UNCUT - Data's Day (TNG S4E11) | Star Trek Journey 192

UNCUT - Data's Day (TNG S4E11) | Star Trek Journey 192

Comments

McFadden a real dancer

Lyric

Can’t wait till u get to season 6 because then you’ll have to start watching DS9 for certain things to make……..sense

Lyric

8.2/10 for me, very good episode. Data's my favorite character and I loved being able to slow down and show more of his life, plus the Cheif getting more focus

Steven Cressler

for me it is S - not just because Data is my fav - but it moves me to tears at the end after making me laugh so many times - love the episode

jan

It's a bit surprising that Data believes the myth that Vulcans are incapable of lying, but then again, Bones believed it too and one of his best friends was a Vulcan.

James H

I can’t guys to get into season six!

Just another Red Shirt

To defend the minor b plot, which this season has proven they will drop when they want to This is Data's Day. The Enterprise is duped by a spy and is on the brink of destruction with a potential war to break out between the Federation and the Star Empire. Events he himself is personally involved with, momentous in history, any other day the a-plot, the main focus, capital H History The only reason the 20% of that is included at all is because it interrupted dealing with what he actually cares about, his friends. Maddox is getting is a long account of interpersonal struggles and bettering his understanding to help friends and "oh btw, yeah there were like 11 warbirds about to barrel down on us, but to get back to the wedding,"

llama

I'm probably defining execution different than you. For me, I'm referring to the execution of the concept. I think you're talking about the execution of the script as written.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

I must be the only person here that doesn't second guess "the execution." There are plot holes, technical and continuity goofs, poor acting, and just damn stupid ideas. Any of these things make a given episode less, and that is the only "execution" that matters.

Jovet

@marty63026 It was always there.

Jovet

One of their best episodes too

tyranusfan

On Orion’s Belt? 😁

tyranusfan

Ah, ok, maybe that’s it. I don’t watch on Blue-Ray.

Joey Sampson

Well it’s supposed to be greenish like Vulcans, but I have noticed that some Romulans appear orange in TNG. It might be a Blu-ray effect

tyranusfan

Penpals angers me because the concept is perfect but the execution is so botched across so many levels.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

"I have negotiated countless peace talks, increasing the prestige of the Federation and strengthening their empire, but it was all a LIE HAHAHAHA... wait" I choose to believe she killed/replaced the ambassador recently-ish.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

🧡

Michael Metrick

Hey guys, I've so enjoyed watching these with you. It's been like watching them for the first time again.

Michael Metrick

You will service us!

Strife

I don’t remember the hair color change gadget at all, wonder if that was added for the remaster 🧐

marty63026

Yeah, That was bad. Made seem like Data is depressed or something, weird

marty63026

That comparison isn't quite accurate. Shelby going over Riker's head was merely a breach of etiquette. If T'Pel had actually committed to requesting information on the deflector dish, Data would have been required to inform Picard as a matter of protocol. He only didn't report it because she canceled the request. That being said, I still don't blame Data. He does have a moment of doubt, but he ultimately defaults to standard protocol. It's completely understandable given the way he thinks. The big unknown is Picard. He had a lot of contact with T'Pel while she was onboard and clearly had misgiving about her plan based on his objections. If anyone had reason to be suspicious it would be him. What would he have done if Data had told him? The thing to worry about wouldn't even be Picard. It would be the Star Fleet inquiry that would take place afterwards.

Paul Noad

The bug galaxy was inside the feline food supplement dish.

Jovet

Orange skin???

Joey Sampson

Tom SO RIGHT. I just updated Riker to 8 because it much more likely Riker got lucky than Chief O'Brien after getting married

Prof Moff

Owen yes 2 i i as in imaginary number so broccoli has 2 holodecks hubba-bubbas like Geordi has the 1 i with Brahms

Prof Moff

Did you also notice how full the dish was when he pulled it out of the replicator versus when he set it upon the floor? hah

Jovet

There was more than one! But only one was moving around a lot.

Jovet

One of the best Romulan characters ever. And the "another ....accident." line still tickles me.

Jovet

@Timothy Nikiforovs That is true, but the more he tried to push out his humanity and just "be Vulcan" the more he wasn't. I think the writers of whichever film figured that out. Spock set up many of the tenants we consider to be "core Vulcan" but my point about him not being one still stands.

Jovet

Same here. Did notice the alien getting her hair color changed. I'm sure that technology excited some in the audience at the time.

Jovet

You make a good point about the characters that should be able to figure things out. Data does not have actual intuition, so he can only go by what he comes up with by logic. We have all seen how stupid Starfleet really is, so it's pretty easy for me to buy in to the idea that T'Pel has been a Romulan spy in the Federation for years (decades?) and nobody has noticed.

Jovet

I mean, it is literally what she was hired for. Eye candy on the bridge.

Jovet

It's not strange to me. If the bride's parents are deceased, someone else, often a fatherly figure, can step in that role. It's honorary, not literal.

Jovet

“I tend to see it more as the actress not knowing how to play a Vulcan.” 🤦

Jovet

There are plenty of examples in Star Trek of technology or its developments that should enact far-reaching consequences than what the writer intended to depict... but this is not one of them.

Jovet

Shut the audience out? It's a mystery, you either figure it out like Alex did, or you don't. I fail to grasp the disdain for this.

Jovet

The Pizza Hut near me has only been open for delivery once in the past 2.2 years that I've checked, and that was a few weeks ago. Needless to say I stopped checking very often.

Jovet

The resemblance is probably intentional production-wise, but coincidental in-universe.

Jovet

Our old enemies: memes, emojis, and emotes. Few of which make any sense without external context. Communication cannot happen without mutual external context. GAWD I can't wait until we got to that episode...

Jovet

@marty63026 In the universe of NewWho, "dancing" means something rather different... (i.e. porking)

Jovet

Yeah, I think A is about right for this one. It's memorable for the unusual format and O'Brien's wedding, and it's pretty good overall, but it's not one of those legendary eps like MoaM, Defector, YE, or BOBW. I do like the day in the life angle, and doing that from Data's perspective in particular was a great choice. I do feel like Data reverted back to late S1/early S2 Data here in some ways. Just last episode he was catching on that giving time estimates down to the second was irritating and stopped at minutes, whereas here he seems unusually obtuse about any kind of social interactions or human behavior. It's entertaining certainly, especially the "lunkhead scene", but it does make the episode feel like a throwback in a way. It is interesting that right after Wesley left and they no longer had to throw him a B plot every 5 eps or so, they decide to give Colm the most screen time he's got thus far(if I'm not mistaken). Not that I'm complaining, I'll take O'Brien over Wesley any day. As for the spy plot, it was fine. I've never been particularly fond of the performance of the spy posing as the ambassador myself. It could be argued that her seeming "off" is because she's a Romulan pretending to be Vulcan, but if she's been undercover for years or decades, would she not have perfected her mannerisms to avoid scrutiny? One part of this plotline I did rather like was Adm. Mendak. Alan Scarfe has a very distinct voice you can't miss, but moreover I appreciate how reserved he was in the handling of the situation. He didn't go all Tomalak and start threatening to take the Enterprise as a war trophy, he didn't open fire. He basically said "fair enough, you figured out our plan, but you're too late to do anything about it. Best you just accept you lost and go home, that way I don't have to blow up your ship". He's playing the game, he's working to give his people the advantage against the federation, but he's not itching to start a war. Couple little pieces of TNG trivia. First, this was the first episode to air in 1991. Second, and completely unrelated to this episode, I got curious as to how many TNG eps started with "The", and it's 41. 41 of 178 episodes! And some of those are 2 parters like Farpoint and BOBW, so less than 178 episode names. That's like 1/4 of the ep titles. I think the 6 ep stretch from The Enemy to The High Ground was the worst for this. Nothing inherently wrong with a title that starts with "The" but it can feel uninspired if it's too common.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Hello was downright creepy in Quantum Leap too

Darren Seal

Big Galaxy. Not Bug Galaxy. That's not for awhile yet.

paultardspambot .

Sorry, but y'all have no knowledge of how intelligence works. It not Bond types, it's the quiet types you never notice and they are usually on the foriegn "embasy staff" or at least that's their cover, having a major ambassador be a deep undercover spy for years to where she's risen enough in rank to influence federation policy- yeah there probably is a ton of stuff she knows and something they want to know right now. Personally I could do my own speculations in line with future continuity but that sort of thing isn't allowed. From a writer's pov, it opens doors. They don't have to even know what they took now. It opens up future contunuity. But maybe it'll never come up again. That's the thing with Trek, it's a bug galaxy and you never now for sure.

paultardspambot .

Can we talk about how the whole Romulan mess was ON Data? He DID have some intuition of some sort about the ambassador testing his security protocols but because she technically didn't violate any guidelines he didn't, if he had trusted his intuition he would have alerted the rest and the "ambassador" would have been captured as a prisoner.

paultardspambot .

For this episode specifically, I re-subscribed to Paramount+ (yes, I know it sucks) and watched concurrently with this uncut reaction, a feat that took about three times due to being interrupted by a hurricane with power outages. But it was worth it cuz I'm glad to see y'all's full reaction to one of my favorite Star Trek episodes ever. If I'm to "sample" a TNG episode with a random person, I almost always choose Data's Day, because I consider it a perfect balance of slice of life, humanity, and suspense. And it pleases me to have witnessed y'all get here in your galactic journey. Thanks for creating so much contact and spoiling us on a regular basis.

Shortskirtsandexplosions

Josh & Alex loved an episode I loved, but a hair less than I loved it?!?! Time to get the pitchforks out.

Paul

Domino’s pizza smells like dog farts.

rear adm. crackbiscuit

The way that lady was looking at Riker when he was talking to her on the bridge, I'll give him a presumed but not explicit +1 for this episode.

TomEmilioDavies

He gets to ignore the next goodwill gesture OR can do something aggressive and say well you killed that pro-peace ambassador"

paultardspambot .

RIP

Timothy Nikiforovs

I suppose it's largely down to Spock being the original Vulcan character, and the fact that even though he was half human, there's a extreme bias toward his Vulcan side.

Timothy Nikiforovs

NIGHT CREW!!!! Beer me!

TomEmilioDavies

The Quest of Quoth Quirls, he was offscreen

Juan Tutrífor

Oh dammit, forgot about that one

Thicketdweller

Every kid who got an earfull from their dad after turning on the overhead light in the car while he's driving understands that one🤣

Timothy Nikiforovs

EnQounter at Farpoint was the exception

Timothy Nikiforovs

the various feline supplements are the previous cats that jumped on the desk one too many times

Timothy Nikiforovs

Well, someone pretending to be a bolian anyway

Timothy Nikiforovs

We finally get a pay off on one of Josh's earliest savant predictions. The orange cat. I'm not sure which season one reaction he mentions it in, but it was early on. If I remember correctly, he even paired it with Data.

Nerd's Gold

Thanks for pointing out that barbershop logo. Over the many times I've seen this episode, I never noticed it before. Also other new room is the "gift" store, with maybe higher energy replicators?

Stevtrek

I wonder if Data thinks that cat is a little too stringy, like I do? The real question is when Data said feline supplement number whatever was that for the cat or for himself? All these nutritional questions…

Thicketdweller

Gates is her middle name, she goes by her first name of Cheryl in her non-acting work.

Ron Hubbard Jr

Keiko O'Brien joins the TNG family.

Ron Hubbard Jr

Like Lonely Island and Akon said: Doesn't matter, had sex!

James Bottas

The Star Trek equivalent of “save and reload.” 😁

tyranusfan

30 years and I never saw it until Josh called it out!

tyranusfan

I remember him from Seven Days, but totaly forgot about the Seaquest role. That was a good one.

Keith S

Well, the trouble with this is that Leonard Nimoy laid the foundation of SO much that became “what a Vulcan is.” Everyone who came later based their take on him, including Mark Leonard (who was the best of them in my opinion).

tyranusfan

He was a very memorable villain on SeaQuest, and had a recurring role on Seven Days, a time travel series in the 90s

tyranusfan

On a tech note, I had to video from this one just totally cut out, go to black a couple times. I closed the app and reopened, then it was fine, until it did it again. I hope it is just a temporary issue with Patreon. It did it on more than one wi-fi too.

Mike Rogers

You should call the discussion “Josh’s Day”

tyranusfan

You probably don't remember but in TOS Conscience Of The King Kirk mentions how to give the crew the feel of day and night they use dimmer lighting during the night hours.

Mike Rogers

I ❤️ these style episodes in genre shows. Some of my other favorites include The Adventures of Superboy 3x15 “A Day in the Double Life” and Xena: Warrior Princess 2x15 “A Day in the Life.”

Matt Everkoul

Did you notice the bug in the cat food as the cat eats the food? :)

DataL0re

The great thing about this episode is the reminder that the Enterprise is a place fully of people that are living there day to day lives like people everywhere. Between all the Starfleet duties and missions there are 1000 plus people living on this ship that still are dealing with everyday things like daycare, school, haircuts. Starfleet and civilian alike.

Brian

This would be a tough episode to do a teaser for.

Greg Quinn

Mendek was played by Alan Scarfe I've seen him in a lot of stuff over the years. His rather distinctive way of talking made for some interesting characters. Sadly he died April 28th of this year.

Keith S

Ah... I'm sure it's been said before, but you guys are gonna love Deep Space Nine.

Owen Madden

Real windows are better

Derek Orr

Me too!

Owen Madden

1:17:30 That's not fair, though. Spock isn't a true Vulcan. He's half human. To hold Spock as the archetype of all Vulcans is misguided. It's sort-of like holding Worf as the archetype of all Klingons. He may be all Klingon, but he wasn't raised in the culture. Everything he knows about it he had to learn second-hand. If you want a "true Vulcan" you should first turn to Sarek, even though his appearances are limited. Keeping all of that in mind... Ambassador T'Pel was a Romulan masquerading as a Vulcan. The actress did an excellent job!

Jovet

"I'm the dude, playing a dude, disguised as another dude!"

tyranusfan

1:15:35 She's a Romulan who has been been a spy disguised as a Vulcan the entire time. She has been infiltrated inside the Federation for a long time, but we don't know how long. For whatever reason, her spy-time was over, so the Romulans orchestrated these "diplomatic negotiations" to get her back home without revealing her spy-ness.

Jovet

Alex should remember that, he commented kilodyne’s Which are real science a kilodyne is 1000 dimes a dine is like 0.00001 Newton’s which becomes a facet of some kind of mass times something squared. Anyway, you guys can look it up on Google if you wanna know it’s for real

Thicketdweller

I think her performance as a Vulcan was bad. I tend to see it more as the actress not knowing how to play a Vulcan. She certainly seemed to be trying to convince the crew and the audience she was one. But if the actress was trying to convey a not-100%-convincing-Romulan-playing-a-Vulcan, that alone should have tipped off the crew. She was fine as the Romulan. Hey, I get it - playing a Vulcan well is hard. Nimoy was the model. Not all actors can pull it off nearly as well.

Collin Freeman

1:09:14 Huh? The computer talked to Data in his quarters, and outside the holodeck just before the dance lesson scene. And in "The Loss" the computer made some alarm announcements when they were trying to dislodge from and escape the 2D creatures. Not really very memorable lines, but they're there.

Jovet

Well, Keiko got her traditional Japanese wedding, and O'Brien got his traditional Irish wedding. What else could you ask for?

Sherpa Jones

Exactly, after The Pulaski Rescue nobody in the federation ever ages more that a few days or ever gets hurt again. Of course you already have your silver eyes and Q powers right? Because Starfleet started taking millions to the galactic barrier annually for their God treatment, right after Gary Mitchell.

Alan Thompson

I loved that it shows that on an average day, Worf, Data, and Riker hold regular watches on the bridge with an entirely unnamed crew. That is naval tradition and is only mentioned in passing. You wouldn't expect to see all the main characters on the bridge together for half the day and then an entirely different crew at night. You always want your senior staff at different stages of work, recreation, sleep so that if there is an emergency, you don't have 3 very tired Sr. officers.

Sherpa Jones

Hmm, one wonders if Data himself has one or more special holodeck programs?

Sherpa Jones

On a related note, ocean vessels run the bridge/wheelhouse under zero lighting at night for navigation purposes. It is harder to make out navigation hazards, other ships, the sea activity, etc. in pitch black if your pupils are restricted by artificial light. Also the forward decks are darkened or windows covered in black closures. I see this often on car ferries, but cruise ships and naval vessels would have the same requirements. So although ships sensors work fine in all lighting conditions, it is a naval tradition none the less.

Sherpa Jones

So... no sickbay either? Just beam back an earlier version that wasn't sick? I think this was covered in Season 2's "Unnatural Selection." The procedure had the transporter system "bypassed like a Christmas tree" to borrow words from Scotty, and there was a high risk of failure, which would have required Picard to beam her atoms across the vacuum of space.

Sherpa Jones

I've watched this one very many times myself.

Jovet

@Greg I agree. It was intentional in order to keep others at a distance. The more she interacted with them in a "cordial" way, the greater chance they picked up on something.

Sherpa Jones

Data's words in his log/narration was that he could only trust that vulcan's do not lie, because he had no intuition to tell him otherwise. Remember too, he did get duped by Tasha's sister a few episodes back. And a Starfleet/Federation ambassador has a LOT of authority in that role. She did give him level 3 clearance codes that he verified. If he believed her to be genuinely testing his security checks, he may have felt that reporting this to the Captain would be inappropriate, as she in some ways out ranks him. Just like Riker outranked Shelby and got heat from Riker for going over his head to Picard with the saucer separation strategy.

Sherpa Jones

@Juan Tutrifor Someone already did in the Patreon Takes.

Jovet

All those questions about Data and how he would marry. I wonder if they will ever be answered.

Scott Reeves

Reality bytes.

Jovet

What a terrible teaser. Ugh.

Jovet

Wish we could see the moment Data met Spot. Could’ve been a good scene.

Lwaxana’s Poolboy

About Data and the night shift: each officer has a 4 hour watch twice a day, on a 3 shift rotation. Riker, Worf, Data are the Sr. officers who command the bridge over these watches. Picard doesn't hold a watch, but traditionally a captain would on a smaller ship. When you see all the Sr. officers on the bridge, it is usually because something critical is happening. And, well every episode is written around a plot where something critical is happening. For normal day to day operations, you probably see all the Sr. officers together on the bridge for brief periods. And there are other officers who are rated as watch officers that can stand in for one of the Sr. officers. This is all based on naval tradition.

Sherpa Jones

I think it's amusing that you think Broccoli has had sex - or are you counting holodeck sex? LOL! Also, I'm pretty sure tthis is Spots's first appearance. Interestingly, when this was brand new, my youngest son Adam (named for the immortal Mr West) who was about 7 at the time, brought home this scrappy stray & insisted on naming him Spot because of Data. Turned out to be a great cat! Had him for about another 8 years before nature took its course.

Owen Madden

Wesley is gone forever... as a regular anyway.

Owen Madden

8:25 I had never noticed the barber pole graphic before!

Jovet

I was under the impression that the ambassador was a long-term mole in Starfleet. I think she'd been in Starfleet for years. But it was a weak storyline.

wildhunt1973

Well this is something that governments actually do. Maybe the background and records are falsified.. or maybe she actually legitimately obtained her ambassadorial job through many years of serving the federation while spying. Ever seen The Departed? Spoilers for The Departed.. Nicholson grooms Damon from childhood to legitimately become a cop. Goes through cop school, legit becomes a high level detective. All while being loyal to and working for the Irish mob his entire life

James Bottas

Being able to make predictions isn't in and of itself a deal breaker for me. It's not that I don't appreciate when a show outsmarts me, in fact I really appreciate when it does, but in general I prefer something predictable that makes sense versus something unpredictable that doesn't. Not being able to predict a show doesn't necessarily mean it's well written either. It's only an issue for me if I predict something that the characters in the show should also have figured out for themselves. If Data is having misgivings about T'Pel based on his brief interactions, it's strange that nobody else suspects a thing before the reveal at the end. I'm not even limiting it to the Enterprise crew. Assuming she was a spy the whole time and not just a recent replacement, did nobody else in Star Fleet ever suspect her including other Vulcans? So it's not outsmarting the show that's the problem here. It's outsmarting typically smart characters.

Paul Noad

Think it’s called a circadian rhythm, it’s how we evolved so guess it makes sense it feels weird

Andrew Duffy

I disagree. I think her acting just like a mean bitch and not really a cold logical Vulcan was 100% intentional. She is a Romulan trying to pretend to be Vulcan. It makes perfect sense for her to be "off" a bit.

Greg Quinn

That was my understanding as well..... which...logically (no Vulcan pun intended) makes no sense. Imagine how hard it would be to create a back story in America for someone from another country and claim they were really born here? Then beyond think about the level of background checks a 24th century federation and Vulcan planet could manage.

Greg Quinn

I agree this episode was everything they were asking for showing the everyday actions and then thy sorta poo poo it, the opening was a transition to day wtch thats why the bridge was different

Scarpad’s Domain

Typically the lights on a night shift are dimmed because it is for human health. Keeps our rhythm regular. In my hospital at least, the ER is the only place we do not dim the lights because of the nature of the work in that department. As for the Romulan spy, I equate her character to Russian spies in the Cold War where they sent people to live as Americans, but work as spies for the Soviet Union. A good dramatized example of this is the TV series 'The Americans'. In that series a man and a woman are coupled together by the Russian government to live as husband and wife in the U.S. and they go as far as having children for their cover. They are given objectives via drop offs to acquire intelligence for the Soviet Union and on occasion sabotage.

Ricky

This was a great Day in the Life Comedic episode, Spiner is so go, and this episode has call backs to MASH as they did these type of episodes the "Dear Dad" episodes all the Time. Plus the actrees that marries the Chief marries Corporal Klinger

Scarpad’s Domain

Personally, I would never criticize that shot of Deanna.

Forbidden Donut

I believe this is exactly right

James Bottas

😆 Our old enemy, Cold War tropes

James Bottas

"He might not be in another episode for like four episodes." Remember that.

Sam Langanke

My understanding has always been that the ambassador was always a spy, who was in deep cover and had been gathering information about the Federation for years. The Enterprise's mission is just a ruse to extract her from the Federation - maybe she was also trying to gather some info on the Enterprise, but I don't think that was the primary mission.

Steven Linden

The sex scoreboard Riker 8 new +1 (edited here pointed out that Riker scored in this ep) Troi 3 Data 1 Picard 1 Worf 1 Jordy 1 & 1 I Broccoli 2 i Chief 1 new +1 Keiko 1 new +1 extras: Although adding 1 for the chief assumes he did have sex. He did just get married after all. (that one is going to come back and bite me in hate mail)

Prof Moff

I understand that perspective but I’ll have to agree to disagree. At the very least if I conceded to that it would be only on the most basic context that essentially anyone in the possible audience of the show would have such as like language or something that fundamental. Not knowledge of how spies work or the giant meme… the Cold War.

Josh (Target Audience)

OMG, Josh's voice over! <3 <3 <3

Ian Westcott

That’s a good point

Josh (Target Audience)

A thought occurred to me watching this one for the umpteenth time. Does Data ever disclose to Picard that the “ambassador” made the request to Data? If I were Picard and I found this out after she had been beamed back to the Warbird and revealed to be a spy I would be furious. Clearly if Picard knew about this conversation it would have raised suspicions. So either Data didn’t report it OR Data did report it and Picard dismissed it. Either way, it makes one or the other (or both) look uncharacteristically like idiots.

Column Meanie

"The ending music is always the same"?! How dare you utter such blasphemy! By the way, I'm very impressed by Alex picking up on the Romulan plot twist! You guys pick up on things I've never noticed before, like the hair coloring in the barber shop or the painting in the background mirror. That's a big part of what makes your reactions special. Also, I never realized how confusing the opening of this episode could be when watching in airdate order. But I agree that calling Data "the father of the bride" is a VERY strange way to phrase things. I kinda thought you'd like this episode even more, since you often mention wanting to see a "day in the life" episode and that's really what this is. And it features O'Brien getting married!

GreenCauldron08

"As we’ve said several times we shouldn’t need the context of things outside of the show to enjoy the show." yes, I know you say that ;p But dude, every piece of media ever created about anything requires context you're expected to have from outside of the thing itself. I just think that when we lack that context it's on us, not the thing. Within reason, of course...

James Bottas

Totally agree with you on the Vulcan ambassador/Romulan spy, Josh. That performance kept it from being an S episode for me.

Collin Freeman

Glad I live 1 minute away from my Domino's. I just pick up. Tried delivery once and it took 45 minutes for something I could have picked up for free in under three minutes.

wildhunt1973

Regarding Data and friends - yes, I think that a lot of his friendships are from circumstance, but as you said, a lot of OUR friendships are those of circumstance. That being said, he specifically said he considered Geordi his "Best Friend" and I think it's because of shared interests and the "ease" of their conversations.

Pokeysaurus

I'll have to give it another watch sometime as I didn't think either of you came off very confused by it during the reaction. Alex even called the twist which can actually be a good sign that something is in fact well constructed,.. but anyway, that isn't the main focus of the episode so at least the episode still hit with you both

James Bottas

Oh yes.

Paul Rymer

I was shocked we didn’t hear the name in this episode. Perhaps this is a different cat?

Paul Rymer

I wonder if this was based on the real case of a woman who lived for decades in London, working in a field related to nuclear weapons, and it was only after she retired that it was revealed she had been a Russian spy all her adult life. She wasn’t as high-profile as an ambassador, but other spies posed as artists and academics who mixed with royalty and politicians.

Paul Rymer

Yup, Gates was a choreographer prior to TNG. I know I saw her name on the credits of Labyrinth. She did all her dancing. Brent did the front body shots and the basic combinations. When it camera cuts away to just show the feet doing advanced stuff, that's the double, and when it goes to the overhead shot when they start doing turns, you can tell by the wig it's the double. Then when it goes into the final shot of them kicking out their legs then it cuts back to Brent. And once I read up on Brent theater/dance experience, I was kinda surprised he opted for a double since he was trained in it. The TNG compendium said he wasn't as confident he could pull it off and have it look/sound good. I kinda don't blame him as those are pretty nice combos and with tap dance every since sound has to sound separate and precise or it's just a mush of sounds.

Firekrys FWO

Who has haircuts when you have transporters, you would just beam yourself back to a 2 week earlier version that had shorter hair.

Alan Thompson

If you think it was executed well in the show that’s fair, but that’s not what you said. You said “this is a thing in real life therefore the show is not weak” As we’ve said several times we shouldn’t need the context of things outside of the show to enjoy the show. Also; we are aware of long-term spies that wasn’t even our complaint. Our complaint was the writing was confusing. Which is fine for you to disagree with but it didn’t have to do with the “believability” of a long term spy. Those obviously exist.

Josh (Target Audience)

Well that's what we disagree on, innit? It was well executed. They can't help that 35 years later you wouldn't know that you're seeing a well executed depiction of spy activities ;) (damn, do I have to make a sign to tap?)

James Bottas

Oh, THAT'S how Data knew Keiko so well.

Nolan

Point of Clarification, T'Pring was Spock's wife-to-be, T'Pau (T'POW) was the Vulcan amdassador in Amok Time.

Nolan

There was a Bolian last season in Allegiance

Josh (Target Audience)

Same reaction for me on Future Imperfect. S tier all the way through at the last 5 minutes is B or C tier, so I give it an A. It may seem petty but I think that the WHOLE episode has to be a banger to be S.

Pokeysaurus

Well lipstick and wigs definitely weren’t the reasons lmao but thank you

Josh (Target Audience)

“This is a thing in real life” Dammit James you made me tap the sign https://imgur.com/a/q1akjNh

Josh (Target Audience)

googled both but couldn't find any resembling chop sticks, but i take your word for it, is her wedding dress at the end a real one as well?

Dark Kronis

Rosalind Chao (Keiko) was one of the final candidates for the role of Tasha Yar.

Paul Rymer

One bite, everyone knows the rules

Juan Tutrífor

Yeah. This is how real world espionage works. Agents infiltrate, establish themselves, ga in trust, and harvest information for years, sometimes decades.

Steven Johnson

To me, the Data/O'Brien stuff is S tier and the ambassador mystery B plot is B tier. There are better ways the whole "let's shut the audience out of what is going on" thing is done in some future stories. Average the two and that is why I also ranked it A. Also, I laughed every time you guys said "kee ko"

THE LORE!!!

It was deliberate, especially the initial shot with the face obscured.

Paul Rymer

Why is Data's cat different every time? HE'S EATING THE CATS!

Juan Tutrífor

You’ll return to this one later and it’ll be an S. I enjoy this episode every time I rewatch it, never gets boring.

Paul Rymer

enjoy your pizza

Josef Nitervol

Yeah it's for the people who work the night shift sometimes, but not all the time. So their bodies stay used to the normal day/night cycle

James Bottas

Ummm. That is an actual style of Japanese hair ornament. Google pictures of Seijin no Hi or Natsu Matsuri and you will see many examples. It is a natural complement to kimono or yukata. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

StealthMomo

Here in Denver, Pizza Hut and Dominos always have the opposite delivery times. Dominos is always fast and Pizza Hut is usually 2-3 hours.

Connor Fallon

Delivery! Delivery!

Matt Newmark

I always forget until I watch it again, but the dance partner the computer conjours for Data bears a resemblence to Tasha Yar. Because of course the computer would remember crew member's preferences. Dang cookies.

Nolan

I just removed the sentence I believe you were referring to.

StealthMomo

Spoiler. Stop it.

Michael Metrick

how do we make keiko Asian? hm let put chop sticks in her hair

Dark Kronis

As someone who did overnight work in offices for years, we always adjusted the lights dimmer at night. It feels really uncomfortable to have things at daylight levels when your body know it's supposed to be darker.

Julie Carter

There's a lot of real life stories of actual spies who stayed undercover for years, in disguise and all. So I don't agree that that was weak at all. It's one of the better "B plots" in the whole series imo (if it even counts as a B plot.. I think the whole episode is just one big A plot). Great episode though, glad you guys enjoyed.

James Bottas

I also noticed this for the first time. I thought it might have been a coincidence, or maybe it was actually the holodeck giving Data a partner of "his type".

Ca$hWednesday

Pretty sure Gates does all her dancing

marty63026

I've been waiting 2 years to watch this episode with you. This is a definite S, you guys. It's everything you've asked for. I'm frankly astonished. I've watched this episode maybe 10, 20 times, and I never noticed lipstick, wigs or other meaningless flotsam. Way too much overthinking. But I still love you guys. Keep up the great work.

Michael Metrick

There was a while in the early 90s where Colm Meaney was the Irish guy in every movie. Even the Irish guy in Irish movies, like The Commitments.

Juan Tutrífor

I figured they dimmed the lights during the night shift on the ship to mimic the day night cycle on earth that the crew would be used to. I know i'd hate to be in an environment where it is daytime all the time.

Ca$hWednesday

Absolutely not 🙃

Darren Seal

I can’t speak for them, but as someone who likes their pizza well done, I usually choose the “deliver at later time” over the “ASAP” option. If they know in advance what’s wanted and when to have it ready for, there’s less chance of them doing a rush that carbons the outside but undercooks things like the bacon strips/etc. Better they cook it right then rush making my meal to stay under some “30 or 40 minutes or it’s free” deadline. 🤷‍♂️

Todd “Canuck” Schmuck

Perhaps Q is a mystery. Perhaps his episodes don't always have "Q" in the title. Now you're dodging mines in an empty field. Or is it empty?

Juan Tutrífor

This is the first time I've ever considered how much Data's virtual dance partner looks like Tasha

Julie Carter

My soft-pilot for any non-Trek friends. Maybe my all-time favorite single TNG episode.

StonyD

A species last seen in conspiracy

Thicketdweller

Brent Spiner said the most difficult cast member he had to work with in the series: Was the cats! Yes, there were multiple critters used

Thicketdweller

It’s weird, at times Spock looks like Sarek. Alex is in need a the Picard Maneuver

marty63026

Fun fact: the barber is a Bolian. A race named for Cliff Bole

Phil Ken Sebben

It's a A+ The dude gets the boutonniere, and the Ladies get the Corsage echhh echh Florist here

Josef Nitervol

Wow, I had this an an S for you guys

Phil Ken Sebben

The DATA'S DAY Josh joke at the begining of the dicussion.... chef's kiss.

Colm was filming three different movies during the early part of the season. Die Hard 2, Dick Tracy, and Come See the Paradise. Gates McFadden has an extensive background in dance. In the 70s she taught dance and choreography at the University of Pittsburg, Harvard, and George Washington University. In the 80s she worked at the Jim Henson Company as Director of Choreography for Labyrinth, The Muppets Take Manhattan, and Dreamchild. An interesting side note: Brent Spiner is the godfather of her son.

StealthMomo

Josh, Alex. Trust me you’re definitely missing things, Only time will tell

Thicketdweller

Don't spoil the name!

Juan Tutrífor

Oh a lovely episode, with the introduction of the greatest supporting character - Data’s cat.

Darren Seal

Robot Chicken had a gag called "Star Trek Night Crew" that jokingly established that there was a whole other bridge crew who manned the bridge from 11pm to 7am. It was pretty funny and had Patrick Stewart doing the voice of Picard and Chris Pine doing the voice of the "alternate Captain."

Darin Wagner

I really like the slice of life Star Trek episode. It's really the first time we just follow a "regular" day on the Enterprise. Some people hate slice-of-life, but if the characters are good, I'm a big fan

Deep Red

This is a solid episode. The next one is the one i'm excited for though. Yes, indeed.

Steven Johnson

Kirk (Kirok) married Miramanee in "The Paradise Syndrome". Not a great episode but he did get married.

KatWithAttitude

I did S tier this. Not just for the Data focus, but for all the little mundane everyday stuff we see. The barbershop, the dancing doctor, calling Geordi a lunkhead all those little things, Worf picking out a gift..even the wedding itself. I love that stuff as it just breathes so much life into the ship and crew itself and grounds it so much more than a traditional episode. I almost only gave this an A as well mostly because I think the B plot with the ambassador kind of falls flat and doesn't really add much. Other than the little bit of narration from Data. The wrestling wedding gag cracked me up too. Romulan HHH shows up on the vid screen with Keiko going through an interstellar drive through chapel o' love lol Screw you Tes... I mean Obrien! See you at "Hell. In. A. Neutral Zone."

s0rd3z

Great Reaction you lunkheads

Randy Benton

"We're going eco-friendly by having our drivers walk your fuckin pizza to your house."

Juan Tutrífor

Spock on that shirt looks like a very serious Sloth from the Goonies.

Juan Tutrífor

That's something I never thought about. They have a holodeck, so the wedding could be held ANYWHERE... but O'Brien and Keiko get married at the bar.

Juan Tutrífor

Well of course there is, but the closest Little Caesar’s doesn’t deliver to my house.

Josh (Target Audience)

There must be better pizza choices in your area

Josef Nitervol

The Dancing Doctor and Tap Dancing Data!!! (Although he did have a double for some shots.) At the time this aired, I had just moved away from several years of competition dance as a kid, which included tap dancing, so I thoroughly enjoyed that scene. I really like this episode. It's a light episode and even though there's not much of a plot and it's a 'Day in the Life' type of episode, since it's Data that made it more fun.

Firekrys FWO

Aren’t we lucky that Data didn’t ask her to teach him how to Riverdance?!!

Thicketdweller

Hey Alex, adjust your shirt so Spock stops making that creepy face. Try the "Alex Maneuver".

Stardate 1312.4

Waitaminute 2 hours for delivery? Holy shit.

Steven Johnson

Let’s go!
