PATREON EXCLUSIVE UNCUT REACTION - Stargate (1994)

PATREON EXCLUSIVE UNCUT REACTION - Stargate (1994)

Comments

Oh and I finally got covid for the first time. I don't know how I escaped it until last month, but I did. So I got to be incredibly sick for my birthday. I'm doing good now except my voice is all fucked up and I sometimes sound like a prepubescent boy. 😂

Lady Beyond The Wall

Timothy!!! Hey! :) ❤️ I've been good, enjoying the star trek over here, how about you?

Lady Beyond The Wall

Hey, small world. How have you been?

Timothy Nikiforovs

I think the music is really what makes this movie work for me. It's so iconic in my opinion.

Andrea R

One of my favorite of all times. I've watched the entire show too. Loved it 💗

Andrea R

Not gonna lie I got disappointed in the beginning. When I saw the notification on my phone my first thought was "Ohhh, they must be getting ready to start the Stargate series!"

E Parhas

I liked Stargate Atlantis better than SG-1. I actually watched Atlantis before SG-1. I'm glad I did, that way I didn't know they recycled a lot of stories and vilans. SG-1 is good, though, but it takes some time to get going (like 2 seasons).

Edweirdo

Isn't she, basically, Hermione? I don't find her that compelling, either. Crucial to the general balance of the story, sure, but she just magically does/knows/fixes whatever needs to be done.

Jovet

I feel like if they remember me saying this in the comments five years from now if/when they start SG1, I'm only spoiling things for the first twenty-minutes of the pilot before they introduce this explanation LOL ;p

StonyD

*shrug* Maybe! I didn't watch along with the exact version they watched either.

Jovet

As I said before, the movie is a pretty decent, OK film, but nothing amazing in my view. I'm pretty sure the only reason it won the poll is because of the strength of the series (which was great), and not due to the movie as an isolated thing.

Michael Ducharme

It did show their screen for a second during that subtitle, and when I saw the subtitle for Giza 1928, it didn't appear in theirs, so I wonder if they didn't see it.

Michael Ducharme

Yes, I was trying not to bring up the DHDs because of series related spoilers. That isn't established or even hinted at in the movie. It's a plot point in SG1 to even find out the gates capabilities. As far as the movie is concerned we do not know how he dialed home. - Presumed to be using a portable computer interface.

Steven Johnson

The series shows that there are natural "DHD"s (Dial Home Device) for every Gate throughout the known galaxy. They didn't find one in Giza, so Earth has to ad-hoc something together to make it happen. Everywhere else is simple button pushing.

StonyD

"I didn't find any of the non-film characters very compelling, either." Denied! Sam Carter is the single best female portrayed in science fiction. Hands down.

StonyD

Ditto plus infinity (but definitely not Stargate Infinity)

DG

Hey Guys, love your stuff, was here for your star trek stuff initially, but love stargate too. While I realize you've said you're not watching SG-1 at the minute, I just want to note for you it gets much better. They re-cast at the start of the series, and I think the cast they choose just work much better together and fit their roles much better. You also get a different director, that I think does a much better job than Roland Emerick. Not that I've got anything against this movie... like you guys said, it's ok, but I just feel like he hadn't really found the formula that makes stargate really work with this movie, whereas they hit on it pretty much right away in the series. Anyways, consider this my petition and recommendation for you to consider watching SG-1! :) Cheers guys!

FPG

I always presumed that they used a portable computer of some kind, we just didn't see it. Obviously, in the show, we know more about this, but in the context of the movie the fact that they don't establish *anything* leads me to that conclusion.

Steven Johnson

The problem with the gate requiring "technological sophistication" is in the movie they dialed home just fine with the other gate just sitting in the temple, without establishing any kind of "dial home device" or other technological aid.

JD Nevesytrof

I am the opposite, in that I like the show WAY more than 'Ancient Aliens: The Movie'. The show has so much more depth, exploration, and character development. The only thing it shares in common with Star Trek is that it is shaky in its first two seasons. But after that, pure GOLD. In this instance: Richard Dean Anderson > Kurt Russel.

StonyD

I could’ve been at a barbecue!

Josh (Target Audience)

@Target Audience I guess I don't watch things I care about casually unless I've seen it before. (But I am very selective about what I care about.)

Jovet

Hey, don't you be talking shit about Independence Day. That's my ritual birthday movie every 4th of July. A slice of pizza, and watching Will Smith punch aliens and Jeff Goldblum be the Blumiest Jeff? Also, THAT SPEECH from Bill Pullman. Chills every time. Honestly, ID4 is Emerich's best movie, with Stargate in second place. The Patriot would be my second pick, but it's so historically inaccurate that it hurts. 24:42: Doom, Half-Life, Quake, The Mist, From Beyond... It never goes well to open a portal. 29:13 Well, the one thing you gotta consider there is that the gate requires a certain level of technological sophisticated. They're somehow interfacing with the gate using our computers to tell it to "dial." So... Yeah you're not doing that until... 1960s, maybe, and even then most computers of that day just wouldn't be sophisticated or powerful enough to process the information needed. So you need the computer revolution before you can use the gate. 29:45 I'm convinced Alex isn't drinking fireball. It's just sweet tea in a fireball fifth. 1:04:42 Just edit in a "Hey Patrons, be sure to like, comment, and subscribe." OR, if you *really* want to irritate the shit out of people, get one of those old "Let's all got to the lobby" intermissions from Cinemas. 1:19:44 My favorite bit about that scene is, although its never explicitly stated... That reveal that these "Gods" (Anubis, Ra, etc) are just men... Jack immediately knows the threat they're dealing with. 1:21:14 The ancient Gods could be quite vengeful. Plagues, floods, famine. I think that's what the attack is playing into. Ra is striking fear into his subjects. People get hyped for SG-1, and it does have its moments as a TV show, but I think the movie actually holds up a lot better over time. The effects are great, that David Arnold score? Whew, sweeping, epic. He always delivers. Also, it's Kurt Russell. Like, come on.

Steven Johnson

Woke garbage. WOKE. GARBAGE.

Steven Johnson

There are pros and cons to our casual style of reacting. One of the cons is we are going to miss stuff, like anybody would when casually watching a movie with their friend.

Josh (Target Audience)

I *like* that it is different from Star Trek. It's just some of the writing is not very good. The regular tropes "everyone looks humanoid" and "humanity is very important" and "everything revolves around Earth" get old, though.

Jovet

LOL! What about Star Knight (1985) or Stargames (1997)?

Jovet

Well, it paid off in the film, when O'Neill was trying to ask where Daniel and the sneezing finally clued-in the natives of what he was asking.

Jovet

I guess that is the only thing that irks me sometimes with watching these guys react... they stop watching, stop reacting, and just talk amongst themselves while looking in the general direction of the screen but not paying any attention to it. Boredom?

Jovet

Oh *uck!! :jaw_drop: I didn't recognize him at all, but now I'm blown away! I KNEW I should have explored more pit woofie memories...

Jovet

Two things I greatly enjoyed about this film: • The immersive use of language. • The tie-ins to ancient Egyptian culture/lore on Earth. The story actually felt plausible! The easier it is for me to "suspend my disbelief," the happier an audience member I am.

Jovet

I stopped paying attention after a new spin-off kept coming out every other year. Maybe I'll give it a mind sometime. I can't say the shows I've watched have been bad, they've just not held my interest very well. Some of the lore they made is interesting, and some of it is not coherent and is, well, silly. It's not very intellectual, it's just a step or two above fanfic. Fanfic (in actual production) is a dangerous thing for any franchise, because the toilet soon follows. I didn't find any of the non-film characters very compelling, either.

Jovet

I like the movie better than the show. Ra is cooler than guys with “worms” in them. I rewatched it more recently and I like the show a bit more than I did. It feels like they wanted to be Star Trek but they don’t have the support infrastructure to do it. No ships, no Phasers they’re just diving through a portal and hoping they can get home again.

Philbot

@Jovet I feel the same way. Stargate was hit and miss on the episodes.. but Stargate Universe took a different approached and I actually really enjoyed that one.

TalynStarburst

Okay... suggestions for next month's movie- Starman (1984) A Star is Born (1954) Starship Troopers (1997)

Regan

Yeah, Josh was too busy telling Alex what foods he won't eat because they still look like the animal they come from and neither of them caught James Spader's chicken impression.

Regan

Roland Emmerich's movie production partner Dean Devlin has a DIRECT connection with Star Trek TOS. From another website: "Devlin has been a sci-fi fan since he was a child. His actress mother, Pilar Seurat, appeared in the “Wolf in the Fold” episode of the original “Star Trek.” [Her character was the lady who held the seance, as seen from the camera angle looking straight down from the ceiling.] “She came home with a phaser from the set and gave it to me,” he notes. “I’ve always said that was the crack that started my addiction.” "

Rhett Coates

What part of Stargate the series is "preachy"?

StonyD

@Tony Bain Yeah, the expansion of the story/lore is generally good, but its episodic nature bores me quickly. It's tooooo formulaic, too no-brainer, too cliché for me. At least, what I've seen.

Jovet

You mentioned that Daniel's sneezing never paid off in the story. It does pay off... In the show.

Jeff Cornell

@Tony Well, of course. I suppose a more accurate way to say it would be that the series became even more than anyone could have expected if they’re going just by what the movie set up.

Ragnarok

I have a movie collection of over 1600 movies. It is fun for me to listen to your impressions and thoughts , you were saying you don’t like to know what a.movie is before you go in I can watch some old movie again (stargate is a so, so movie good not great. ). Watching an along and seeing that same old thing through new eyes is pretty cool This movie suffered from trying to add in potential for a sequel late in the movie fluffing it some to leave room for the next adventure and more back story . Stargate sg-1 is good sci-fi most of the time preachy a lot. And builds its own narrative. Worth a look some day after you watch the black list Another exceptional series not quite great.

Thicketdweller

Alex, you're gonna HAVE to watch again because you guys were talking over the chicken man part ;)

JD Nevesytrof

Just a taste of a series than ran TEN seasons and is poised to return in the near future.

Mark Chrisco

5:20 It said it's 1928! Pay attention! LOL!

Jovet

I'm not a "Stargate fanatic" but I preferred the film! I thought the film was really well done, and Jaye Davidson's "breakdown" performance was chilling. The show was more "hokey sci-fi" to me.

Jovet

Just putting it out there: sometime between 2035 and 2040...when you get around to watching the SG1 show....ALL of your questions will be explained, analyzed, and expanded on down to the last detail over a decade of America's longest running consecutive science fiction franchise as officially recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records. Just saying.

StonyD

Well at least you don’t have to ever worry about running out of content to react to 🙂

TalynStarburst

Leon Rippy, I know him from DEADWOOD. Never made the TNG connection!

StonyD

I love that you put the "We're not watching the series" disclaimer at the start. It's probably my second favorite scifi series (never cared much for the movie) but yeah it is very long.

Doug

HA! “Kurt Russell comes in and goes ‘We don’t care about the pyramids; blow ‘em up!’ ‘But sir, we’re trying to figure them out!’” My god, how did these guys capture PERFECTLY the ENTIRE relationship between the Jack and Daniel of the show…without even having met Jack AT ALL yet?! 🤣

Ragnarok

I was wondering if you guys would notice the actor playing the mustache general.

JD Nevesytrof

Oh yay! The spin-off series are super great, so I'll always hope you guys get into that one day.. way in the future, of course, but hey I really like the movie too so I'm excited to watch it! ❤️

Lady Beyond The Wall

Very true! But I do still love it, and am very happy to see this franchise beginning.

Ragnarok

Oh, I know. Well, I know it’s a long way off, if ever, but it’s good to hear that it’s definitely on the list!

Ragnarok

As enjoyable as the film is the series and spinoff is way better.

Richard Davies

Got my ultimate edition Blu-ray on the way, can't wait to watch. As a kid into both ancient Egypt and sci-fi, this ticked so many boxes for me.

SinocTheHodgeheg

The Stargate shows join the "after Star Trek or going full time" list with Farscape, Babylon 5, and others

Josh (Target Audience)

STARGAAAAAATE!!! FUCK YEAH! God, why do I have to wait until I get home to watch this?! I REALLY hope this leads to the shows being watched! Or at least…two of them. So happy.

Ragnarok
