UNCUT REACTION - Battlestar Galactica S1E9 - Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down

UNCUT REACTION - Battlestar Galactica S1E9 - Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down

Comments

There are 12 cylon models. How many can we identify To me this is the end of the placing of the pieces the board is now set and the show begins. More hits than misses from here on.

Thicketdweller

Flesh and bone, and six degrees, are two of my least favorite episodes this is one is better but these three always take forever to get through especially since the appear to have little to no meaning other to say humans suck.

Thicketdweller

...And her blood-alcohol level is so high, if she had a xenomorph baby chest-burster, it would come out like the one in Spaceballs... Thx. BTW That was the best comment in the thread. IMO

MertzRocks

@AzoriusMage LOL is all I'll say bc spoilers!

MertzRocks

Saul is probably my favorite character and that helped make this episode for me. And I really like how worried Adama was bringing Ellen aboard and knowing the danger she could present, especially in the current circumstances. Adama/Saul friendship is one of the greatest parts of this series for me.

Rod Gallow

Its wild to me how much they liked the writing and directing this episode

Derek Orr

I certainly agree about the repetition of Alex hating Roslin. But OMG Olmos was not a good director. This was the worst of the entire series

Derek Orr

Flesh and bone is way more powerful and deals with important issues, terrorism and torture and religion and extremely important character development.

Derek Orr

Its corny and out of place for what’s going on. And awkward directing at times.

Derek Orr

Ugh the horrible sit com attempt episode and Adama’s first time directing 🤦‍♂️

Derek Orr

Oh god, they actually liked this one? This is the worst episode of the whole series 🤦‍♂️

Derek Orr

Yeah, I loved this episode. If your entire series is just downers, you’re not gonna have a good time. Well directed, funny, and expositional. I feel like you guys are just getting through the exposition, and D. Moore did a really good job up to this point laying this crazy huge foundation. I’m *so* pumped ya’ll are watching BSG. I’ve had a rough go of it (as have so many of us) as of late, and you guys watching my favorite shows is just a constant, guaranteed little nugget of fun, well thought out reactions. Thanks.

Jess Thomas

She is like a poor mans Six

AzoriusMage

Fair enough! But I would expect people will keep "doing this to themselves." Words have meaning man, idk what to tell you. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Dor

I'm so sorry.

Nolan

Literally everything anyone says about any media ever is their opinion. Anyone assuming we think what we say is fact is doing that to themselves.

Josh (Target Audience)

Okay, well, I have no idea how to predict your reactions. Keeps things interesting! :D Last week I was surprised how much you disliked what feels like to me a perfectly fine episode. I was surprised earlier in the season when you were meh about the first episode, which I've always thought was fantastic. Your comment about 'Just wanted a well made show, and this is where it finally hit" is so different from my perspective it feels like it is coming from Mars, haha. IMO the series starts off strong, and this episode? Yeeeesh. This episode feels like by far the weakest of the season to me. I've always seen EJO's direction here really off the mark. I love Arrested Development, but the farcical scenes don't work here for me at all. All three characters on screen pausing simultaneously while putting the dishes away after dinner? Adama and Tigh turning to Roslin in unison? I feel like I stumbled out of BSG and onto the set of 'Noises Off.' WAY too cheesy. And the line delivery you almost cheered at, Adama to Tigh "That, and because we're friends." is *maybe* the most unconvincing line delivery from Adama in the entire series. Not saying you're wrong! Enjoy what you like! But your comment on "We just like shows that are made well, is all." is exactly what I was talking about when I said stating opinions as fact is what gets you in trouble with viewers because, uh, your perspective on what well-made means is *very much* a matter of opinion, haha. We also like shows that are made well! It's just that 'made well' is also pretty subjective.

Dor

that has to be the worst of the lot easily. Next week is good though.

Ken R

You were not on cloud nine with it?

Nolan

Mine too

Michael Ducharme

A post discussion comment: I'm wondering if you guys are falling into a bit of a "Seinfeld is unfunny" response. I know you guys are fans of Seinfeld, but there was a time where that show, being so unique and sucessful, had it's style and approach to comedy copied to such a point it became the mainsteam way to do comedy for awhile, and people who grew up with all "descendants" of that show went back to Seinfeld and found it uninnovative and not funny because they already seen all the series that came after and played with formula and style Seinfeld popularized. I think that's what may be happening with BSG. It was a new, innovative take on TV sci-fi, shot differently, lit differently, doing things in it's writing that hadn't really been done a lot, with near film quality effects for the time. (For reference, "The Scorpion King" came out in 2002, a year before the miniseries and the CGI in that was TERRIBLE) and it left such a mark on TV production, it and LOST inspired a lot of television for the next decade and a half - the TV you guys probably are most familiar with, so that BSG maybe feels LESS innovative and creative to you guys than it actually was? Just something I pondered while watching.

Nolan

I had a feeling you guys would like this one. Not one of my favourites, but it has it's charms I guess. The comedy definitely feels out of place given the post apocalyptic nature of the series, but I appreciate the need to get away from the doom and gloom once in a while. I always have a good chuckle at Roslin handing the bottle to Ellen without even looking. Seriously though, Ellen is such a piece of work. Right when Tigh is starting to get his life back on track she shows up to drag him back down. Not just the alcoholism either. I'm sure the rumors of her sleeping with half the fleet are an exaggeration, but I'm sure they have some basis in truth, especially given her behavior in this episode. I know one youtuber going through the series a little while back was not a fan of Tigh from the start of the series, but when she got to this episode, completely flipper her opinion of him. Seems Helo is perhaps getting his first suspicions that Sharon might be a cylon, but I think on a conscious level he's still in denial about the possibility. As for the centurions looking janky, even 20 years ago they did. I think when they're just walking around slowly, they're ok, but any time they have them run, the physics are just all wrong and they look fake. The space stuff tends to look really good in this show, but the centurions were always a an issue to get right.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Huh... this is usually considered the worst episode of the season. You guys are nothing if not consistent in your unpredictability in not following consistent overall fan consensus.

Nolan

My favourite of S1 is up next

Timothy Nikiforovs

After seeing this episode, I understood why Saul is the way he is so much better. It is interesting writing to see how someone behaves and then, later on, learn about the influence that drove them to that point. The execution of that story beat is really good here.

LMPGames

And now you’ve met Ellen Tigh. Lol. She reminds me of my sister in law.

Connor Fallon

During the post-watch: "There has to be machinery in there" I think that's not necessarily the case. The spine effect could be a form of bioluminescence when triggered by some event, our own nervous systems handle electrical current, and the computation capability by the organic tissue of the human brain is off the charts.

Chris L

Not sure why this is considered the worst sure it is lighter in tone but has some good progression too

AzoriusMage

I love this episode because it is completely unique in tone, plus Ellen is a great addition to the show and would eventually become one of my favorite characters just because she brings such a different energy and mood to the scenes. For me, there is only one kind of bad episode of this season, unfortunately it is still to come.

Ken R

Something that is interesting about this episode, and I'll comment on it on my take as well if the Patron takes are done - as far as critical reviews go, this episode is consistently ranked by critics as being the worst episode of the first season, and one of the worst of the entire series. The criticisms leveled at it are that the comedy doesn't work, that it doesn't fit in with the tone of the show overall. I've seen other reactors get very confused by this episode as well, because there were scenes that they thought were supposed to be deadly serious but they had comedic music, and reactors who got confused by it felt similarly to the critics. I enjoy this episode (and all of the first season), but I would also rank it as the worst of the first season personally - I did feel it went a bit too far on the comedy (in particular the shot gag near the end where Adama's and Tigh's heads turn simultaneously felt too silly). I'm relieved that you guys liked this one because I thought that you would see this as two bad episodes in a row. Also interestingly, critics usually rated the previous episode "Flesh and Bone" of one of the better ones of Season 1, and that's one that I disagree with.

Michael Ducharme

It's remarkable how a talented director can make all the difference. I can imagine if someone other than Edward James Olmos were to direct this episode; it would have been an hour of cringe-worthy boredom. He brought so much to this and really reinvigorated the show at this point. On another note, I have to say that I've been watching you guys since the beginning of TOS, and I enjoy all of your reactions and commentaries, however... ... you know how annoying it is when the music for Number Six begins just before she appears to Baltar? That's how I feel every time Alex goes on about hating Roslin and the actress that plays her. We get it, bro. You hated her before, you still don't like her now. But enough. Isn't it time to move on and focus on something else? There are many things to like about this show, and there will be many more things to hate, if you are so inclined. Broaden your horizons.

Jeff

I really think u take what people say not to heartburn it clearly bothers u . Anyone w a brain knows how u guys react and how u are . Steve the greeeen hand

I like this ep, my thoughts This ep, two words: Ellen Tigh two more words of equal value: Cringe Worthy

Prof Moff

Ellen is so toxic, that if she cut her finger and the blood hit the floor, it would melt through the ship like Xenomorph blood.
