PATREON EXCLUSIVE EDITED REACTION - Superman: The Movie (1978)

If you continue watching the Christopher Reeve Superman films, there are two versions of "Superman II", the theatrical version and the Richard Donner cut. Donner was the director of the first two movies and shot them back-to-back. He left the second movie over changes (reshoots) the studio wanted to make to the movie and another director was brought in to finish it. The original version of the movie (the Donner cut) was released in 2006 and coincided with the release of "Superman Returns". That movie ignores the third and fourth movies and picks up after the second movie.

Once you guys are done with Star Trek, you should check out Smallville. Definitely watch Superman II.

Hey guys, is there anyone I can talk to about a Patreon membership issue? Was a Legacy Target Audience -$5 Tier since 2023, then upgraded to monthly $10 tier- Target Audience Member this morning in order to watch Superman: The Movie Patron Exclusive video, but it wouldn't let me despite the upgrade (it was discounted -$5 off for 1st month). So, I ended up signing up for the $10 tier again. Did I make a mistake & sign up twice?

Don’t watch the β€œmaking of” before seeing Superman 2. You’re probably okay, but they filmed both films at the same time, so there may be spoilers.

I've always been a huge Superman fan. I've got nearly every Superman movie and series from this movie until now. I grew up on these, the Fleisher cartoons and then Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman. You guys would probably really have fun with Lois & Clark. Smallville came out when I was in High School and is probably my favorite Superman & Lois Lane. Also Superman & Lois is really good but you want some more Superman content under your belt before watching that one.

Since the two of you have brought up the question of Clark Kent identity versus Superman and why don't people know,... In addition to the slouching, which you observed, Clark Kent has hollowed out the heels of his shoes to ensure that C.K. is shorter than Superman. You also have the spit curl being missing from Clark Kent and someone is mild-mannered as Clark couldn't possibly be Superman. One other factor that did not occur to me as a child but was mentioned to me in my adulthood is the fact that many people probably don't conceive of Superman having a different identity. They just think he's Superman 24/7/365, which makes some sense considering he makes appearances all over the world, all the time, thanks to his super speed.

I have always enjoyed the "special edition" version. In no small part because it includes the three booby traps Luthor has guarding the entrance to his lair. Many behind the scenes stories byt I will leave those to others and/or your own discovery. I am glad you two have now seen one of my all-time favorite movies. Christopher Reeves is THE iconic representation of Superman.

My favorite movie of all time, and a treat to watch along with you! Just bumped up to audience member tier to watch, and to show appreciation for all the great content. πŸ‘ Thanks for this!

If you want to read a good Superman story that's recent but which keeps to the core of the character while also having some great action scenes and art, I STRONGLY recommend checking out "The Warworld Saga." It coined a new label for Superman that I particularly like, even more than the old title "Man of Steel": "The Un-blooded Sword." To put it in some context and without giving away too much, Superman and a handpicked team of other heroes go to a planet called Warworld to liberate the slaves of the planet, including what may be Kryptonians. On the Warworld Superman's powers are drastically reduced, and those who came to liberate the world instead find themselves slaves of it. Despite his loss of powers (he's still very strong and difficult to kill, but he is no longer invulnerable) Superman is determined to maintain his morals and help the people he came to save, and as a Gladiator ends up leading a revolution...despite never killing a single enemy, hence earning the Un-blooded Sword title. It's a great story that I would describe as an odd blend of Planet Hulk with All-Star Superman that sounds like it shouldn't work...yet somehow really does!

The 1966 Batman movie is a terrific film. So funny. Some of my favorite iterations of Batman villains are from that show/movie.

Josh? How can you NOT know who David Prowse is?? I feel like I need to reexamine my life at this point...😒

Cheers! Superman 2 Richard Donner cut it is πŸ––

The Ninth Doctor

If you do watch the sequel eventually, it’s in a really strange position. There’s two very different versions of it out there. They fired the director and reshot most of the film. But many years later they released the original director’s version, and as you’d expect most of the footage is different. Not even a director’s cut, it’s basically a different film.

No official spot. You can comment here or message us or the community chat. Really anywhere

Not formally - wasn't sure how/where submissions for the movie lottery go - is there a thread for it somewhere? It's been a long week at work πŸ˜†

The Ninth Doctor

Suggestion? Do you already have your own entry picked?

Josh (Target Audience)

Loved this - can I add a movie suggestion for the lottery to be Superman 2? πŸ˜‰ Specifically the Richard Donner cut from 2006... πŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈ

The Ninth Doctor

There are two reasons for the extended special effects sequence at the Fortress of Solitude that transitions us into the modern day (of 1978). The first is simply that effects sequences like this were common in the 70s. After 1969's "2001: A Space Odyssey" a lot of of other movies from the era had sequences like that... like "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," "The Black Hole" and even "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory." The second reason is to subtly explain how Clark Kent wasn't drafted into the Vietnam War... which had just ended 5 years before the film was released.

"You will believe a man can fly." Many people say "Superman is boring." Which is a fair criticism, becuase he is so strong, so the drama has to be placed elsewhere... BUT, for me, it is a toss up between these first two Superman movies, and the classic Fleischer cartoons. I don't like Superman "gritty." I just don't. It's like Doing Jesus holding a machine gun, it just doesn't feel right.

They were filming both Superman 1 and 2 at the same time. They were about 3/4 finished with both when they realized to make their release date, and not run out of money, they would have to concentrate on finishing part 1. So the casting of the villains for part two was very much intentional and they actually worked the entire time.

Atomic Age Pictures

Man of steel is my ideal realistic Superman . People always forget how many different variations of superman come out in comics …100s

Steve the greeeen hand

A timeless classic, setting the stage for the modern cinema revival of comic books. Also, they filmed Superman 2 during & immediately after this one - originally with the same director (Richard Donner). He was fired for creative differences - the execs wanted a lighter tone, reshooting a lot of 2 with a new director. Donner later came back in 2006 with WB for a Directors Cut to S2.

The Ninth Doctor

This was a pivotal movie for me. My most memorable movie experience. This was my β€œStar Wars”. I was so blown away as a kid. Nothing ever looked like this this before. Christopher Reeves will always be the best Superman.
