Finally went back and you're right @Jovet she is 😁

Dru Blood

Good point, Steve Boshear! It's slipped past me every time for the last 30 or so yrs... It's like misheard lyrics that remain misheard even after learning the correct phrase. The crew I was with when this show first aired was a lot more forgiving of nitpicky details in the special effects, or inconsistencies in character reactions and story arcs. We came up watching shows and movies with more of the "suspension of disbelief" y'all may have heard about. Sure, the show looked orders of magnitude better than the original series, but seeing it now, I am noticing that NexGen is looking a bit dated in the same measure that it made TOS look dated. And well it should have, since the original really was made at a time when science fiction was still considered by society to be at the same level of sophistication as comic books. The original show practically invented the modern language of science fiction, after all. There was a definite line that could be drawn between "before ST" and "after ST" This show allowed the fans of science fiction to stand up for their fandom for the first time. Society also had to get used to knowing there were science fiction fans everywhere, and not many of them wanted to get used to that idea. Even now, I'm guessing that it's still the major portion of the population that snickers at those folks watching a tv show about a guy with pointed ears, and taking it way too seriously. And then of course, Star Wars happened, and the paradigm was moved forward again, this time by leaps and bounds! Now, regardless of the disdain held over the devotion granted these childish fantasies, like it or not, pretty much everyone in this country knew approximately what "Beam me up" meant, and "May the Force be with you", and simply having a notion about who Darth Vader is! Next Gen was scoffed at by Star Trek "fans" who couldn't open themselves up to the world created by Gene Roddenberry, if anything had changed, like the cast, and the look and feel of it. Another before and after line appeared. Not where I was, 'cause we all loved watching Star Trek again! So, with that, I remember that we quite liked this episode. It ticked off all the marks we expected it to, such as "ship in danger", "somebody gets zapped by the aliens", and we were given a giggle or two. ("So did Dr. Frankenstein!") It didn't give us the impression that this was just episode 'x' mixed in with episode 'y' of TOS, so we were just fine with it! We appreciated that we weren't supposed to like or to sympathize with Dr. Stubbs. From the beginnings of this art form in ancient Greece, I'll lay odds that they portrayed the villains as equally nasty, self centered, and boorish, so long as it moved the story along to the proper conclusion. And yes, we were all just as pleased to have Dr. Crusher back, too! \\//_

I recall that at the point that Wesley met Guinan in the bar, everyone was supposed to be confined to quarters. That's why the bar is empty.

Elizabeth Palladino

In this case its not a spoiler worth getting in a tiff over. She's gone, folk.

Steven Johnson

It's also why at the end of the scene with Guinan, Beverly calls Wesley and chides him for not being in his quarters, since he's off duty. "Orders are orders, Mr. Crusher."

Steve Boshear

The ship was still on red alert which, as Wesley explains to Stubs, means anyone not on duty must return to quarters immediately. That's why Guinan said "I was never any good at being confined to quarters." She wasn't supposed to be there either.

Steve Boshear

It’s so different than NuWho (which I also absolutely love) and the 1 thing I miss from that era was the serials. The earliest adventures, the better, with not even having a regular number of parts. Always a next chapter, never knowing whether they’d be “safe” by the end of the episode 🥰💙💙💙

J Mays

I find myself wondering why the bar seems to be closed (or at least empty) when Wesley is laying his nanite traps. Wouldn't it likely have people in it at all hours, since the Enterprise has 3 shifts going at all times? Just an observation when rewatching the episode. (which I've done repeatedly since they first went off the air)

D'Lytning

@J Mays High five for Doctor Who (classic)! That's my fave sci-fi series by far!

Jovet

Okay, but I really enjoyed the above discussion. I agree and disagree with different points, but they’ve all been made 😁 I enjoy pretending we’re in that date, awaiting what we are. I like to think a little bit historically, too. Different things we remember from the day (personal or otherwise). I’ve led a few people through Doctor Who in the same way. My mother and I are in the middle of Season 21 and it’s approaching Valentine’s Day, 1984. I’m only 2 years old 😆💙

J Mays

This is a lot of words for a vaguely inconsequential thing, but details are like that 💙

J Mays

I reviewed them again and I do have a correction. Season 1&2 have a mostly interrupted starfield behind the Sol system. Only once, when Saturn dramatically rises up in the fore before fading far enough back that the starfield surrounds again as it moves up and we pan left, moving stars enter frame in the foreground and Picard’s monologue begins. In Season 3, its numerous flashes to different locations, ultimately zooming in on a different ringed planet, behind which we can see the perspective shift of the starfield as we circle the planet, briefly. The same starfield is present inside the inner ring as it moves right, but then there’s a transition as the rings fill the screen. Here, I was wrong about the wipe curve, insinuating it was on the very edge of the outer ring. The last gap before the outer rings is where the old starfield can first be seen. The new edit remains between the inner rings and the planet. The shots only very nearly line up, but you can see both sides of those rings and the different starfields for just a moment. The movements are not quite the same 💙

J Mays

“You can see the wipe curve that follows the rings and transitions.” You could see that before, too.

Jovet

Just remember that Dr. Pulaski almost off'd herself by making herself an overconfident lab rat!

Jovet

10 Forward has food and drink. Normally on the ship synthahol is served instead of alcohol(mentioned in s2). But also soft drinks are served (prune juice for example). Drinking age in the US where the show was made is usually 21 so it’s safe to assume Wesley is unlikely to be drinking alcohol. He’s probably not even drinking synthahol.

Crankygrandma

We see Wesley in what's generally accepted to be the Enterprise's bar... do we think there's licensing laws / drinking laws in the future? Everyone has a replicator at home, so I thought maybe it's just considered a lounge? But Guinan serves real booze as well as synthahol. In the UK, some pubs can't have anyone under 18 in there at all, nicer ones that focus on food can have anyone in there when accompied by an adult. I don't think you'd ever see a group of unaccompanied teens chilling in a pub. What we call a 'bar' has even stricter rules I think.

Leyton Jay

How many of the letters calling for Gates McFadden's return were written retroactively by Alex?

vasili1097 .

Yeay! Now I'm feeling the benefit of membership, I had nothing to smoke a joint to tonight 🤪 until now! Good job guys xxx

Leyton Jay

Dr Pulaski did her job well as a ship's chief medical officer, not discounting that at all, I just am and always will be a fan of Dr Beverly as she was my first Star Trek crush...😍

Dru Blood

Greg is arguing in-universe explanation. David’s talking writers’ excuses lol 💙

J Mays

I believe it’s the same recording of Patrick Stewart at the start. If you watch closely, you can see in the original intro, a smooth star field throughout, but in Season 3, watch as the rings pass just before Picard’s monologue begins. You can see the wipe curve that follows the rings and transitions. I enjoy this one, but one thing that bugs me about this episode: the conversation Crusher and Picard have about her son. 🧐 Surely, that conversation happened more around the time she actually came back on board. 😆 That, of course, was on Stardate *obscured text* 😏 On the subject of the credits: I’m someone who loves the music, but doesn’t always read the credits; but I let them play through, because it puts me at peace of mind at all the people who made what I watched. Sometimes I’m reading them closely, not always. On spoilers in the credits (No Spoilers), there’s a Voyager episode where if you spot the name in the guest cast, you have some intrigue left wondering how THAT name arrives on the show. lol 💙

J Mays

More that it fit the plot of the episode.

David Brown

Pulaski was able go do a technique that Crusher couldn't. Because she's a better doctor.

Greg Quinn

From a purely medical standpoint... Pulaski is the better doc...

Greg Quinn

@Steve Boshear That isn't to say that the episode titles aren't spoilery! They sure can be. But they're "official" spoilery. The trailers are "official spoilery" too, but they show much more than a mere title can convey. But, they tend to not show it in context—they're just trying to hook and interest potential viewers. It isn't something I would have bothered to recommend, but I think it's fun that they avoid the titles. It will be exciting to see how they react to a few of the titles throughout the series, too.

Jovet

I agree. The editing is excellent. Great job overall. Give yourselves a pat on the back but don't use a Vulcan lirpa.

T’Pynyn of Vulcan

Fair. And yeah, this is not the first time I have discovered that different people have different definitions of "spoiler." I, for example, would absolutely consider the episode titles to be spoilers. I think they are right to avoid them. At the end of the day, I think you're right. It costs nothing to say nothing at all about what's coming up and then we can be extra sure we won't bother anyone.

Steve Boshear

Will the 2nd TNG movie be about those nanites taking control of a Federation starship and seeking revenge on Picard and crew for what happened to them on that planet?

Numinous2019

@Steve Boshear I mean, I wouldn't consider the episode titles to be spoilers, but the guys do. They avoid those, and they have been rewarded for that (e.g. Q episodes become a surprise). You can see in this video to how they reacted just to seeing Gates McFadden in the opening credits. (LOL!) To me, there is a big difference between "You are really going to like the second half of S3" or "Season three is just really good," and "Season 3 Episode 29 is 'hold on to your seat' amazeballs" or "Season 3 Episode 28 changes Star Trek forever." The first ones are pretty general, but the last ones are very specific about episodes. I have been around here longer, since before they started TNG, but my views are just my own. I'm not in charge. The guys have given no really specific spoiler directions other than “NO SPOILERS - If it is information regarding anything THAT DOES OR DOES NOT HAPPEN after this episode, don't include it in your comment.” They didn't comment on your post as spoiler-y, but the problem with them complaining about spoilers is they have to read the comment to determine if it's a spoiler. So, I urge to stay on the safe side and not put them into that situation. We didn't know what was next back in 1989, so it might as well be like 1989 for Josh and Alex. Though I guess we did have those spoilery trailers! But, I do know what is coming, and I'm super stoked for what awaits these guys—they will laugh, they will cry, their jaws will drop, and they may fall out of their chairs.

Jovet

I'm not 100% on how all the Patreon tiers are structured, but you're more than just the $1 tier you can go watch their uncut reaction to it right now. (Having a good copy to watch along with them helps.)

Jovet

@Anthony Bernacchi No we can't! It was black! Very very black! LOL! (Not the episode itself. The "you are going to hate this one" and the "this one is sooo terrible!" talk before they saw it was the black part.)

Jovet

Yeah it was just numbers. Available upon request.

Steve Boshear

According to Star Trek's official chronology, Dr. Crusher is 41 as of this episode (she turned 40 during Season 1). I believe Gates McFadden has been unforthcoming about her age in the past, but Wikipedia presently indicates that she was 40 when this episode was filmed (a year younger than the character).

Anthony Bernacchi

@Jovet We can call it "Shades of Gray" now. (Of course, Steve's deleted post probably listed the Season 3 episodes by number.)

Anthony Bernacchi

Stubbs is just a self-centered, emotionally-stunted asshole. He probably sees himself in Wesley, which is why he treated him as a future-equal. I bet he lost respect for Wesley when Wesley asked, "on the holodeck?"

Jovet

And yeah, pretend I've never seen it either. I can do that.

Steve Boshear

I mean I definitely don't agree with you, but I can see where you're coming from. I consider myself pretty pissy about spoilers. I will jump down people's throats over them, and if I were watching something blind, I would not consider what I wrote to be that. But it doesn't matter what I think, it matters what Alex and Josh think, and since you have been here longer than me, I'm going to assume you know better than me what they think. I appreciate you letting me know and I'm sorry if I crossed any established lines in the community.

Steve Boshear

Cool. Will look for it 👍

Dru Blood

S03E04

Jovet

@Steve Boshear They already saw your post, so it might not matter now. But.... if you KNOW going in that an episode is supposed to be good or bad, that can affect how you react to it and what you think about it. This is what bugged me so much with S02E22. With rare exception, I still say it's best to just pretend around the guys (who want no spoilers) that it's 1989 and none of us knows future episodes, plots, actors, etcetera yet. Definitely whip out your list for each episode after they watch it (in the Patron Takes) or at the end of the season. It will be fun to talk about! And welcome to Patreon!

Jovet

Oh? I thought numerical rankings of one man's opinion that they might not even agree with was about as spoiler free as it gets, but I'm happy to take my lumps and shut up if that's not the consensus view. I see a lot of discussion here about "I think you'll like the second half of the season" and so forth.

Steve Boshear

Well you're a deeper fan than me to remember that she's mentioned again somewhere as I don't recall. Lol

Dru Blood

Spoilers. And incorrect at that—she is mentioned again. (Which I only mention because they've already seen the episode.)

Jovet

Spoilers. Seriously. Don't post shit like this. They don't need any episode pre-judged for them. It IS a spoiler to write this stuff.

Jovet

If you're replying to someone, be sure to press the Reply button to that comment.

Jovet

Sleeping in is much, much better. I also like the new editing!! 👍👍👍

Jovet

That might not be 100% right. Besides they don't like spoilers.

Chtphr Rrr

Dr. Crusher just seemed like an OK character to me. She seemed too young to be the chief medical officer of anything, but perhaps the character, not the actress, is older and just looks younger due to 24th century medicine. However, it made no sense for her son to be left behind on the Enterprise for a year. I remember that I was a huge baseball fan at the time, but I also remember some excessive talk about baseball in this episode for some weird reason.

Chtphr Rrr

"How does a machine evolve?" Alex: "Not in front of Data." I thought Alex said, "Have fun with Data."

Chtphr Rrr

Thanks for the vid guys, knew you'd jump out your seats at seeing Dr Beverly back again. Pulaski is gone and never to be seen or mentioned again. More good things to come in this season... Can't wait!

Dru Blood

I concur with this assessment. Although I would give Episode 15 a 500/10 as well 😂

T-Bone253

Thanks! Happy to support you guys after months of mooching free content on YouTube.

Welcome to Patreon!

Josh (Target Audience)

I'm leaving a lot of comments today, but it's my first day as a patron, so I've got shit to say I guess. Here's my spoiler-free ratings for all of season 3. A 1 makes it painful to watch, a 10 makes it one of the best episodes in this series, and a 5 makes it just solid Star Trek. **rankings redacted after correction from fellow Patron. Leaving the comment here since there are some replies.**

Steve Boshear

Definitely one of the weaker episodes but a lot of good in S3 and of course the end, well hell of a cliffhanger when it was released!

Jasonn Pellegrini

"Took you long enough. Not sure why you saw fit to make your subscribers wait so long for S3, but whatever, it's up now" Youtube comments, probably

Timothy Nikiforovs

Target Audience has obviously gone WOKE hence moving their faces to the FAR LEFT of the screen!

Josh (Target Audience)

What is this new editing style? WOKE GARBAGE. No, i'm missing. It looks good!

Steven Johnson

Those have been a plague on YouTube. Hilarious though when all those channels shilling for those scam "Japanese knives" and Scottish lord titles had egg on their faces.

JGoss

Follow-up: one of the most annoying things about Stubs is how they tried to make us sympathetic to him by having him respect Wesley's intelligence. But that kind of just makes him more of a piece of shit when he fails to respect anyone else who's not a supergenius science prodigy.

Steve Boshear

I agree Dr. Stubs was an all-time bad guest character. As young as I was when watching this show originally, I don’t think I ever realized his dumbtastic episode was also the first return of Beverly Crusher. Back in my day (late 80's/early 90's), we just watched them all ad nauseum in whatever order they were syndicated to us in. And also, I think the concept of a "season premiere" wasn't as big of a deal back then. So as happy as we were to have Dr. Crusher back, I couldn't have told you which episode it actually happened in. I also agree with a previous comment that episode 2 isn't much better. I predict you will love episode 3, though.

Steve Boshear

Good bye, Spandex. Hello, Dr. Crusher. It might be a spoiler to say that this is one of the weakest episodes of the season because that means there are at least twenty episodes of better quality.

Jeffrey P

I think you pretty much nailed it with your initial analysis of this episode. Later episodes will definitely impress, I’m sure.

ChemicalCrash

I'm sure you've already heard/figured this out by now, but this episode is basically the Season 3 equivalent of The Child. It's one of the weakest episodes of the season. While on the whole, Season 3 is great, especially in it's later half, it's not without it's share of ultimately forgettable episodes as well. I'm not a fan of the next episode either. I like the Sheliak stuff, but I feel that the stuff on the planet has a cringe level of writing on par with the Outrageous Okona's mary sue. The girl character served no purpose ultimately, and in sitcom fashion, I felt like the solution was obvious the whole time and we were waiting for the characters to catch up. All the points about debate were completely lost since the debate itself was pointless. As for this episode, i feel like our unlikeable guest star character (can't even remember his name) is meant to be a warning to "gifted" people like Wesley to not get so caught up in one thing that you lose yourself to it. As a "gifted" person myself however, I never found this relevant. And watching it now I can see that all of his seemingly advisory words were just further inflations of his own ego. Dude's just a douche.

BN13

The Enterprise really needs better cyber security. That's why, at here at Target Audience , we use Squarespace" Missed opportunity to have the same sponsor as every podcast and YouTube.

Josh Turner

There are several episode moments your viewers are looking forward to seeing your reaction. Beverly in the credits was one of them.

JGoss

Who has two thumbs and guest stared on TNG? Bob Kelso.

Scott Wells

Gotta love the Dancing Doc!

Tim Boxall

Like usual you guys nailed your synopsis of this episode. I also think they wanted to highlight the higher budget special effects that were specific to this episode and maybe that's why they made this the premiere?

Trouty McTroutTrout

You have the audacity to post this after all that vamping?i

Ken R

Been thinking all of season 2 how happy you would be at the start of season 3. I was never a fan of Dr. Plastic as I called her due to that endearing personality she had but love me some Bev!
