Somehow, Buffy returned.

Comments

I think their reaction was fair enough. It’s like this for me: say I don’t like the sport football. Even if I watch the best, most exciting football game that ever existed, at the end of the day, I still don’t like football, and that’s okay.

Anthony Picard

Thanks for the reaction! I enjoyed it

Anthony Picard

@thebeefmaster you still here huh? I thought there was much more things in the world that you were suppose to give your attention to 😂

TalynStarburst

You will be missed..........NOT

thebeefmaster

@thebeeaster thank you Internet toxic person, right back at you 👋

TalynStarburst

Happy Trails To You........

thebeefmaster

@thebeefmaster This matter doesn’t concern you and it has been settled, so mind your own business

TalynStarburst

There is no TV show, movie, etc. that is worth getting all butthurt over. It is all just people dressing up and pretending to be make-believe characters. There are much more important things in this world to which you could give your attention.

thebeefmaster

For the record, the objectively correct answer is that Supernatural ends with Season 10, Episode 3. Everything after that point doesn't count.

Jeff Cornell

Thank you

TalynStarburst

Done. May take a few days to come through.

Josh (Target Audience)

Yeah, I loved this episode but watching it again, it's not great as a standalone.

Linda Thackeray

I put some thought into your offer and decided that it is in my best interest to take you up on it. I appreciate you making this offer and please do prorate it for the time that I was a member here. No hard feelings and my best to you guys on continuing to grow.

TalynStarburst

Funny, I was thinking “The Body” would have been interesting since it’s so not what you would expect from the show(normally it wouldn’t be recommended because of spoilers and how it’s strengths are so different from the norm on the show, but let’s be honest…they’re never doing the series, so I think fear of spoilers is a moot point here). 🤷‍♂️

Todd “Canuck” Schmuck

If you would like a refund for your annual purchase we have no problem issuing that. Don’t want you paying for content you don’t enjoy. Let us know.

Josh (Target Audience)

Exactly what Boney said. When you guys announced that you were doing these things when your Patreon users got to a certain point, I got excited feeling that you two were goi by to be trying all kinds of different things. You said that you would start listening to your audience.. I’ve been following you guys since the 7th or 8th reaction of TOS, so I decided it was time and joined your page here for a whole year. I voted for this episode not because of the series.. but the creativity of it. And I was excited for you guys to view it with the mindset that you would not still be interested in the series but may find this episode at least interesting. I was there with you guys when you viewed the first season of Buffy.. yeah it wasn’t your cup of tea, but you two at least had fun with it and it was still fun to watch. This was nothing but painful with the negativity from Alex.. and I’m near the point where I may be regretting taking on that year membership.. not just over this. You guys are turning more into critics imo where as it used to be a lot more fun. With that said, I had enjoyed watching you all grow and good quality changes. I hope you continue to grow and do well.. it just may be without me at some point. Either way, I doubt I will partake in anymore suggestions. Have a good night.

TalynStarburst

You could dislike something more respectfuly. This was supposed to be a reward for the majority of your paying subscribers. You guys said that you would react to anything we chose, and then we waited to see this. I would rather you had refused to react to Buffy again. I'm not one to hold a grudge. I just want you to know that I think it was a mistake to make something you know most of your audience enjoys, but you were prepared to hate a potential option. I had hoped that you might find the episode okay, but say that you still weren't interested in watching more. This was worse than that.

Boney

Wasn’t my cup of tea before this episode, wasn’t my cup of tea afterwards. Sorry! - Alex

Josh (Target Audience)

Yeah.. it’s one thing not to like the episode, but it’s another thing to have attitude about it before even watching it.. all he did was look for the negatives and took swipes and Joss when he could. I’m glad I’m not the only one to see the attitude and it changed my perspective a bit after this as I tend to like Alex and some of his views.

TalynStarburst

So, I think we chose Hush because it was Halloween time. When I was a kid, Hush was really scary for me, and that made it cool. I don't experience fear from media anymore, but I have nostalgia for stuff like A Nightmare on Elm Street for having made me feel the fun of being scared when I was younger. Besides all that, I don't like Alex's attitude. He went into this wanting to hate it, and he did just that. I'm sorry we forced him to watch it by throwing money at him. Poor guy.

Boney

14 minutes before the plot ever arrives. THIS is the Buffy episode they chose? Is there really nothing better?

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

@thebeefmaster: Yes, I value the opinion of certain people. And yes, I sometimes read season plot summaries to get an idea if it might be worth my time to continue watching a very, very long running show. Sometimes shows rebound after a weak season. Not sure why you're being so defensive about this.

Lovok

Yep, my bad.

Linda Thackeray

You can't really just jump into S2E14 without watching S2E13. It's basically a two-parter.

Lovok

Interesting that you guys called out the added “whoosh” foley sound effects for punches/kicks, etc. Based on that, you guys should avoid Hercules & Xena at all costs, because both those shows are full of those types of sound effects. A pity, as I’m a huge Xena fan, but oh well.

Matt Everkoul

the patreon folks are gonna keep making you watch this just to torture Alex.

penoyer79

I loved Buffy so much at the time and thought it was simply genius but it has really not aged well. The style felt so fresh and funny at the time but now it feels very dated. Even more noticeable is how problematic a lot of it is, which is ironic given how much it was acclaimed for breaking barriers. Definitely time to move on.

Richard Stone

And what is wrong with reading plot summaries to decide if someone wants to continue watching a show or not? 🤷‍♂️

TalynStarburst

lol Alex has his mind made up before watching this. What’s funny is that he had more fun with season 1 over a year ago before they had their couch settings. I mean he still didn’t care much for it but had better attitude back then in the least.

TalynStarburst

Honestly Buffy is mostly just OK if you only look at just a single episode, especially since the thing that really set it apart, the dialogue, is so widely imitated these days. It’s the character and story arcs where it really shines. The arc in the back half of season 2 blew my mind and is what hooked me on the show.

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

Sometimes entertainment just doesn't catch you, even if they technically have all the things on paper that make it for you. In this case, it seems Buffy just doesn't work for Alex, and that's fine, I'd leave it and not come back.

Thomas Cole

I didn't watch Buffy back in the day. Now I know why. Thanks for doing this reaction. There is some entertainment value in watching you two gentlemen be tortured. 🤪

T’Pynyn of Vulcan

Same junk as Buffy in my opinion

AzoriusMage

Popped in my S4 DVD. Started reading these comments while it loaded. Popped it right back out. One hour of my life saved. Appreciate the effort!

Ian Ramsey

Angel was better

Jason Lallathin

I would wager that there are plenty of people who like Supernatural but do not care for Buffy. That is just the natural way likes and dislikes work. No hate, just personal taste, from one show to the next to the next.

thebeefmaster

Disagree. I liked SPN but if they didn't like Buffy, why would they like a show so similar to it? Probably all the shows from the WB/CW of that time should be off the table. Very similar, many Buffy inspired in themes and style.

Kristina Weber

Fascinating reaction! I grew up with Buffy, literally the first show I remember falling in love with and it came out just as I was going into adolescence. Also, I'm was a California girl so extra relatable to the characters here. I've never met anyone who didn't love this show once they started watching it. And I'm not offended or bothered at all that you don't. It shows me how much personal taste factors in. Like, I enjoy the monster genre and the tropes that Buffy embraces and it's not your thing, which is fine! Reminds me of another reactor channel who started watching one of my faves and just didn't like it/get into it. Sometimes things aren't to your taste and that is ok! We can still both love Star Trek for instance. Live long and prosper!

Kristina Weber

If there was an episode for you two have jumped on and possibly follow through, it would have been episode 14 of S2. That one is the one that made me a fan. It's a game changer resonated throughout the rest of season 2 and most of S3. That being said, I more or less predicted your reactions for this one. Not after hearing your discussions about Trek. That's why I was hoping you guys get around to Babylon 5's Passing through Gethsemane.

Linda Thackeray

Brothers!

thebeefmaster

You continued to read plot summaries and depend on the opinions of others????? Trouble moving on????? I see...........

thebeefmaster

We have no plans to watch it at this time (or any other series), but no I wouldn’t say forever done

Josh (Target Audience)

Is Quantum Leap in the forever done section too?

Narnman

Yep

Josh (Target Audience)

Nice, good for her

Josh (Target Audience)

Since you won’t be revisiting this universe again, I’ll just spoil the fact that Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase) became a regular on Angel, which had its first season during Buffy season 4.

James H

Yeah... The Body is far and away the best episode of the series... but it's an earned episode. you can't just show it as a one off and expect the same impact.

Mithroch

I was in my late 20's when the show first aired and discovered it after renting the first season from Blockbuster (a CRAZY long time ago now) and really enjoying it. I managed to catch up when it was aired on, oh, USA or something in reruns? Fell in love with it then. I rewatch it every couple of years ago. Its shows its age sometimes, but I still get a lot of enjoyment out of Buff (and Angel). I get it if it's not your cup of tea, though. And I love your guys' honest take on things. Glad you got a chance to see it again and make a fair assessment.

Paul O'Neal

oh god no.

penoyer79

So I'm one of those who falls into the nostalgia category as this was one of the series of my youth. That being said, Buffy is either a hit or a miss when viewed through today's lense. All and all, a good, honest reaction. Thanks as always. 🖖

Dru Blood

I don't mind if it's one or two characters, or fits the setting of a series, like Teenagers in High School as Buffy was, but it got far too popular in writer's rooms and was EVERYWHERE. When all the characters speak in the same tone and the same voice, they become interchangeable and indistinct. Meaning and nuance is lost. In shows like that, everyone is a snarky, sarcastic ass, but all the other characters magically know the intention behind the words as playful, meaningless banter, where the reality is dialogue like that would lead to toxic relationships, misunderstandings and resentment. I.e, Social media. But hollywood, in a quest for dramatic conflict, somehow sweeps that under the rug so as to not question their writing choices. Conflict instead comes from plot, and the way characters talk is utterly disconnected from that. I think that's why more recent media feels so disjointed, because dialogue has somehow become seperated from interplay, consequence, conflict and plotting. For example, a show where a character develops pathos by saying they don't talk to their family because they are murderers, followed by that same character being in an action scene where they whoop and cheer at vaporizing people in defense is disjointed, disingenuous and just poor writing. Dialogue, plot and conflict have to support each other, they don't exist in a vacuum, and it's increasingly been a problem in media lately.

Nolan

The idea behind this episode was that Buffy was getting criticized as being nothing but a bunch of witty dialogue, so Joss decided to turn that on its head.

James H

This was a weak season overall. The transition from high school to college. The loss of Angel... To me the most obvious answer would have been to end the show after season 3, but they pushed on, it's a series of highs & lows from here on in. Still, the series as a whole is epic & legendary!

Owen Madden

Hopefully we are done with this show

AzoriusMage

God I hated that tone in every character at the time. My wife used to watch Gilmore Girls and the pace and snippy nature of the dialogue was just awful

AzoriusMage

No, I was done somewhere ~S6 when it become obvious the original premise of the show had reached its natural end. Easy to read plot summaries of the seasons after that to confirm the stories were effectively repeating themselves every year. Also heard from others who did watch on further.

Lovok

Here's the thing about Buffy. It's the birth of the Whedon dialogue style hollywood became obsessed with. The snarky, flippant, sarcastic jokey tone that in reality would foster resentment amongst people and would be considered unprofessional by quite a few. The fact Alex and Josh felt distanced from Star Wars at a time when dialogue like that entered the IP should be an indicator to their tastes in this matter. That the Treks they've seen so far has relatively little of that writing style is probably part of why they like it so. I think knowing thus we can get a little more accurate in what would be to their tastes. And I don't think Buffy is it.

Nolan

I never really watched Buffy: The Vampire Slayer ON PURPOSE, but there was some show that I used to watch early in the morning when I was working at the computer 20 years ago. Buffy: The Vampire Slayer came on right after it, and I was too lazy to change the channel. I seem to remember some episodes with Spike being amusing, but that's about all I remember.

Chtphr Rrr

Meh. Bring back BSG or Game of Thrones please.

Clyde Frog

Saving people, hunting things, just like Dad.

Angelaina Marie

Im not shocked . Im meh on this show, ive seen it all several times cause my wife and daughters are all over it. its a campy fun watch 90s TV show. overall its pretty mindless.

Lt Dan I scream

Season 4 of Buffy isnt my favorite season. Still though, ok episode.

Connor Fallon

Excited for you to watch The Expanse! While Star Trek was a huge influence on me and largely responsible for my love of sci-fi. The Expanse is my favorite sci-fi show period. I love how the show uses real world science to build a realistic, lived in sci-fi setting mostly without relying on hokey space magic tech.

Chris Woytuik

The body is an amazing episode probably the best episode of buffy, but it wouldn't have had the same impact for Josh and Alex who aren't invested in the characters.

Chris Woytuik

Great intro to Seth Green’s “Oz” too! It usually takes people by surprise as they don’t know that he is in the show.

TalynStarburst

I live by the credo "To each his own".

thebeefmaster

Good suggestions. I'm thinking Halloween (S2E6) is probably the best of those options. Can't recall anyone who didn't enjoy that episode & premise.

Lovok

So, you watched all 15 seasons????? That may deserve an explanation.

thebeefmaster

You watched this sober??? XD o7

James Knight

You think Buffy is a waste of time then go recommend Supernatural? Really? A show that had 5 seasons worth of stories then ran on repeat for 10 more seasons?

Lovok

When the time is right, quite a way down the road obviously, I think the TV series "Supernatural" (2005) might tickle their fancy.

thebeefmaster

It’s a good question! You’re always going to run into “this would be better if they knew the characters more” issues so I take that as a given with every episode mostly … I’d probably go either Halloween, Band Candy, or School Hard. I think all of those are fun romps that have a lot of action and humor and intriguing plot points. Of course my preference is to twist arms and get people to watch from the beginning, but if I had to choose just one I think I’d go one of those three.

Joshua Taylor

Yeah the music episode is only fantastic if you have been following the story and know the characters.

TalynStarburst

Oh god.. I rewatched Buddy a few years ago and “The Body” took a bigger toll on me than it did the first time I watched it. Maybe we should have selected that episode for these guys just to hit them with something more real lol

TalynStarburst

I think Josh would have been more opened to watching more Buffy, but it would have clashed with Alex as he already has his mind made up and it clearly shows. I’ve been there with a friend before on watching something and it completely zaps the fun of it all.. and that’s how I felt watching this reaction too. I was way more interested in Josh’s opinion, but felt the negative vibes every time Alex said something. If Josh was ever to do a solo take, I would be on board with him diving back into Buffy lol.

TalynStarburst

Honestly I think that ship has sailed in general. For all that I have enjoyed about this show in the past, much of what made it unique in its time has become common and even over done since. You may be able to hook some new watchers if they are interested enough in seeing actors in different roles but not much else.

Julie Carter

The show progressed from season 1 as far as storytelling, acting, character development, etc goes. Not so much as a form of style if you thought we meant that it would change its 90s ways in the time it aired which was the 90s.. and the campiness is part of what makes the show fun. With that said, I feel that Josh was the reasonable one here who took at as it was and enjoyed it while Alex came in with his mind already made up. I picked this episode for the reasons I listed before.. it was a good story of an episode and unique in its own way with the creation and thought process and villains. I wasn’t expecting either of you to dive into the characters nor be persuaded to go back to watch the full series.. as you know, Farscape is the series that I hope you take on fully, but I didn’t pick an episode from that series because I would rather see you watch from start to end. And with Buffy, I figured your journey would end here.. but at least you seen what it is capable of in a good episode 👍

TalynStarburst

I was a massive Buffy fan back when it first aired, but it hasn't aged particularly well. There are a few standout episodes, however I've never thought of "Hush" as one of them. Season 5's "The Body" never fails to choke me up - possibly the best episode of the show.

James Johnson

If you've only got one episode to try to get someone interested in the show, what would it be? "Hush" is typically the best choice because it has a unique plot, legit creepy villains, and is intelligible enough to understand what's going on without any outside context. Agree that the musical ep is a terrible choice, as it's almost completely UN-intelligible without all the backstory and context.

Lovok

I was one of those who felt Hush was a good pick, but between their reaction and what you're saying I now think I was wrong. I'm curious: What episode or set of possible episodes might you recommend to try to 'sell' the show to new people? Not Alex and Josh, I think that ship has sailed, but just in general?

Forbidden Donut

Buffy was always a bit hit or miss for me, but I've always been skeptical of people showing Hush or the musical episode as the "showcase" episode that will hook people on the show because so much of the power of these episodes comes from the investment you've made in the characters over the years. I just don't think they work as standalones to get people drawn in. I will say, the show does noticeably improve after Series 1 - you all might not have been able to notice it in a one off viewing because of the sheer Joss-ity that permeates the show, but the overall quality of the episodes significantly improved over time and when they were firing on all cylinders, the show could be very entertaining. Completely understand why it wouldn't hook you, though.

Joshua Taylor

Different strokes, etc. I would say the horror elements in this episode are way less hokey than Night Terrors.

John M.

The best aspects of Buffy boil down to characters and themes. The characters develop and grow quite significantly over the course of the series, and the way individual episode themes come together to serve a season's themes is quite well done, especially for a show of its time. Major characters die in the show as well, which was not common back then. S2, beyond upping the budget et al, is far deeper thematically and begins to dive into more serialized storytelling and character development. Also has some gutsy, dark, shocking moments. I've always felt the peak of the show was S5, with S2 as a runner-up. Ultimately, the show is about growing up as centered on a 90's female lead, using the supernatural as a vehicle to tell those stories. S1-S3 are the high school years, S4 is the college/transition year, while S5-S7 are the adult years. The tone of the show changes the most in those later seasons (far darker), albeit still retaining a core of what makes the show what it is. Either the vibe of the show -- an intentional blend of horror/fantasy, teen drama, and comedy -- works for you, or it doesn't. Clearly it doesn't hit for you guys, and that's totally fine, but the show does actually have a lot of thought and depth put into it, despite its veneer. This is ultimately why it still has a strong following to this day.

Lovok

Based off of Season 1 and now this episode, I hope they just leave it alone. Since they seem this disinterested in the characters and their stories, I think it's dead in the water. As someone who loved the show back in the day, I don't think I need to see a hundred or so more reactions with them not really caring, fixating on 90's tropes and background stuff instead of the story, and jabbing at Whedon (I understand why, it just gets old and further signifies they're not into the episode enough to let go of the opportunity to make the same jab). Best to leave it be IMO. Thank God it's going so well with TNG lol

Forbidden Donut

Honestly I think all their comments are 100% solid and that's from someone who loves Buffy (Though more of an Angel fan). It's a show that's strength was very much a YA style character interactions, relationships, and growing into themselves. That's not a genre or style I ever got the vibe would hook you. Also Hush is a fantastic episode but I am always confused of it being shown to people who aren't into Buffy, because how standout and different parts of it are. The show experiments but not *that* often so if this did bring you in. I feel it would only lead to disappointment.

Kenneth Elder

I think it's one of those shows that if you happen to 'get hooked' (characters, setting, and/or story) you're probably going to get really invested in it and enjoy how it all unfolds, and unfortunately if not then, well, the above is the reaction instead. It's too bad, but it is what it is. I found the show as a teenager, fell in love with it, got really invested, and thoroughly enjoyed the ride. Now that I'm a lot older, I look back on it and it doesn't do it for me the way it did twenty five years ago, but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for it, and I still fondly remember several highlights from it. And it's still fun when I come across reactors who happen to 'get hooked' because they tend to appreciate it despite how it's aged. Oh well!

Forbidden Donut

Saying it's stereotypical 90s is silly -- it aired during the 90s of course it's going to represent those times. What I like about both of you is the honesty of your reactions and the visceral feel on your takes. But it's a bit of a double edged sword -- some of the "zeitgeist " of being alive (and being a teenager / early adulthood) during those times comes off as "shlock" when you look back at in through the lens of current day. This episode is in the top-5 for most people watching the full series. As you deduced the ending leads to several major plot points and the I'm glad at least the symbolism of having both Buffy and Riley sit silently -- now with the ability to talk, but not the words -- was not lost on you. The best parts of Buffy really aren't the supernatural or horror elements. It's the character drama and long arcs that play out over the seasons. That isn't to say that the horror and fantasy doesn't have a place, but when you delve deeper it becomes a very compelling story about how people grow up -- how people grow up differently -- and how differences that seem so important in high school seem to fade away as you get a bit older and a bit more mature. I wish you had stuck with it one more season.

Matthew Ganz

I have never seen any Buffy.....so losing my cherry here. Finished watching. Well, that was a painful waste of time that cost me at least 10 IQ points. I would scream but what good would that do?
