More measure of a man. And yes find and play if possible the original actor!!

Zee Doctere

Varyia had great execution! 😂

Philbot

You guys have to find the video of the original actor cast as Fajo before Rubinek on YouTube. Just for comparison..

I guess it depends on how technical you want to get. He didn't specifically omit anything. The phaser fired after transport had begun. Technically, something happening during transport didn't really omit anything in particular. He didn't pull the trigger until after he was already dematerializing... So technically the weapon never discharged... O'Brian canceled it all out in the data stream... Weapon had not fired before the transport, and was disabled before rematerializing. So in a technical sense it never really happened. Splitting hairs I know, but the relative "non-existence" of transport creates a window...

I remember watching The Most Toys back when it first aired. It's always been one of those episodes that's stuck in my memory after all these years. I was a little disappointed that it missed the mark for you both, but to each his own. Regarding Saul Rubio, he was one of the main characters in a show that ran on SyFy for several years - Warehouse 13. It was a pretty good show - a kind of monster of the week premise. Unfortunately, I thought it veered off badly with the final handful of episodes in it's final season, but a good show otherwise.

Yep! By onfuscating the truth when you know what that truth is, you are lying. Data: Yes sir, Fajo was planning to continue to torture, murder, and hold people captive. I was morally obligated to stop him - by any means nessacary. That would have been the honest answer. "Perhaps something happened" is hiding the fact that Data aimed and fired.

I think The Most Toys had great execution. Just ask Data.

vasili1097 .

He’s top 3 Star Trek character of all time

Steve the greeeen hand

Idk but I liked that he did cause no one would have understood what he went through . Well … some . I see that as one of his first biggest human emotion and action

I think it was just a way to signal Data has autonomy and agency that goes beyond any Asimov's law crap. He's capable of making moral judgements and that includes lethal force as a military officer. Was it ham fisted in the execution of the episode? Absolutely, but it's remained a talking point for frigging decades, that counts for something.

Lincynity

all i know is this episode has been unforgettable for me 34 years later for the acting and the writing. may everyone recall something artistic so singularly for that long.

Counselor Worf thinks everyone should shut the fuck up and get back to work. I concur.

Data's "lie" is an artifact of the episode's uneven and unpolished writing. It's a trope meant to cap the impression that Data killing Fajo would have been ... out of character, controversial, an act of vengeance, whatever. Data isn't subject to Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics. Killing Fajo is completely justified based on what's presented; it can be a coldly logical act. Fajo is a sadistic killer promising to continue to imprison, abuse, and kill others. No emotion is needed to make the decision to kill him. Data's self-interest and drive to defend others obligate him to take action. The scene implying that Data took a controversial action and lied to cover it up was unearned, like a standard bit of dialogue tacked on at the end ... a point in the plot outline that was, in the final script, unsupported. Now, if Data went to Fajo's cell at the end, and produced a weapon and fried him to get revenge on a now defenseless captive that was no longer a danger to others, THAT would have justified the inclusion of a cover up! But ... this script didn't have the spine or imagination (or permission?) to go there.

"... something like my finger yanking the trigger!"

J Potter

It was a lie of omission. That's still a lie.

Lincynity

He didn't lie. He speculated in the most general sense possible.

“The chief said the weapon was in a state of discharge.” “Perhaps something happened during transport.”
