Before they started on the full-length episodes, they did three short vignettes. The first one was, much like this, a direct continuation of Turnabout Intruder.

My first time watching STC. It was well done & enjoyable. But for me personally, I can't see anyone but the original actors playing these characters. No matter how good they are, it doesn't feel the same. If only we could have had several more seasons of the original!

Well, I have never watched this either. Looked at the cast list, there are a TON of sci-fi people and the like including the late Grant Imahara, who I had met a few years ago, as Sulu. About lost it when I saw that. So cool. Marina Sirts is the usual computer voice when in the prime universe, and the Halkan leader was former Dr. Who Colin Baker. This was a serious labor of love. Gonna take in the rest of it.

I'm not one of those people who treats Continues like it's canon or on the same level as TOS. There is a lot of love in the production though. Performances can be hit or miss, but the sets/props/effects are about as faithful as you can get, and the writing is pretty solid. I'd certainly take the stories in STC as the 4th and 5th years of the TOS crew over TAS.
As long as you take Continues for what it is, a faithful tribute to the original by loving fans, it's really quite good. It does tie up a lot of loose ends and tells some original stories as well. The finale makes a nice bridge between TOS and TMP as well.

I became a fan of Star Trek watching re-runs of the original as a kid. This series is one of the few fan fic efforts that I thought was good enough for the public to enjoy. Axanar and I believe there was one called Renegades that was in production when CBS got pissy that were alright as well.

I'm honestly pretty surprised to see several negative reactions to ST Continues in some of the comments! There are certainly some things I don't like about ST Continues - primarily I think that the acting doesn't quite hit the right notes for the original characters at times - but overall ST Continues is so well done and gets so much essentially **perfect** that since I first saw it I've considered it virtually canonical.
The lighting, the blocking, WHEN they do certain lighting, WHEN they do certain blocking, the music and when and how they use it, the colors, the structure of the episodes, the particular ways they create tension, the story structures, the ways they resolve the plots in most of the episodes, the props and set design and so many other things.... it all so perfectly recreates the original series that the new actors are to my eye and ear the only thing that gives away that these aren't original. Put differently, if I had been stranded on a desert island in 1969 and when I was rescued someone had told me they just recast everyone and continued filming the series I'd have believed them.

It's the only one that actually goes through the effort of faithfully re-creating the show with custumes, sets, camera angles, professionally shot scenes, good writing, actual actors and a professional production.
As much as people praise other fan made stuff, those all look like being filmed on VHS in someone's basement.
ST Continues is the only really good one that looks and feels like a TV production

I'm so glad the two of you liked this. I too was super skeptical because this is not the only similar original series fan made production out there there are at least two others and this is seriously top shelf in my opinion. Most of the eps are not sequels or continuations but they remain pretty damn well written. Plus there's no denying the quality and passion that's put into the lighting direction acting trying to make it as authentic and experience as possible. And I truly believe that once you get past 2005 Star Trek reactions and start watching anything after that the two of you will be clawing to get back to Star Trek Continues. π

It's worth it. They are careful to connect the TOS storyline from the end of the series to the first movie. The 2 part series finale is truly incredible, but to fully appreciate it, you should watch the rest of the episodes first. It makes it more impactful.

A few notes. If you guys do watch more of this, be careful, there are spoilers, in the sense that information that isnt revealed till later in the franchise affects things here as they are aware of future canon.
Alll in all you're right, the writing is very good. They really made an effort as you may have read to do lighting, blocking, and other things that were done back then instead of modern styles to make it feel like Trek.
The thing is, the actor who plays Kirk, who also does a lot of the writing, does a good job, but does a better job at "angry" kirk then regular Kirk.
It's the kind of thing where I can watch a few and enjoy it but its not quite bingeable.
Not a complaint, but they also bring in a modern sensibility in some episodes, as in its more in tune with sort of modern ethics then perhaps what it was in the 60s, which I'm ok with. All in all its definitely the best fan production of trek I've seen.

I remember watching this episode once or twice when it came out, but I couldn't remember how it ended. I think it is probably the best episode of this series. A few years ago while thinking about the original series, I thought that "Mirror, Mirror" would have been the best story to stretch out into a two-part episode just because it was really cool but also because the regular actors played the bad guys -- no need to pay a lot of guest stars and create a lot of new sets. I didn't have any craving for the mirror happenings, but it was certainly interesting. The writer of the episode did a pretty good job.

Oh my God! I am so happy you guys enjoyed it! Star Trek Continues is actually really good and well made, true to the original series as much as one can. The performances, lighting, sets, score, effects and sound effects, especially writing of most part, and also true to the whole look like was made in then 60's. PLEASE, lol please continue to watch the rest, you won't be dissatisfied. Like one of you said, you about forgot you were watching a fan fiction because they do a good job of TOS. That could be part of it, but some of the music sounds pitchy as well. I just wondered because I have downloaded several series recently from (ahem) less than reputable sources, and on one series, some of the videos were DEFINITELY varispeeded fast. I had to play it back in VLC at .8 speed for it to sound "normal."

I like the way that they structured their episodes with dramatic builds that end in a commercial break⦠Even though they have no commercials. For nor are they permitted to have commercials by Paramount.
That is a structural decision that shows faithfulness to the source material, even when they were free to use a more movie-like structure.

The lighting and cinematography were by Matt Bucy, a true genius in recapturing that Sixties Star Trek look.
Head of wardrobe Ginger Holley is also incredible at her craft. To make the Mirror Kirk uniform she tracked down perhaps the last bolt of that sparkly fabric in existence, and to reproduce the Season 2 uniforms she got hold of some old velour cloth and dyed it in the various colors.

I'm glad you enjoyed this. I don't love all the episodes of this fan series equally but I really feel like this one and the final two-part episode in particular really honor the original work. So you did. And now you can't unwatch it ;)
Seriously... I may or may not watch this reaction (update: I'm watching it); it's been too long since I watched ST CONTINUES for me to say anything other than I tend to avoid fan productions for so many reasons, many of which are visible in abundance here.
However, seeing episodes of this "eased me into" the idea of other actors playing these roles in the canonical productions, and it would have been impossible for me to enjoy the JJ films, Discovery, and Strange New Worlds without accepting that actors other than Nimoy-Shatner &c could play these parts.
And they got a great "live experience" out of it (Ticonderoga NY).
