This was pretty good, I always assumed Starbuck was basically physically manipulating ligaments and tendons in that ship to get it to work. Apollo's question to Adama seemed like needless TV writing though. Why would he even think his father would do more for Starbuck than him? Good scene, but very TV.

2024-06-19 23:36:27 +0000 UTCI've always taken the different contrast settings on the planets to be how the show demonstrates each planet's atmospheric composition. It doesn't quiiiite make sense in Trek how every planet would have the same color pallette and gradients of color if it wasn't a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere. Trek sometimes mitigates that with planetary sets, but BSG mostly films planetary scenes on location. As for the camera work, you've already heard it a million times, but it's that candid, off the cuff feel their going for, like someone saw Helo out a window and pulled their camera out to record without setting up the shot first. Again, birthed from films like "Saving Private Ryan" and amateur footage of (here it comes again) 9/11. Especially in these early days they wanted it to feel like the camera and whoever was filming was just sitting in the room filming what was going on around them, as much part of events as the characters, opposed to the more distant, neutral, set up and staged camera work of typical Sci-fi of the time. I definetely like the locked off camera of Trek, as it shows off the grace of the ships in that universe and the almost theatrical nature of the characters and actors, and I think that represents what Trek is trying to say, just as much as BSG's camera work is meant to be more phenetic, in the moment, punchy and grittier, cause that ties into what *this* show is trying to be about. I'd hate if the camers work were predominately in Trek though. It wouldn't fit, IMO.

2024-06-19 21:25:12 +0000 UTCAn early indicator of Adama's emotional investment is that he starts asking for guesses, when back in "Water" he tells the President at the briefing about the water tank explosion, that he doesn't like his crew to guess. Regarding "Star-Buck" written under the wing, it's really subtle, but if you look closely it's actually tape that you can see her taking from her pack and tying her busted leg up with earlier in the episode. Lotta subtle, easily missed details and character work in the show.

2024-06-19 21:08:02 +0000 UTCTigh didn't agree with Adama but wouldn't cross him as he knows how much he has his back too. The end scenes with Adama and Lee/Starbuck were moving on a deeper more real level than TNG generally achieves, the human emotions are very real and gritty.

2024-06-19 18:41:41 +0000 UTCThis was the first episode where I started taking Roslin seriously as a character. Up until this episode I found her very unlikable. There were a few scenes here and there that showed some promise, but her progression from being worried about Kara, to being worried about Lee and Adama, to taking the initiative to fly to Galactica unannounced to lay down the law really added to her character a lot imo.

2024-06-19 16:12:17 +0000 UTCPossibly, but I don’t quite get why Adama would send Tigh just after he had relieved him for duty. Wouldn’t he just be in his quarters?

2024-06-19 15:16:34 +0000 UTCIt works because to me, it felt like it was implied that Tigh was the one who probably contacted Roslin to begin with, to tell her about the oxygen situation etc. Just my guess.

2024-06-19 15:02:36 +0000 UTCI found Roslin's rebuke of Adama & Apollo could have come across as quite comedic, (looks of scolded puppies came briefly to mind) but was saved by the authentic performances of all in that scene. Agree?

2024-06-19 14:28:46 +0000 UTCThought it was a little contrived that Adama sent Tigh to meet Roslin. Clearly a screenwriting shortcut to divulge the backstory of Zak and to pitch them both against the Adama’s, but not sure it made logical sense after Tigh was relieved of duty.

2024-06-19 13:51:45 +0000 UTCThis episode really is the anthithesis of the TNG writing edict. It's all inter-personal conflict among the crew and characters struggling to deal with their grief. Both are great in their own ways. Starbuck breaking down when Adama tells her she did good really get's me.

2024-06-19 13:37:23 +0000 UTCThe inside of the Cylon ship is EEWWW. Makes you wonder what the inside of Lightning McQueen looks like.

2024-06-19 13:29:59 +0000 UTCWas going through an estrangement with my dad when this aired the first time, and the moment between Lee & Adama hit me very, very hard. In this as in everything else about Adama, EJO's portrayal is *masterful.* Watching him work is the best part of BSG.
