2024-07-11 19:33:28 +0000 UTCYes, there isn't a real mystery for the viewer, except for how it will reach its inevitable conclusion. But, I believe the ending, with Data's major growth, will change it from an okay episode to a like or love episode. Bur, we'll see.

2024-07-11 15:35:23 +0000 UTCData must have known his colleague would get behind the “something happened during transport” lie - he knows there would have to be a huge diagnostic and reports if they believed that it was the transporter not the weapon. Maybe reading the room was more human than firing.

2024-07-11 10:58:57 +0000 UTCDoes Data lying about firing the (awesome) weapon change how you view the character up to now and what you were expecting moving forward? I guess he’s lucky he abducted Data, not Lore!

2024-07-11 06:51:08 +0000 UTC@Timothy Nikiforovs Data knew exactly what had happened and what he did right as he was being beamed out. He did not tell the truth to Commander Riker. He sidestepped the truth or a blatant lie with a plausible "well, it COULD have happened" deflection. And (presumably) Riker didn't press it.

2024-07-11 06:45:15 +0000 UTCI am glad that David Rappaport was ultimately replaced by this good friend of Brent Spiner. Rappaport just was not the right fit for this role.

2024-07-11 00:29:15 +0000 UTCI predict you are going to like this one. Do you think Data felt anger, or did he simply come to the logical conclusion that Fajo must die? Which is more terrifying?

2024-07-11 00:03:38 +0000 UTCLike The Price, this episode makes me uncomfortable because it centers around a sleezy villain. However, I know many people consider this one an underrated gem, and some even say it's their favorite Data episode due to the ending.

2024-07-10 23:07:48 +0000 UTCI found this a tough watch as I was aware of the story surrounding it due to the David Rappaport being well known. I recommend you reacting to “Time Bandits” (1981) by the way.

2024-07-10 22:01:38 +0000 UTCI love this episode and think you will too. You'd think we'd eventually get bored of the narratives that circle around the idea that Data is a thing, not a "person". But I'll hand it to the writing, they have kept that theme from feeling tired. Also, it's interesting to think that Data has obtained this level of fame throughout the quadrant that some rich asshole is actually plotting to steal him. I guess Kivas Fajo has never heard of Lore...
Jack Shipley
2024-07-10 21:27:02 +0000 UTCA very good episode imo. Even more so considering that because of the bts tragedy of the original actor for Kivas Fajo, Saul Rubinek was given the script last minute and he ran with it. What did you think of Data’s story arc in this episode?

2024-07-10 19:17:07 +0000 UTC(Star-Trek-Eye-Borg) You guys will love this episode. It has everything you seem to look for, good story, good acting, moral dilemma, well paced, and great character growth. By far the best Data episode to date. Great guest staring role for Saul Rubinek. Which isn't surprising, he's a great actor, good at playing pompous, slimeballs. The three biggest scenes that show Data's growth are: 1. Data makes a logical decision that killing Fajo was more moral than following his basic programing. Therefore he showed he's sentient, and makes his own decisions. 2. Data decides to evade the implied question from Ryker. Though technically, he didn't lie. 3. When Data throws Fajo's own words back at him, "I am only an android", is such a major mike-drop moment for him, you can't help but laugh and cheer.

2024-07-10 18:05:37 +0000 UTCCaught this one some years ago after I had given up on TNG and was surprised it was as early as season three because it felt like it would have been much later. I loved this episode the first time I saw it and still do after rewatch. Kivas Fajo was great as the darker side of characters like Harry Mudd and Cyrano Jones. Am I the only one who interpreted Data's final line "I am only an android" as a dig directed at Kivas?
Nick Sauer
2024-07-10 17:58:52 +0000 UTCImportant Data episode, especially the ending. One plot hole I never liked was that the crew figured out quickly that the contamination was manmade and would have hunted Fajo even without Geordi's inisight.

2024-07-10 17:48:39 +0000 UTCThis is one people seem to love, but I find painful to watch. It feels like a 15 minute plot stretched into 45. We get repetitive scenes of Data refusing to comply with Fajo, and the crew is just slow enough to figure out the ruse to justify the episode length. The crew coping with his death when we know he's not dead feels like wasted drama. I'm going out on a limb and predicting you won't like it.
JGoss
2024-07-10 17:44:12 +0000 UTCI've always thought Data and Lore are more alike than we like to think. Data can kill and lie. If it's not based on emotion, his algorithms can reach the same place.

2024-07-10 17:39:51 +0000 UTCIt's ironic (and kind of sad), but Data pulling the trigger was the most human thing he's ever done.
EnigmaticPenguin
2024-07-10 17:19:29 +0000 UTC"Technically" he didn't lie. He said "perhaps something occurred during transport". Something like, oh I dunno, I pulled the trigger. He just didn't get that specific.

2024-07-10 17:09:33 +0000 UTCI actually didn’t like this episode, but honestly it had to do with Fajo being a truly despicable villain. So gotta give credit where it’s due.
Steve Krautkramer
2024-07-10 16:59:09 +0000 UTCI agree, collecting Data would be a feat that requires a lot of thought and planning, but, I suppose it demonstrates the mentality of having something just for the sake of having it. Then, Fajo will quickly move on to the next thing to collect.

2024-07-10 16:57:55 +0000 UTCI love this episode. Great ending. I'm certain Data was killing Fajo as he was beaming out, fascinating that he lied to Riker about it. There's a lot to read into about that.

Nolan
2024-07-10 16:32:12 +0000 UTCData really is the ultimate action figure. But Fajo is such an unimaginative collector, of all the dynamic poses he could have put Data in, he opts for a chair. And it's a shame we only get to see one rather bland room of his collection, it'd be awesome to see if his whole ship would be one huge museum.
Nolan
2024-07-10 16:30:33 +0000 UTCThere's a lot to think about in this episode. If I were Data I'd have gone on a spree smashing the collection except the lapling, especially after he started threatening people. Did Data fire on purpose? I think so, to protect others, but then that means he lied to Riker's face. This episode is noteworthy as Saul Rubinek was a replacement during filming due to David Rappaport attempting to take his own life. Sadly he succeeded a few months later. The scenes he shot are on the blu-ray.

2024-07-10 15:28:08 +0000 UTCThe original actor for Kivas Fajo, attempted self deletion during filming. David Rappaport was smaller and had a more elaborate alien makeup (what he filmed is on YouTube). So, that intended vibe of Data being abducted by a diminutive alien is lost. All that considered Sail Rubinsk knocked it put ofthe part as far as I am concerned.

2024-07-10 15:22:57 +0000 UTCThis is one episode that, if it were first or second season, would probably be an easy top five, or perhaps an honorable mention. I don't think this cracks Season 3's top 5, but I think it's an episode you'll like. It's another reminder that Data is alive, and a person, and can't be "owned" by anyone. As mentioned by someone else, it's a Data Episode and it's a single plot episode with no real B plot in there, even though it takes place in different locations.

2024-07-10 15:20:08 +0000 UTCDavid Rappaport, a well-known British dwarf actor, had originally been cast for the part of Kivas Fajo. Rappaport struggled with depression during his life, and attempted suicide shortly after filming some scenes as Fajo. three days before the airing of this episode. Saul Rubinek was brought in to take over the role and complete the episode. the scene with Rappaport can be found on the TNG season 3 dvds bonus features and on youtube, you may want to check them out

2024-07-10 15:19:27 +0000 UTCA highlight of Season 3 to be sure. Another great episode to highlight Brent Spiner’s performance as Data. The unexpected replacement casting of Saul Rubinek as Kivas Fajo only made this episode better (he was cast to replace actor David Rappaport who attempted to take his own life over a weekend break during filming, and Brent advocated hard for Rubinek, personally reaching out to the actor himself). And the Baron-T disruptor scene….brutal!
Column Meanie
2024-07-10 15:18:27 +0000 UTCIn all of Star Trek that I've ever seen, classic or new, Kivas is by far my most hated villain. Saul Rubinek was a prominent actor in TV and film during this era, but I could not watch him in anything after seeing him in this episode. He was just TOO good at creating this perverse, disgusting character.
David Wayne Fox
2024-07-10 15:17:42 +0000 UTCFajo is naive to think Data would be incapable of killing him, in fact his monologue probably convinced Data to do it. Why do you think Data lied to Riker at the end about firing the disruptor?
Evan Guthrie
2024-07-10 15:17:10 +0000 UTCThe actor, Saul Rubinek, who plays the collector villain, Kivas Fajo, is terrific, but... he is a replacement for the original actor, David Rappaport, who attempted suicide while filming it. There is footage of the original actor in the role. Both were terrific. I like this episode for many reasons, even though I think it is uneven, but Data making a cold, hard logical choice at the end adds a ton of dimension to his character.
Paul Sage
2024-07-10 15:15:16 +0000 UTCSaul Rubinek kills it in this role as a last minute replacement, fortunately him and Brent Spiner had worked together on stage before and had instant chemistry that is easily seen on screen. One of my favorite Data stories his journey to humanity really takes a big leap with this one though perhaps to a darker side than he hoped.

2024-07-10 15:13:56 +0000 UTCYou like character episodes, you like Data episodes, and you like singular plot episodes, so you will probably like this episode a lot. Having said that, you'll probably end up hating it because of the concept. But I enjoy this episode a lot. It's Data-driven, has a bit of a mystery, and you get to really see one of the best reactions from La Forge I've ever seen (and he's had a lot).
