So i watched the movie when my dad picked it up from Blockbuster (years ago... i just dated myself), i am huge scifi geek so he thought i'd enjoy it. truthfully i didnt really enjoy the movie however when the movie kicked off Three different Series under the Stagate name and ended with i believe 17 seasons and 3 direct to film movies which are pretty good. I truly hope yall enjoy the movie more than i did and i hope yall love the series as much as i do (if yall hopefully watch it). Nothing really to say other than Enjoy.

Which is weird, as he was in The Crying Game before Stargate. But maybe acting just wasn't for him. He even turned down reprising the role in a cameo for SG1's S8 finale (which is the end of the original era of the show).

I mean, people can say what they want, but this spawned a franchise that lasted for many many years after. A small bit of trivia, Kurt Russell visted the set of Stargate SG-1 when it was first being produced to check out the new cast and everything. He was quite pleased by all accounts. The guy who played Ra was VERY uncomfortable being on screen, and was incredibly self-conscious. As I recall he never did any major acting again.

I saw this movie when it came out and really liked it. I didn’t get into the series until way later when they brought in two of the main Farscape actors, which is what sold me to finally watch. I have forgotten most of it, so someday I may take a rewatch.

What do you say about a film that spawned a franchise of 3 TV series, books, and some iconic characters. Is the movie better that the TV show? Probably not, but someone saw the promise of the concept of gate to the stars and figured maybe it went other places. Simple change that all of get to reap the benefits of!

I'm sad y'all are doing the theatrical release. I'm going to have to dig out my original DVD to simul-play with you. Not the pinnacle of sci-fi in and of itself but spawned 17 seasons of great sci-fi television and 2 direct direct-to-dvd movies which I hope will follow your Star Trek journey.

This movie is not bad, but it’s not that good either. But the series it spawned gives me an appreciation of the film. SG-1 is right up there with TNG in my list of favorite sci-fi shows. Both series have the benefits of great casting and chemistry, as well as good writing. I have some favorite episodes in each series that I could watch 1000 times, and I’m probably close to that at this point.

Changed, thank you!

Such a fun film in the theater. This and ANONYMOUS are my fave Emmerich films. The latter being very very different than anything he's directed before or since.

David Arnold. ;)

My husband and I accidentally ended up watching this movie in the theaters when it came out, when the movie we had gone to see wasn't available. We had never seen a preview, and could only judge from the poster that it was some sort of sci-fi. We were completely blown away from start to finish! I can still remember the chills it gave me in the theater! There's too many phenomenal points to fully go into, but to mention a few, the stunning opening credits scene, the awe-inspiring setting, the epic score, the incredible acting by all, the director's ability to completely immerse the viewer in the story, the geeky trivia sprinkled throughout, and the brilliant way they balanced intense scenes with light-hearted moments. Back in 1994, this almost immediately earned a place on my list of 10/10 movies. Now, 30 years later, it's STILL high on the top of my 10/10 movies list, because every time I re-watch it, it gives me nearly as much pleasure as it did the first time in that theater. It's timeless and immortal. And that's HARD for any movie to do.

This is one of those movies I always watch when it comes on. I never got into all the TV shows, etc that came after, just the movie. The only requirement to enjoying this film as suspension of utter disbelief re: some of the INSANE scientific and plot holes.

great movie, I haven't see the theatrical version for a while , I have the blu-ray that has the theatrical and unrated extended version. I think the extended is a better movie. if you guys ever watch the move again you should watch the extended version it has a lot more scenes and tells the story a little better

I may be alone here but I never cared for this Movie or series. My Father used to watch it every time it was on...both Series. I just never got into any of the Sci-Fi Series from the 90s after TNG, and there were a few after the Sci-Fi channel came about. I only got into one that Sci-Fi channel showed and that was The Lexx, not sure why. I think because it was so different and it had 2 different actresses who played the main character (Eva Habermann as Zev) & (Xenia Seeberg as Xev) who I think are Gorgeous! Sorry. 😉🤟

Funny how Kurt Russell won't shoot Ra because he's surrounded with little kids but he has no problem nuking Ra as well as all the little kids.

The stargate movie was an incredible idea in and of itself. A great standalone sci-fi movie. What makes it really great though is what comes afterwards in the form of 10 seasons of pure gold sci-fi series called Stargate SG-1. TNG and SG-1 are my favorite feel good, watch repeatedly series. They NEVER get old. I'm so jealous that you two will watch both of them for the first time and I'm all here for it!

The series absolutely builds a LOT on their characters, and O'Neill is, by design, almost a completely different character, aside from the backstory which is kept and built on. I highly recommend it, though I recommend going in with the knowledge that the first season has some early installment weirdness and stuff that is later changed for the better.

Joshua Hartman

I enjoyed the movie well enough, but Richard Dean Anderson was a MUCH more likeable O'Neill than Russell. There's a line in the SG-1 pilot that perfectly encapsulates the difference between the O'Neil with one L and the O'Neill with two Ls, but I daren't spoil it in case y'all ever watch it.

Joshua Hartman

Obviously you guys are aware of the existence of several stargate tv series. how do you think they move on from and expand on the lore presented in the movie? how do you think the plot develops?

TivAcrid

I am an enormous fan of the SG1 series, and it is NOT because of this movie. In the 90's, it was a brief neat idea to give the 'ancient aliens' theory a huge budget for a movie, and the 'whirlpool' effect from the gate was standout for the time. Beyond that, nothing about this movie is unique in the landscape of scifi, and isn't very re-watchable IMO

StonyD

This movie ALMOST approaches classic status. It has the cast, the visuals, the sense of wonder, and that great David Arnold score. What holds it back just slightly is lack of character development. It could have used just a few more scenes fleshing these people out so that we care more about them...perhaps the series does this though I've only seen a couple of episodes.

David Wayne Fox

You guys are absolutely correct about just how similar Stargate is to Independence Day. Having just rewatched that as well in the last week its pretty glaring. There are even some similarities in the designs of the aliens (who wear armor which makes them look bigger and stranger yet again) and the smaller fighter ships. Apparently there was a plan for sequels that would have gone in a very different direction than the tv shows and I've long wondered how much of that became ID4 instead.

Julie Carter

I remember watching this movie in late 1994/early 1995, while I was in college, at the campus theater. When the crew arrives on the desert planet, the film melted in the projector, prompting one of us to exclaim "Wow! It IS hot there!"

tyranusfan

I saw this movie when it came out and it would never have occured to me it would spin off in to such a large franchise. I used to mix this movie and "Soldier" from 1998 up all the time because Kurt Russel stoic military characters all blend together. I think this movie needed a director and performances with a bit more style and flair. It's overall pretty by the numbers 90's action movie with only the unique sci fi concepts distinguishing it.

EnigmaticPenguin

Excellent film. Engaging, plausible, wonderful tie-ins to history, actual use of and struggles with language, and real people having real problems. And Ra got done raw! BOOM, baby!

Jovet

A great film, elevated by David Arnold's incredible soundtrack
