the opposite for me. I loved Stargate but thought for a while that Star Trek would be too nerdy. I was not correct.

xadg

I think this is a decent episode but there really aren't many that you could use as a jumping-in point with no prior knowledge. Alex is right that Teal'c is pretty similar to Kratos (new Kratos not the old one). Hearing the SG-1 theme play always puts me in a good mood, it was the first sci-fi show I ever got into. And yes the show is very "portal of the week" episodic in the early seasons.

Doug

For some reason after years of sifting through canon I thought Klingons were on pair or a bit stronger than Vulcans (who themselves were 2-3 times stronger than a human). Like just bellow Augments who were 5 times as strong as a human. But I might be wrong.

Marko

The guy that plays Jack O'Neal.

Eric Wilson

;)

Paul

They have some similarities to Star Trek but it's 100% its own thing.

Paul

:O

Paul

I'd have to give it to Teal'c too. It's not 100% clear how strong Klingons are physically, compared to a human. A bit stronger perhaps, but nothing like Vulcans who are several times stronger.

Paul

Just to add a bit more on Kratos/Teal'c - if both Teal'c and Worf were to engage in hand to hand combat, I am not sure who would win. In all honesty it might be Teal'c.

Marko

And yes you should definitely watch the first 2 part episode. This isnt like Star Trek for me, but this is a REALLY good show. Behind star trek it is probably the best scifi universe built. Girlfriend question is also answered in that first episode. As well as explaining why he is there. What the deal is with the Guold etc.

Eric Wilson

FYI the backup plan is eventually headquarters calls through the gate to check in, and they can send a human tech to power the gate and they can manually spin the ring, but the problem is they likely arent scheduled to check in for a while because they assumed everything was working and the storm might destroy the castle.

Eric Wilson

If you thought Kratos was cool, you would learn Teal'c was legendary :)

Marko

WHO?

Josh (Target Audience)

Guys,...Its MacGyver, you caught that right?

Eric Wilson

Yeah I’d say this is a best case scenario result tbh

Josh (Target Audience)

Watching random episodes in a serialized series like this is the equivilant of channel surfing in the 90's and seeing a random episode of a show you've never watched. No one can reasonably be upset if it doesn't hook you with so little context.

EnigmaticPenguin

That's for sure! And for the best! 😆

Ricky

It’s an event that changed both of our lives forever lol

Josh (Target Audience)

The Stargate TV Universe is fantastic. For many years I refused to watch it because I considered it poor man’s Star Trek. After I found myself out of work in 2008, I decided to check it out on Netflix just to see why it had run so long and had TWO spinoff shows at that point. I was very very wrong. This series and its spinoffs are the greatest sci-fi show you’ve NEVER heard of. Smart writing. Great acting. Surprisingly good to great effects. Dunno if you guys will ever watch more of them, but I really think you’d like them.

DestinyCaptain

Let's face it. The Horror & Mystery guys will never become ScFi fans. But they became Trek fans. Good enough for me.

Sam Langanke

Your regular comparisons to and fondness of 'The Man Trap' I think deserves a research paper lol

Ricky

10 seasons and two spin offs it’s obviously a good show and we’d love to see reactions but not at the expense of your Star Trek content.

Kurt Linke

Stargate SG-1 is a fantastic show, and if you enjoyed this episode as a basic banger tier, I think you'd definitely like where it all leads. As you say, episodic yes, but there's definitely a "main plotline" throughout too. Probably nothing soon, but perhaps after you've finished all of Star Trek years from now, the Stargate Franchise is a natural pivot!

Paul

I would say that the elements that worked for you in this episode suggest you will enjoy SG-1 overall. Probably Atlantis as well. I will be here for it if you ever decide to start a full watch through, but I dont see a way to do so with your watching rate until after you finish DS9 and are back to only dealing with one Star Trek at a time.

Julie Carter

i think yall should really watch the first episode, someone in the comments mentioned there was a directors cut for it that is true it takes parts one and two and turns it into a full length movie. a lot of streaming sites use that as the first episode which kinda throws off the episode numbering list lol. a lot of questions will be answered in the first two and if yall do watch it just know you guys will be in for a heck of a ride, this is series is one of my Favorites next to star trek. and Alex you mentioned something about spin offs, yes there are two spin off series Star Gate Atlantis and Star Gate universe (which was filmed differently had a darker tone and wasnt well received by fans, however i rather enjoyed it).

GamingHour2018

Also my ACTUAL recommendation with every show is to just start with the first episode (or the movie in this case) but that wouldn't fit in the rules of the recommendation.

Kenneth Elder

Still suprised my pick ended up winning. I will be watching this on my lunch break today. Whether you love it, hate it, or are neutral its always I way I am greatful, its great to see people like yourself go out on a limb and try stuff.

Kenneth Elder

I am a big fan of many sci-fi TV series and Stargate SG-1 is my favorite and this episode is a really good episode in the first season but just like Star Trek TNG it takes a bit to get it footing and really get good and it does have 2 spin off, Stargate Atlantis is great but Stargate Universe is not so good but there is a lot of lore in this franchise utilizing a lot of Earth mythology in the show and the episodes are quite a bit like Star Trek just utilizing the gate instead of a starship and how humans could possibly effect aliens using our current level of technology and trying to find more technology to advance ourselves by going through the gate to see what they can find and it is just as episodic as Star Trek but with a string of serialized plots stringing throughout the series and I would definitely love it and be here with you throughout your journey if you do decide to watch this franchise also but understand if that doesn't happen. That being said, great reaction to a good episode of Stargat SG-1 and I look forward to more Star trek and possibly more in the future.

Eric Traylor

Good reaction. The thing about the Stargate lore, it covers such a wide range of elements; action of course, drama, mythology, scientific theory and some good comedic moments, but you have to be willing to get invested and be in for the long haul. If you continue it at some point, I'm with you guys and if you never do again, well it is what it is. Much thanks and appreciation for what you do. 🖖

Dru Blood

Welcome to SG-1, we have MacGyver, Worf, the better Captain Carter and Nerd.

TomEmilioDavies

A lot of your questions were answered in the pilot "children of the gods". (Which is essentially the second movie, there is even a directors cut of it out there).

BGB_CA

Indeed

Yannik M.

Weird that The Torment of Tantalus is the one that was chosen. I wouldn't have picked this as my recommendation, since it was so early in the run and first season was not (imo) as good as future seasons. (Kind of like TNG's first season took a bit to get its footing.) But any Stargate is a welcome addition since I love the show so much. :-) Hope you get a chance to get further in down the line.
