PATREON EXCLUSIVE UNCUT REACTION - The Godfather (1972)

PATREON EXCLUSIVE UNCUT REACTION - The Godfather (1972)

Comments

Btw, Talia Shire (aka Adrian from Rocky) is Francis Ford Coppola's sister. The baby being baptized is played by his daughter Sophia.

T’Pynyn of Vulcan

I like Part I best.

T’Pynyn of Vulcan

I'm late finishing the Godfather with you guys. To me, this movie is an example of directing, acting, music, cinematography, etc all coming together to make a movie that is greater than the sum of its parts.

T’Pynyn of Vulcan

Glad that you reviewed this one. In addition to bieng a lifelong SciFi fan I have also always been a really big fan of allot of various gangster related movies and TV shows also. Including all of the Godfather movies!

Comrade Wireless Caller

Not sure if you picked up on it since I haven't watched through the end yet, but they knew Sonny was going to be on the causeway because they set up the phone call from the woman to start a fight between Connie and her husband.

Evan Guthrie

Godather Part II, when? :)

Ca$hWednesday

Like many other folks, The Godfather is my favourite movie of all time. Yes, it does suffer from early 70's movie pacing, but you have to look at movies from the lens of the time they were made. Despite the pacing, there isn't a single scene that I would remove or shorten that would improve the movie. I do agree with Alex about the Italy part of the movie being the part I least enjoy. I find it a bit clunky and everything kind of just happens out of the blue really quickly there. Still, I can't really think of a better way to get that part of the story across any better without making the movie even longer.

Ca$hWednesday

The attack on Pearl Harbor.

Josh and Alex: "What happened December 7th 1941??"

JD Nevesytrof

I understand and respect your reactions. I do think the movie is a classic and I have seen it multiple times. Given that the movie is over 50 years old, and pacing was definitely different then, so I can understand why some younger viewers who have not seen this film might be put off by the length and pacing. So it looks like it was one thumbs up and one thumbs down. Like always, I appreciate the honesty from you guys.

John5193

I also like Part 1 better than Part 2. I always thought I was an anomaly compared to other viewers.

Collin Freeman

or calling anyone Fredo...

Jovet

When did WWII start? I assume you mean on the American side. Remember the famous quote, “December 7th, 1941, a date that will live in infamy”. War was declared the next day (Dec 8th).

startrekiborg

14:35 Yes, Italians are from Italy. Sicilians are from Sicily. Sicily, the largest Italian island, has a distinct history, culture, and even language.

Jovet

I always enjoyed Part I better than Part II. They're both good movies but I feel like the first one is simpler (believe it or not), and has Brando.

Joe Concepts

I hereby brand Alex a heretic.

Charlie's Illiteracy

You sure about part of that? ;)

JD Nevesytrof

One has Brando and James Caan. One wins.

Charlie's Illiteracy

By the way, calling an Italian person "Fredo" is generally considered an insult--for good reason.

Charlie's Illiteracy

Alex is currently watching it now!

Josh (Target Audience)

If you guys haven't seen it yet, I would recommend the show The Sopranos. It's about a mafia family in the late 90's/early 00's.

Rj Simas

Losing Apollonia changed Michael forever.

Charlie's Illiteracy

A comment about the Sicily side story. If Apolonia had lived, Michael would have a marriage with a true Sicilian who understands the life. When she was mistakenly killed, that life was killed and he married an American who does not truly understand what she is getting into. Therefore the transition from Sicilian roots to American roots is finalized. Whether that works well or not is yet to be seen.

Bantha Fodder

OMFG! I the fucking Godfather! Wow! I didn’t see that comin’. I feel like I’m Luka Brasi’s fingers.

Rich Cirivilleri

If you liked Marlon Brando as The Godfather, for a somewhat different take, you should watch him in The Freshman with Matthew Broderick.

Collin Freeman

Love the film look forward to watching the reaction when I have the time 😂

Paul Rymer

Toy Story 2: Toy Story Breakin' 2 Electric Boogaloo: Breakin'

JD Nevesytrof

Godfather Part II: Godfather Empire Strikes Back: Star Wars

Matt Newmark

I think 1 is clearly superior to 2. I’m always surprised people say they prefer 2. 1 is perfect, every scene flawlessly executed and necessary. 2 is more all over the place, sprawly and occasionally hard to follow, though still amazing.

John M.

While I won't say what direction the sequel goes in, you see what I think are meant to be hints of Michael not being the same as his father. Primarily Vito saying family is the most important thing. But Michael sets Tom aside (he's essentially family), and then lies to Kay's face and "closes the door" on her. Maybe his getting rid of Carlo could be part of that because of Connie's reaction, but he deserved it and she had to get away from him.

Joe Concepts

Glad to see you liked this one. I was worrying movie reactions for this channel just wouldn't be as good an idea as TV shows.

Joe Concepts

I really like it, though when I was young I found it boring. But I can certainly see how the movie may not be for everyone. I could be slow, too, if you're not as interested in the plot or the people.

Joe Concepts

Yep, it's about 20 seconds off. Actually seems to have a big blank space where the Paramount movie logo should be.

Joe Concepts

Unpopular opinion but I never liked The Godfather, it's SO long, the characters are all unlikable, there's no one to root for. It was hard to get through. It's not like the movie isn't well made but three hours of THOSE people? I just can't, it's too much.

Phillip Grischa

He got upset with it because it makes him look like a bitch

harrypothead42024

Would love to see Josh's reaction to Godfather 2 considering he loved the first one. Also wonder if it could change Alex's opinion of the franchise.

DustmanNorochj

Great watch guys. When's II? (I still haven't see II yet)

James Bottas

Frankie got mad as hell about this movie because it clearly hit a little close to home.

JD Nevesytrof

Josh, I'm super glad you appreciated the film, honestly I picked this so long ago before I knew your guys' tastes and styles as well as I do now and I feared in retrospect that it was the wrong move as soon as it actually got picked, but I really enjoyed this rewatch with you. Alex, I'm glad you at least saw it, now get some sleep bro. ;)

JD Nevesytrof

Are you implying that Scillians are NOT dramatic? SIR.

Steven Johnson

True. Nevertheless, it's an interesting and entertaining speech, as Tarantino's dialog often is.

Collin Freeman

I wouldn't call that a historical viewpoint as much as a dramatic speech

JD Nevesytrof

The Johnny Fontaine character is loosely based on Frank Sinatra who was heavily rumored to have connections with the Italian mafia. The incident about being in a film was based on Sinatra trying to get into his first big film role in a movie called From Here to Eternity.

Collin Freeman

For a brief explanation of Sicilians, I recommend watching True Romance. Watch for a scene between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper.

Collin Freeman

lol 👍

PIG

I have no idea if they like it or not but I’ll rewatch it with them again. I love this flick.

PIG

This is often called the best American film ever made, and has a ton of fans. You'd probably be wise to release the full reaction on YouTube

Ken R

“ROBERT DUVALL!” Edit: In case anyone is worried I'm yelling at another member, it was Chris Griffin who said that.

PIG

I feel the exact same way, JD.

Collin Freeman

I'm off too... possibly because there are so many versions. On paramount plus they seemed to be 25 seconds ahead

Mark Magana

It insists upon itself.

Steven Johnson

I have no idea where they are versus my time. I'm watching on Paramount +. The Paramount Pictures presents comes in at 00:22 for me. Can anyone help? Ok, never mind, I got it I think

Eric Brinkmann

Shame about the subtitles on that disc though

JD Nevesytrof

It's been years since I last watched this movie. Too long, probably. This is a good excuse to revisit it. And I enjoyed it a lot more this time around than I did the first time I watched it. Maybe I was too young 2 years ago when I watched it the first time. LOL.

wildhunt1973

It’s a tough one. Deniro is amazing in pt 2 but you can’t beat Marlon Brando. Iconic.

Mister Hope

Personally, I consider Godfather I slightly better than II, I'm in the minority there, but I absolutely concede II has some incredible sequences that I love

JD Nevesytrof

Awesome. I know you guys have a lot on the schedule but if you enjoy the Godfather movies, there’s an excellent show on Paramount called The Offer. It came out a couple years ago and is a drama based around the real events behind the production of the original film looking at the studio side of things. I think you guys would dig it.

Mister Hope

My guess as to where the thumbnail reaction's coming from... 🐴
