While personally I too am happy to enjoy series independently, it is nice to have fanfic/fanart to admire and of course merch to buy in support of something I enjoy. But yes, there are few medium sized fandoms that strike that balance quite well. For me Gyakuten Saiban/Ace Attorney has been that franchise.
