Evidence that Riker is a great first officer: when he meets with the senior staff in his quarters to discuss Fake Picard's strange behavior, and Worf mentions mutiny, Riker raises his voice and slaps him down hard. Riker is always more stern with Worf than with anyone else under his command, because he knows that's the most respectful way to treat a Klingon.

Charlie's Illiteracy

This is my platonic ideal of a TNG episode. Great mystery with a sci fi twist that utilizes its premise to explore the characters. Not to mention both plot lines are actually of equal value for once! hooray!

kevin coleman

Yes, the reason why the aliens replaced Picard is revealed at the end, but the audience knows the Picard on the Enterprise is fake for almost the entire episode while the crew does not. That's the very essence of 'the audience knows more than the characters', which is the paradigm TA typically doesn't enjoy.

Lovok

No I got your point, it's just wrong. The viewer doesn't know squat about what's going on other than that some weird floating brick scans Picard. The reveal doesn't happen until the very last 5 minutes of the show.

“Well, sir, I find it hard to believe you're that good a singer.”

Jovet

Hey! Captains are gonna captain.

Jovet

It always strikes me as a later-season episode, not S3.

Jovet

Second appearance of a Bolian after Capt. Rixx in "Conspiracy". The race was named after prolific TNG director Cliff Bole.

Cirk Bejnar

Before this episode, were you aware that you needed to hear Patrick Stewart singing British age of sail diddies over a pint?

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

to find something new in this wonderful year... (take it from here Geordi)

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Yeah, I know he's checking her pulse, but it's kinda awkward and always made me think he was choking her too!

tyranusfan

Well, such an OPEN guy. They all liked him, but he was hardly "outgoing." :)

tyranusfan

Fun episode, but not very memorable.

tyranusfan

Not sure how you'll like this one. You're ahead of the crew the entire time on the ship, but you're fully into the mystery during the prison scenes. I guess you'll like at least half of it?

BN13

The "cadet" is from Bolius 9. Bolians of course named in honor of your main man, Cliff Bole.

JGoss

Fun fact: the abducting aliens in this episode were played by twins Jerry and Jeff Rector to ensure they looked identical, as they claimed.

Justin B

Ti's to glory we steer...

The Ninth Doctor

Great chance for Patrick Stewart (and Gates McFadden) to show off their acting jobs. Plot is a bit middling, but then we get Picard rizzing up Beverly and singing 'Heart of Oak' (a traditional Royal Navy tune). Which did you guys prefer - imprisoned sleuthing Picard, or the riz-lord drinking-song Picard..? 🖖

The Ninth Doctor

I can't say it's great. The prison cell scenes are largely meh, and everything fun that happens on the ship means nothing because it's not the real Picard. In the end, a good Picard moment is when he traps the aliens with just a glance at his crew. I also really like Esoqq's character design. Overall, this episode doesn't develop characters much and is surrounded by far better episodes plot-wise, IMO. But that's the good thing about episodic shows. Some will tickle your fancy, some won't, but you can find someone somewhere who likes every episode for various reasons.

Justin B

Cheer up my lads.

Faitestealer

I believe he was checking her pulse because she was lying so still.

Evan Guthrie

A dip in quality is not saying much given the high bar. This is a great episode IMO.

Evan Guthrie

Fake Picard is still so fun to watch that they may overlook the lack of mystery. Plus they will freak at the spicy stuff with Beverly.

Evan Guthrie

I love that the crew’s tipoff that Picard is an impostor was how personable and charming he was. “Surely our captain couldn’t be such a swell guy.”

Evan Guthrie

Those aliens could be Instagram influences for glute building workouts. I'll see myself out.

Greg Quinn

So fake Picard is in most ways "just" a copy of real Picard, with all the memories and knowledge of real Picard...but kinda controlled by the alien captures. But the things he did seemed like they were motivated by real Picard desires/drives...Beverly for sure...probably singing with everyone...heck maybe real Picard has even wondered "if I told them to get really close to a pulsar, would they?"

Greg Quinn

Always weird to me how Picard wakes up the Ensign (who is actually one of the capturing aliens) by grabbing her throat. Lol?

Greg Quinn

I like singing Picard.

Greg Quinn

I'm a big fan of the 'Picard in prison' half of the show. The other half doesn't work for me. It would have been better if the whole episode was that side, and we only find out when he returns that there had been a copy on board the Enterprise. Or even that there wasn't a copy, and they had been search for Picard the whole time.

Jeffrey

I honestly love the fake Picard. Id watch a miniseries about him commanding a Starship

Neill Shaughness

Another average episode with some great out of character acting. And continuity, referencing the Mintakans from "Who Watches the Watchers" as well. Oh yeah, and some wild alien designs you'll love.

Nolan

Just a fun average episode, but still a sign of the massive increase in overall quality of the show. Even the episodes that don't really have much to say are still engaging with fun character moments and good dialog.

JGoss

Fake Picard singing for the crew is a memorable bit. And I always kinda liked the ending. But otherwise a mediocre showing.

Alexander McKechnie

That's about all I could come up with too.

JGoss

This is a classic Star Trek by the number episode. Characters put into a test, check. This test is by an advanced alien species that doesn't understand a specific humanoid characteristic, check. It's like the Savage Curtain without all of the killing.

Nick Sauer

This is a dip in quality after four good-to-great episodes. This episode has moments, like Picard's sea shanty and date with Beverly, but overall, I find this episode forgettable. Worth the watch, but a rewatch is optional.

Justin B

It's not that they wanted to steer the Enterprise into a sun, it's that they wanted to learn about command and heirarchy. The point of the star thing was whether they would obey orders with no explanation that would have put the crew in incredible danger for no reason. I don't think they were actually planning on killing the crew, just seeing how far the respect for the chain of command could be pushed.

paultardspambot .

I kind of forgot this one existed 🤣

irohtheteamaster

This is one of those episodes that was a lot better than it had any right to be but was still just sorta there. Patrick Stewart was definitely having fun in this episode, which was awesome to see, and this is one of the first times (there have been a few, but not many so far) where he can truly shine as an actor. Love this episode even though the B plot (A plot?) in the prison could have been better.

wildhunt1973

You missed my point. The guys tend to dislike episodes where THEY know more about what's happening than the crew does.

Lovok

McFadden absolutely kills this. Her facial expressions, her discomfort, everything. If you have even a minor crush on Beverly, it will go up tenfold here.

Paul Sage

This is a great character episode, that once again hinges on Patrick Stewart's acting abilities. Lots of good scenes between the rest of the Enterprise crew, and Picard is at his best, trying to escape from his mysterious prison and also being just a little (or a lot) "off." I think y'all are gonna love it.

John

Meh. I liked the scenes in the cell with the real Picard more than nutty fake Picard on the Enterprise, at least the cell story had a mystery to solve but it wasn't a very interesting episode.

Phillip Grischa

Not really. Neither the crew nor Picard know what's going on until the end scene.

Trouty McTroutTrout

I'm very curious to see how you guys like this one. I think it's an excellent episode! Super cool costumes and aliens. Neat premise and I love the resolution which is saved for near the end. Typical Picard sleuthing saves the day again! My concern is you may find the doppelganger goofy. Also it's not really clear why the alien captors wanted to steer the Enterprise directly into a sun. Anyway a solid B+ episode for me.

Trouty McTroutTrout

You know how we said the back half of season 3 was full of bangers? Well, this isn’t one of them. It’s not bad by any means, just run of the mill. But it does actually mark the first time we see Picard at the regular poker game with his senior officers, even if it is the fake Picard.

Brian Moore

It's an episode of Star Trek.

Spencer Loften

Not necessarily one of my favorites, but did have some good moments. Like how Dr Crusher looked at Picard with a different perspective, even though she was seduced by Fake Picard 🤣🤣🤣

Christopher Dorn

Aaaaand... now we come back down to Earth after three straight bangers. This episode has its charms (mostly Fake Picard), but is ultimately fairly forgettable. Don't think the guys will like this one much, as they have more knowledge than the crew.

Lovok

Great make up in this one, Patrick Stewart clearly having fun. Maybe a step down from last few but still a lot of fun

Darren Seal

I always get so caught up with what fake Picard is up to on the ship, the electric scenes between him and his crew (especially Dr Beverly), that I usually forget it is fake Picard. I also love, LOVE, that it's fake Picard that breaks down the wall of professionalism between Picard and Beverly that allows them to be genuinely friends at last. Up to know, even with their more casual scenes, there's always a sense of captain/doctor overshadowing them. But now, finally, their friendship (and more...? Beverly certainly began to think so) gets a chance to breathe...

Andy Frankham-Allen

“What Beverly? You won’t sleep with me? Fine. I’ll find someone who will”(Slams door in her face) “Councilor Troi, report to the Captain’s quarters. On the double”

Chris S.

Another great season 3 episode with lots of tense scenes for Picard while fake Picard has a ball on the Enterprise. Patrick Stewart should have got a double salary for this one.
