POLL: Audience Cut Season 1 Finale Movie!

In August, we started this new series to watch movies chosen by ourselves and the Patrons and discuss them on YouTube. In the 8 months since, we have watched and discussed a variety of films. Some we loved, some we thought were decent, and some we did not enjoy! Regardless of the outcome, we have enjoyed reacting and discussing them! However, with the summer approaching, and big upcoming plans on the horizon, it’s time to make the decision for the season finale of Audience Cut!

A couple of special changes for this one. We are adding in movies one of the guys has seen already, but the other hasn't. There is one of each, and they are marked in the poll as such. More importantly, We're using a Ranked Choice Voting system to make sure the movie we end the season with is the one with the most interest!! Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Cast Your Vote

Vote for your top choice directly in the poll. This is your top choice for our season finale!

Step 2: Rank Your Choices

After casting your vote, please comment on this post with your 2nd to 5th movie choices. Format your comment like this:

2nd: Movie Name

3rd: Movie Name

4th: Movie Name

5th: Movie Name

Why Your Rankings Matter

If no movie gets over 50% from the first-choice votes, we’ll start eliminating the least popular options. Your rankings allow us to redistribute votes based on your next preferences, ensuring a clear winner. Once a movie reaches the majority, it wins!

Some Tips:

The poll will close on Sunday night, so make sure your voice is heard before then!

We’re excited to see which movie you choose for us to dive into for the grand finale of this first season of Audience Cut! Your participation is what makes this series special! The movie will be watched LIVE and discussed for the season finale of Audience Cut on YouTube in May!

Happy voting, and here's to a fantastic season finale! 🍿

1. Contact 2. The Rocketeer (not a great film, but a really good throwback to a age and style of film we don't see much of) 3. Hunt for Red October 4. 12 Monkeys (though in fairness the show is actually better, in my opinion) 5. Tombstone (mainly because I don't remember it and this gives me a reason to watch again).

2nd: The Godfather 3rd: True Lies 4th: 12 Monkeys 5th: Tombstone I've seen all but Akira. The Godfather is in a class of its own. Every movie fan should see it at least once, and it is THE must-see movie if you enjoy movies or TV shows about the Italian Mafia. All of the others are decent action/sci-fi/popcorn flicks that you'll probably enjoy.

But I love nerdy things like voting systems. And for the kind of thing like figuring out what movie will best please an audience, it's Approval Voting all the way. Just allowing people to vote for as many different options as they like, and going with the option with the most votes.

Jeff Cornell

I'm not sure how the poll interface works from your side of things, but to do proper Ranked Choice voting, it's not enough to know how many first-choice votes each movie got. When you eliminate the least popular option, you have to know specifically who listed that as their first choice, so you know what those specific people listed as their second choice.

2nd: Akira (1988) 3rd: The Hunt for Red October (1990) 4th: The Rocketeer (1991) 5th: Tombstone (1993) Thank you guys for your attention to detail and using a (marginally) better voting system (instant runoff) than basic plurality. It's too bad that better voting systems (in my opinion, anyway, Condorcet methods are best at representing the collective will) would be much harder to get people to understand and implement on Patreon. IRV is a good compromise, as it maintains a high level of engagement, and in the end its flaws don't matter in any deep sense (it's just a movie, after all).

My prediction is now that we have ranked choice voting, this is the first poll where a movie will get over 50%

2nd: The Hunt for Red October (interesting Star Trek connectuon) 3rd: Tombstone 4th: Blues Brothers (3rd & 4th, I could flip those depending on the mood for music and comedy versus a Western, but Tombstone makes the TOS episode "Spectre of the Gun" make more sense.) 5th: Contact, maybe. I think that movie is overrated, but a lot of people like it. 12 Monkeys? I just remember the movie being long. I don't remember much about Highlander, but some guys about your age really liked that movie when it came out. I voted for The Godfather which I also think is overrated, but a lot of people rank it as about the greatest movie ever, especially if they are an Italian-American or from New York City.
