UNCUT - Remember Me (TNG S4E5) | Star Trek Journey 186

UNCUT - Remember Me (TNG S4E5) | Star Trek Journey 186

Comments

I loved this one first time seeing it growing up, i never thought that Bev was trapped inside another dimension until Worf vanished then i was like yeah that's not normal haha, great to see the Traveller return again.

The Darkside Gamer

Not if you include the full watch-through they do before starting the cameras 😉

Dan Halstead

I mean I like Bev and Gates, but she's hardly an Outstanding actress, she got better as the series went on, but IMHO she's serviceble

Scarpad’s Domain

I love that this is your favorite episode so far, Not because this is my favorite episode, but because it once again demonstrates that your opinions and reactions are genuine. The Star Trek landscape has always been great because of its diversity of thought. Can’t wait for you guys to see episode 7 and 12, those are my favorite. Keep up the good work.

Just another Red Shirt

“Wesley, just close your eyes and let go” yeah. Has perv vibes. Kind of hilarious in a weird way. I mean, his hands…his fingers….I dont want to even think about it. 😂

Chris S.

Sorry. I didn't say it was bad. Just doesn't strike like it does the guys, it seems.

Aaron Wells

Interesting all the creeper comments about the Traveler but no one comments on the way Beverly holds Wesley around the waist and it almost looks like they are going to make-out. She probably bought him a tshirt that says “my mom’s a MILF”. Save room for Jesus you two!

Column Meanie

Really? Did he grope Wesley? Jesus.

Column Meanie

@Derek Oor When your society was built on a Puritanical foundation, it unnecessarily leads to a lot of baseless accusations of perversion.

Column Meanie

Some of the best episodes of the series are bottle episodes, so I’m not sure why that’s relevant.

Column Meanie

I know you didn't. 🙂 I just like pointing out how well I believe that this was written!

Jovet

The intro to that video is, unfortunately, pretty spoilery. 🤦

Jovet

@Timothy Nikiforovs Yeah, The Traveler is weird. He's supposed to be a weird. He's an unusual, mysterious alien species. "Weird" is NOT synonymous with creepy, nor is it automatically bad.

Jovet

I knew that you guys were going to like this episode. It's not necessarily one of the classic fan favorites, and I've even seen several reactions where they give this episode negative reviews (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXPagZ-PDs8). But watching your guys reactions and listening to your commentary over the years, I predicted way back in Season 2 that you guys were going to enjoy this one. Coincidentally, it's also my mom's favorite episodes. While not my personal favorite from this season, it's definitely in my top 5 and one that I always enjoy watching.

Bryce Ronee

Oh for sure, I didn't say she didn't. But she was definitely still horrified

E Parhas

Ever since I watched this show as a little girl Dr Crusher was my fav. It always frustrats me rewatching the show as an adult because the writers could have done so much with her and I feel like we never got much development. The female characters on DS9 got so much more.

Lisa Tully

Alex and Josh… as you can see so far from season four, the episodes are obviously going to be more character oriented, then plot oriented from seasons, one and two. But what you’re going to probably find is that each episode focuses on a main character. For example “this is going to be a data episode“ or “this is going to be a Picard’s episode” etc. So a lot of the time, you’re going to find that each episode usually will focus on one main character. Not every single time but a majority of them. And that’s probably what you’re going to see for the most part moving forward. That’s what sets season three and especially season four and beyond above the earlier seasons.

Chris S.

But she still strived to maintain rationality and critical thinking to try and help herself.

Jovet

In my younger days (I was a teen when these episodes were coming out) I didn't appreciate her nearly as much as I do now.

Max Yoder

I love these kinds of episodes where one of the characters feels like they're going crazy. There's usually a few of them in each Trek series. They did a great job holding back on the reveal so the audience isn't ahead of the characters. I always used to get confused about what was actually happening. I used to think it was a duplicate universe and people were getting sucked into those vortexes and the universe was "resetting" each time someone ceases to exist. Yeah the episode explains that she created the universe with her own thoughts, but I guess I just never processed how that could work as a kid. But yeah, these eps that just mess with you psychologically are always a fun time. Great episode.

Timothy Nikiforovs

I 💗💗💗💗💗 that you guys enjoyed this one. It reminds me of when I had to negotiate the remote to watch this weekly and it just being so awesome to watch. Also, you mentioned you watched the next (and the FREAKIN CAN'T WAIT one after) but Data's explanation of friendship lives rent free in my head. 🖖

A G

That's much better. Because that's what we think is happening. The summary I got was off of cable when I saw it airing randomly, on BBC America, I think. I've been following along on Paramount Plus (no ads; on Prime I have to deal with syncing it up again after ad breaks) and the description on there is pretty benign too. (It doesn't mention Wesley's experiment, just people disappearing.)

John

No need to feel guilty about anything. There may be some answers difficult to digest, but there are no WRONG answers.

Jovet

stressed out in the moment, she phrased it for effect without thinking about whether it was technically correct.............the best kind of correct

Timothy Nikiforovs

Amazon's description is better that way. It reads "Wesley's experiment with warp fields result in the mysterious disappearance of the crew."

Timothy Nikiforovs

Yeah that's a completely different scenario. I would say the "pedo vibe" has become a lot more pronounced in recent years, but even as a kid in the 90s, I found the guy pretty weird. I've certainly heard the pedo description for over a decade, but even if you don't go that far, he's a pretty weird guy.

Timothy Nikiforovs

I've always loved this episode but it freaked me out so much as a kid. Gates did a great job of portraying how horrified and unnerved Beverly was becoming. Seriously imagine the horror of everyone you know slowly disappearing and then literally the whole universe eventually vanishing bit by bit and you have no idea why; such an actual nightmare, it gives me shivers

E Parhas

"If there's nothing wrong with me, maybe there's something wrong with the universe." --Beverly Crusher (and she was actually completely right lol)

E Parhas

Yes the Traveler and Quaice. Picard even glanced over at the Traveler when he answered her.

tyranusfan

A while back I looked through all the upcoming episodes, and thought to myself, "they will hate this one, oooo they will LOVE this one." I for sure knew this would be a new favorite, since it has everything you guys love. An interesting mystery that isnt spoiled for us right away, AND it's a Crusher episode. I do have one nitpick for your memories. The first time the vortex appears is when she is in sickbay talking to the computer.

Clyde Frog

Holy shit!! After seeing how much you guys loved this episode, I feel GUILTY for giving it a B-Tier rating!! I have always loved this episode and it’s Twilight Zone-esque quality, but it just never felt important enough to me! There’s a similar premise done better in my opinion in Season 7 (you TNG fans out there know which one I’m referring to)! I rated this episode B for “Banger”, so upon reflection, an A would have been more appropriate! Glad you guys enjoyed it as much as you did! 🖖

Raphael Gaytan

NO! Season 10 :p :)

PIG

I would consider BAD episodes D. This one is just meh. Bottle episode meant to save on budget.

Aaron Wells

Damn I knew you guys would love this one but I didn't know you would LOVE this one

Strife

I cant wait to see everyones reactions and conspiracies and weird jokes etc to a healthy father and son relationship when they get to a certain future star trek series and see a starfleet officer hugging and touching his son and saying he loves him 🤷‍♂️🙄

Derek Orr

Jesus you people are creepy and weird. You people will freak out in later star trek shows with a certain warm and loving relationship between a father and son. 🙄

Derek Orr

Could simply mean she knows Selar has not physically left the ship for shoreleave or whatever for a few months, but has been posted to the Enterprise for years

Derek Orr

Jerry: "This is like that Twilight Zone where the guy wakes up, and he's the same - but everybody's different!" Kramer: "Which one?" Jerry: "They were all like that!"

Joe Concepts

Umm nope, literally never heard anyone say that or imply that since I first watch the episode air …until this reaction and comment thread

Derek Orr

Agreed. Its a bizarre retroactive reinterpretation based on peoples bizarre obsession with pedo accusations and conspiracies etc. Yes of course that horrible stuff exists but its this weird online non evidence based thing that crimes like that are common or something …and it certainly wasn’t written into TNG

Derek Orr

Interesting that this is second reaction channel I've seen where they rave about Gates McFadden and Crusher. While I find her perfectly fine, she was never at the top of my list of the TNG actors. Go figure. Maybe part of it was just she doesn't any where near as much to do as the other characters, usually.

Joe Concepts

Because he put his hand on wesleys arm in an important intense moment about the fate of his mother?

Derek Orr

Yeah, the reason I asked was I’ve noticed a couple of times that you are in different clothes for the discussion than you are for the reaction but you have never mentioned re-watching the episode before the discussion until this one

marty63026

You consider forgettable episodes B? Interesting. That would probably be D for us

Josh (Target Audience)

I believe this is the first time we waited to do the discussion specifically to watch the episode again. There’s been other times we don’t do the discussion same day but that is usually due to scheduling

Josh (Target Audience)

Is this the first time you have rewatched an episode before doing the discussion? I know you’ve rewatched and had new discussions on a few TOS Episodes but that was later on after you got roast for not loving Balance of Terror…

marty63026

Or 19, damn too many excellent episodes!!

marty63026

I predict that episode 14 will be the new favorite 😁 But episode 23 might be a contender too, shhh no spoilers

marty63026

Season 7 episode 14 for sure 😂

marty63026

Yeah I noticed that too, Beverly asks Data how many people are on board and he says ‘114’ and Beverly says ‘now there are OVER 900 people missing. At the end when the total number of people was mentioned, they say 1014, so either way it’s a Continuity error. I’m not sure that number Quice or the traveler.

marty63026

I wasn’t trying to “Well actually” anyone btw

marty63026

Actually, that makes a lot of sense to me that Wesley was able to sort of create this warp bubble. He didn’t quite work, right that’s why I say sort of. In where no one has gone before, the traveler tells Picard that Wesley is like Mozart, but with science, not music. Knowing what is to come, no spoilers, it really does make sense that he could inadvertently open a warp bubble dimension. And if Beverly Hatten thought it, Wesley and Jordi would have been successful in retrieving her from the warp bubble, it was Wesley‘s lack of experience that prevented him from realizing they needed to return to Starbase in order to reconnect to the warp bubble.

marty63026

There’s reading required? I’m out 😂

marty63026

Alex and Josh have helped me look at the show in a fresh way. It’s way better (and sometimes worse) than I remember. Always loved it, just a fresh perspective

marty63026

So I have been tier listing these episodes from memory, I watch the episodes with Alex and Josh. I rated this as B but after rewatching it it’s at least an A tier episode

marty63026

Someone did give them one. They just havent done the reading lol

Aaron Wells

Wow. You guys really liked this one. I would call it a solid B. A forgettable episode.

Aaron Wells

Picard: Did you find anything that might suggest why you’re apparently the only one among us affected by this phenomenon? Beverly: No. I’ll talk to Troi. Picard: What’s a Troi?

Michael Figueroa

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled. I just invent, then wait until man comes around to needing what I've invented. - Arthur C. Clarke

Michael Figueroa

Traveler is a bit touchy feely. I would've spoken to someone in HR.

Michael Figueroa

Definitely unintentional but as long as he has been around that is the joke made about him

Phil Ken Sebben

Loved the discussion. So happy to see you guys found a new favorite episode!

Captain Proton

Yes, very few "S"es... this is an "A" at best. An "S" is coming next week!

Jovet

I know which the other one is. 😏

Jovet

There are no "pedo vibes" in TNG. I believe such statements say more about the stater than the show.

Jovet

I don't particularly care for "Wonderchild Wesley" either, the "phasing like The Traveller" bit makes me roll my eyes, too. But I still think the story is excellent.

Jovet

None of them are human members of Star Fleet. And none of them did the “Stand there and think so hard oh try harder until you get your solution climax” of the show. Boring ass resolution.

Aramis Calcutt

I was really looking forward to this one, glad to see how much you guys loved it!

Doug

It’s amazing how many future episodes are going to be your favourite of all time as well!

Jonathan Llyr

Crusher is talking about several members of her staff at the same time. I assume "they've been on board for months" just means they've all been on board at least that long, even though Selar specifically has been there for years.

Jeff Cornell

A little early for halloween??? homophobic

llama

ok. I'm betting you guys are gonna love episode 18 of this season.

Tye W

This was my sister's favorite episode when we were kids, and I've always loved it too.

Steven Linden

"If there's nothing wrong with me... maybe there's something wrong with the universe" is a quote I use pretty often.

Steven Linden

Your saying the character of the traveller was written to have pedo vibes? Please tell me what scene or dialogue identities this?

Derek Orr

How was he creepy?

Derek Orr

Wtf ?

Derek Orr

Is Q magic? Trelane? Apollo from TOS?

Derek Orr

This is NOT a new thing, that has been the connotation to the character the entire time

Phil Ken Sebben

No one thought anything like that when this aired. These days its like everyone in America is always talking about pedo vibes in everything. 🤷‍♂️

Derek Orr

Jesus Americans seem to talk about that stuff more and more. Weird 🤷‍♂️

Derek Orr

I will agree thou its is probably one of the best Beverly Centric episodes

Scarpad’s Domain

It's a good episode but I Lean More like A+ its not S Tier

Scarpad’s Domain

🎶 Flying high on a wing and a prayer.🎶 theme song.

Philbot

I can’t wait for the next episode because of reasons. 🤨

Philbot

They say something about Dr. Selar being aboard for months? We kind of assume she’s always been there, but maybe she’s come and gone onto other assignments in the last 2 years??

Philbot

This has always been one of my favorite episodes. Of course, this is Season 4, there are PLENTY MORE coming up, this is a very representative sample of what you can expect through to the end of the show. They've nailed the formula and mastered the craft.

Angelaina Marie

I've always loved this episode- the idea of the universe gaslighting you as a metaphor for losing people in your life has stuck with me. That and of course Crusher being lead and solving mysteries is always fun!

Nathan Koga

"Wesley, just grab my thigh, squeeze, and concentrate. Close your eyes. Yes. Now focus." "How does this help?" "Do you love your mother?" "Yes." "Then squeeze and concentrate." (sorry, couldn't help it lol)

PIG

My two favorite STNG episodes are Crusher episodes. This is one of them!

PIG

I like this episode better than I remembered liking it.... But not in my top 5 for the series but maybe it makes my top 5 for the season. But not surprised you guys liked it this much.

Greg Quinn

In fairness..he is 18 now

Greg Quinn

By "NAILS IT!" do you mean Capt. Picard?

Jovet

Which one? 😝 Capt. Oveur is trying to be his inexperienced vision of a good "father figure" by explaining to Joey truths of life, such as the Birds and the Bees. The Traveller just sounds dim, with his slow talk and odd monster hands.

Jovet

*the Observation Lounge They already have all the specs and diagrams at home !

Jovet

Its the traveller stuff that holds it back from an S for me. I don't mind metaphysical stuff but for some reason it just doesn't feel all that necessary. I think I would of preferred Wesley & Geordie figuring it out themselves perhaps. Still a favorite and highly ranked.

s0rd3z

The first "vortex" was in sick bay. The second was on the bridge. The third in engineering.

Jovet

🤦

Jovet

Downgraded from Pedo to Groomer 💀

Josh (Target Audience)

Nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking, when she says at the end 1,014 people on board is exactly the right number, did that number include The Traveller, or does he just not show up on scans?

Ee'char

MmmmMM that's some good Star Trek

James Bottas

Interesting choice for a favorite episode. But with your love of The Twilight Zone understandable.

Sam Langanke

Someone get them a technical manual!

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Wesley is 18 in this episode so can finally consent -- meaning this isn't creepy anymore right? Right?

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

This episode always did feel special to me. It's almost like it's its own thing. It's one of my favorites as well, but mainly because it's actually one of the first TNG episodes I ever saw as a kid. There are a lot of episodes that are objectively better which is why the community doesn't give it an S, but it is one of the more unique ones of the series, and it just so happened to check off everything that you like at the same time. I think this episode will be your guy's "The Bonding" of season 4. There's going to be other episodes that you'll love, and might come pretty close, but for different reasons. This one is a pretty unique mix.

BN13

Oooo, I liked this one. Gates McFadden did a great job.

Firekrys FWO

So glad you guys enjoyed this episode so much! I loved it when I was a kid, and still love it just as much now. The premise is just so creative and compelling, and it's so nice to see how smart and capable and caring Dr. Crusher is, even when she is not involved in anything medical at all. Gates McFadden really sells it with her acting as well. I also appreciate the fact that while everyone is willing to help, at the end of the day, Beverly has to solve her own problem. No one just tells her what is going on, or brings her back, she figures it out and has to save herself, which is why the third vortex does not pull her in like the previous two. She has to choose to move on from past loss towards the people she loves, to appreciate them while she can, a sentiment Dr. Quaice advocated at the beginning of the episode. S-tier for me, all the way.

Ryan Caulfield

This is one of my favourite TNG episodes; and both the reaction and discussion here did it more than justice. Even the segmented structure worked a lot better here than in the season's early episodes. The high regard for this episode bodes well for quite a few ones to come on TNG as well as DS9 and Voyager.

DG

The brief synopsis of this episode ruins the whole mystery (it tells you that it's Crusher who is trapped in another reality and the crew has to figure out a way to get her out, which you don't find out until 30 minutes into the episode), so it's a good thing you don't read those.

John

Absolute pedo vibes from the traveler

Phil Ken Sebben

Ah the ultimate Beverly Episode and one of my faves of the season, I’m a bit ambivalent on the resolution but the journey to it is superb

Darren Seal

This is a great episode, to be sure. Star Trek as a whole doesn't do many of those episodes where you get that Twilight Zone vibe, but this one, and some upcoming ones do touch that sensation. There's some more excellent episodes coming up here really soon.

Steven Johnson

Thing is everyone going to have their favorites. It's a Twight Zone type of episode. The Twight Zone is the greatest show of all time. Why? name another show that has guest main characters for every episode. The stories the acting everything about it. You want to learn how to curse without cursing watch Uncle Simon and the adjectives they throw at each other. I'm done.

Josef Nitervol

Yes! I have always loved this episode, not my favorite but very underrated appreciated.

John Rose

I gotta say, I don't like this episode. The setup and the dilemma is interesting, but in my view the resolution is garbage. The solution to the problem is that Wesley must use his Jedi mind powers? WTF? That's not a Star Trek sfory. That's magic. To me, everything after the point that it was revealed that it was really Beverly who disappeared is boring AF.

Aramis Calcutt

The large windows you see behind the bridge in the intro are the ones in the conference room.

Gruzz

This is the perfect bottle episode. Or should I say "bubble" episode. And it uses all of the strengths of Star Trek. It's actually a sci-fi premise, but also kind of a horror premise. And it leverages the connections that we've made with all of the characters so far to generate tension.

Deep Red

Love this episode! Gates McFadden's performance is wonderful - love episodes that have Dr. Beverly as the focus. The Traveler is pretty silly but I suppose they wanted to have a bigger punch to the resolution than just Geordi+Wesley making a vortex/portal to rescue her.

Kristina Weber

I'm glad i'm not the only one who thought that guy was creepy as fuck.

Spencer Loften

Do you like gladiator movies?

Dmitriy.0

Have you ever been to a Turkish prison?

Matt Newmark

Traveller: Ever been inside a static warp bubble, Wesley? Wes: No sir Traveller : You ever seen a grown man naked, Wesley?

Chris

I don’t think the situation would’ve worked as well with any other main character

Josh (Target Audience)

Glad you loved it, although I'm a bit surprised at how much. Do you think you would have loved it as much if Beverly hadn't been the focus?

KatWithAttitude

53:00 Yes, by the time they re-reveal the real ship, it's already really obvious that something is very wrong with Beverly's perspective. It wasn't "ruined" too soon.

Jovet

I definitely expected you guys to like it, but you liked it even beyond what I thought you would. It's a great mystery episode for sure!

Paul

45:55 S and S?!? And near-immediate rewatch??? Oh my!!!

Jovet

Bold prediction: You might like season 4 even more than season 3 by the end.

EnigmaticPenguin

Even though it’s one of the punchlines of the episode, Beverly and Picard traveling the galaxy alone in the flagship of the federation is a spinoff I wouldn’t mind seeing. And goes without saying, Gates NAILS IT!

Glenn Johnson Barnes

I am so glad you loved this one. It often gets overlooked but it's one of my top ten TNG episodes.

Linda Thackeray

Appreciate it!

Josh (Target Audience)

Stunned and delighted by Josh's reaction!! One of my favs from S4. Some fun trivia, Eric Menyuk (the traveller) made the shortlist of actors to play Data, before Brent Spiner was eventually cast. Also, Gates McFadden was visiibly pregenant at the time this was being recorded. Many scenes show her with her flowy blue doctor's jacket to hide the bump!

Daragh Graham

10:00 Very good, Josh. Very astute!!

Jovet

8:08 I never noticed that when Worf inquires to the computer where Dr. Quaice is, the computer doesn't give the error sound like it did for Beverly.

Jovet

I can't wait to get home from work for this reaction.

THE Fans

I normally don't care about "Drama", but these little one-offs you guys are doing before the episode number comes up are...for me...syncing up the tone perfectly. I suggest sticking to this format, as it's "intro", it's quick, it's usually funny/amusing/interesting/WTF are you doing, and it's a nice ice-breaker for new viewers. No, don't look at the cam--
