They wouldn't have changed it and spent 10 minutes showing it off in TMP if they hadn't realized "we can make this better"

2024-04-26 13:11:41 +0000 UTCI know the ships and the tech aren't your thing, but while the Enterprise D isn't the ship I would pick if I could have a Trek ship in real life, it does have a special place in my heart. Watching TNG from around 3 years old, the adventures this crew went on were my primary means of escapism. That ship was almost like a second home in my imagination. I can close my eyes and picture all those sets in great detail to this day. I think a lot of people who grew up on 90s trek would feel the same. The Enterprise D is like sci fi comfort food.

They’re of their time, sure, but if you take the design of TMP as a whole, I think it’s an amazing achievement- so much of the design language of Star Trek comes from that movie. The sets were in constant use for the next 20 years, which says something about their quality (if not Paramount budgets) and the uniforms are part of that. I think they work way better than the early next gen uniforms as far as skin tight Lycra goes!
