Shows rarely had per-episode budgets over $150k back then. TOS and I Spy were the two most expensive shows on TV for the 1966-1967 season.

😁 Or folding tables (as far as I can remember).

On the other hand, Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG): TNG was shot on 35 mm film, and each episode had a substantial budget of $1.3 million1. This made it one of the most expensive one-hour television dramas at the time. The show maintained high production values throughout its run, and its budget remained consistent.

Not at all. While not on the bottom rung, it was considered Low Budget: Season 1: Around $190,000 per episode [Star Trek: The Original Series - Wikipedia] Season 2: $185,000 per episode [Star Trek: The Original Series - Wikipedia] Season 3: $175,000 per episode [Star Trek: The Original Series - Wikipedia] Which, considering the size of the cast, not not allow much for effects and set.

For its time it was an incredibly expensive show.

Since you boys really appreciate those TOS choreographed fight scenes, can we get more Alex and Josh wrestling?

T’Pynyn of Vulcan

I mean... They really did not have much of a budget in TOS. That is how the transporter effect was created. They had no budget to build a shuttle. Eventually they had a plywood prop of the side of a shuttle for shots, initially. Many Klingons in chairs getting appliances applied to their faces for many hours was a non-starter.

"Tribbles" hasn't aged well. It was legendary and beloved for decades, and one of my favorite episodes as a kid, but on my most recent rewatch, unlike most TOS episodes, it felt like a cheap and cheesy '60s TV show for some reason I can't define. Also, like the original "Ghostbusters," I've seen it too many times over the years for it to be funny anymore. "A Piece of the Action" holds up much better and endures as TOS' finest comedy.

If you're asked to wrestle again as Kirk will you shave, Alex?

Sam Langanke

Don't ask him to say necessitate.

17.9 years after this episode, Trekkies had celebrations worldwide for Cyrano Jones. The completion of ridding K-7 of tribbles!

Great job on the video! As a child, I had wonderful relatives who took me to ST conventions. Shatner was always HILARIOUS and. in this episode. he shows off his wonderful comedic timing (also in A Piece of the Action).

Leningrad exists in the 23rd century... so the Soviets DO come back! 😱

This is supposedly the episode that got Gene L. Coon fired as story editor. Reportedly, Gene Roddenberry went on vacation and left Coon in charge of everything. On the day he returned, they were filming the scene where all the tribbles get dumped on Kirk. Roddenberry, it’s said, had a fit over his show getting turned into a slapstick comedy, and the blame fell on Coon like… a pile of tribbles.

This is still one of my favourite episodes, though I recognise it's not the best. What can I say? I just love cute, fluffy animals 😂

Hang on! Alex can pronounce quadrotritecale perfectly off the top of his head, but you both continue to call the Sheliak from 'The Ensigns Of Command' the Shellikans!

Numinous2019

Hurrruuummmmph! Jose Ferrer in the 1950 film. 😀 🤥🥸🤧

One of the all time greats of Star Trek. Considered a classic by generation after generation. Something the writer never though would take off. "This episode is alright." -Alex *AUDIENCE REEEEEEING*

Thank you. I didn't want to be that person, but the mispronunciation of Cyrano was setting my teeth on edge. Have a nice movie night with Peter Dinklage (2021), Christopher Plummer (1962), Kevin Kline (2008), or even Steve Martin (1987).

Yes, Cyrano (SEE-ra-no - watch it again!) Jones WAS supposed to be Harry Mudd, but I kinda like that it wasn't, because that would have taken away from the flavor, IMO. The fight scene was especially well choreographed, mostly because with all the bodies flinging and flying around, the biggest concern was to NOT damage any of the RENTED chairs! The bartender and the station manager were both character actors who have been in almost every TV show in production at that time. Kirk's obvious annoyance when the tribbles got dumped on him arose from the fact that this was the sixth or seventh time they shot it. Something went wrong with all of the other takes, and they needed this one to come out right.

Scotty is not only "the leader of those guys". As Lieutenant Commander he is their superior officer.

Sam Langanke

I still think this is a top tier Star Trek TOS episode. It's just a fun watch, no massive world-ending storyline, a good fight scene, (no god-characters); but I will say Kirk was kinda the weakest point in the episode. You could tell he was bored and the rest of the cast was carrying the episode. My only complaint, and normally I really respect William Shatner playing Kirk. But this time he just felt off, like "I can't believe we're doing this for an episode." I can understand why you don't consider it a favorite and respect your opinion on the matter. You do bring up a lot of valid points, and you make me see things from a different perspective, so thank you.
