UNCUT - MASTERS OF HORROR: John Carpenter's Cigarette Burns (2005)

Comments

The Outer Limits from the late 90s is AMAZING television for the most part. There are some definite WOW guest/early career appearances in those episodes.

Matt Newmark

Poltergeist, if you haven't seen it, or Creepshow.

Rogerbear60

Checking out some Outer Limits soon!

Josh (Target Audience)

This episode of MoH is okay. But just okay. There's a definite feeling like this was a spin on the same story as In the Mouth of Madness, and it has a bleak ending (which to me is a plus with a horror movie). But it's a workmanlike effort by Carpenter, an okay performance by Norman Reedus (and man did he get better over time), and a kind of drawn out and bland script. There's a lot of unanswered questions, but I can't really muster up the effort to care much. It was entertaining to watch it again along with you guys, though! Anyway, hope we see some more MoH and TFtC. You might consider checking out some of the 90's Twilight Zone and Outer Limits episodes too. There was a sort of second golden age of TV horror and sci-fi in the 90's what with the various Star Trek series, and those anthology series were (IMO) standouts.

Paul O'Neal

Yeah, Dreams in the Witch House is easily one of the best MoH episodes IMO. But I'm a sucker for a good Lovecraft adaptation.

Paul O'Neal

Alex, I know you like "The Thing". Have you seen the documentary on the making? It's called "Terror Takes Shape". Carpenter and crew go into some cool details. It's about 1.5 hrs I think. Highly recommended. Carpenter tells a story about the first time he saw "The Thing From Another World" (1951) which is also highly recommended.

Good grief, is really this where the channel is going?

Alan Thompson

They're free on the Roku channel.

Michael Figueroa

BSG Season 2 is better

M Palmiere

Yeah each episode of this anthology series from 2005 to 2006 or so has a horror director doing a single hour of television style horror even a good director didn't always work with this format well

Loki Incredible

There are so many amazing old monster shows tales from the crypt Friday the 13th all those horror anthologies like MONSTERS they're not all good but they are all amazing

Loki Incredible

We will get to more Crypt as well as MOH. Going to be fun jumping all around the genre! Any recommendations welcome!

Josh (Target Audience)

He, Steven Weber, also appeared in a great Crypt episode called "Mournin' Mess." And Wings is the shit of 90s comedies.

Michael Figueroa

Although I really like Tales from the Crypt, I'm glad that you're watching MOH. They are next level. I haven't watched this particular episode. But the ones I'd recommend are episode 1 "Incident...", "Dreams in the Witch House" and "Sick Girl".

Michael Figueroa

I've never even heard of this before.

I love John Carpenter, but I have to admit this is not his best work. I never noticed it said 2005 on this. I agree with Alex, it seems like it's from the 70's, and a rough draft of "Mouth of Madness". Still cool checking out Carpenter with you guys. I recommend any of his stuff. Cant wait for "They Live".

Hey this may be good to let people know (especially if you do more from this Masters of Horror collection).. looks like you can rent or buy them all on Xbox (and presumably Playstation. If one console has it the other surely does too).. digital option with no ads

James Bottas

Oh! It is the same guy, I thought it was the other one :3

Dog Soldiers

James Knight

Steven Weber has a damn good agent

Josh (Target Audience)

(maybe because some of the best horror also has incredible comedy elements)

Loki Incredible

I believe I watched a good amount of it in my childhood but don’t remember much

Josh (Target Audience)

I almost mentioned it because it's the OTHER guy from wings, two actors played two brothers who owned the business and one of them is in The shining remake and the other one is in Jenifer, lmao I love character actor spotting in horror movies especially if it crosses over with comedy

Loki Incredible

Have you guys seen the 90’s version of the miniseries “The Stand”? It’s based on a Stephen King book and is apocalyptic horror-esque. I’ve always enjoyed it and would recommend it.

Connor Fallon

That reminds me of the TV version of The Shining (has the guy from Wings in it lol)... but King preferred it to Kubrick's movie. I hope you guys can do that at some point and compare. I commented about it back when we watched Shining

James Bottas

Oooh man, that's good to hear! I hope you can get to both 🙏

James Bottas

We have not!

Josh (Target Audience)

Oh yeah it was the guy from Wings hahah

Josh (Target Audience)

I highly recommend John Carpenter's Vampires. Maybe you guys wouldn't back to back the same director but it's a very underrated vampire flick. Also, have either of you seen 30 Days of Night??

James Bottas

Love the Masters of Horror series, the black cat with Jeffrey Combs as Edgar Allan Poe, Jenifer with the guy from wings, dreams in the witch house with that guy named Ezra that just looks like a young Jeffrey Combs-- In fact if you love blood and guts look up every '80s horror movie that Jeffrey Combs was in-- Fall in love with him now or later because he will become a character actor in Star Trek but instead of being cast as riker he ended up in a bunch of B movies and TV camoes instead
