PATRON TAKES - The Last Starfighter (1984)
Added 2024-01-24 13:52:46 +0000 UTCWe are expanding PATRON TAKES to our Audience Cut series with a small twist. We will be asking for your takes after posting our full uncut reaction to the movie. This way you can respond to how we reacted to the film and have a bit more of a dialogue about it. This should be a fun way to to involve you, the Patron, in our discussion of the movie.
You do not have to respond directly to our reaction in your take though, you can still do all the normal things such as a brief review (3-4 sentences) of why you like/dislike the movie, a question for us or a fun fact about the film.
We are discussing the movie tonight around 6pm EST, so have your takes posted by then!

I saw this in the cinema as a kid when it was released and I've rewatched it several times since then and remain intrigued by it... in a sort of unusual way. For whatever reason, it's just never fully come together for me. I think all of its parts are interesting and fun ideas and the cast is charismatic and the imagery is memorable. But its always felt for me like the pieces are somehow stronger than the whole when assembled into this one film. I've always thought a solid reboot would be a good idea as I think that's exactly the sort of film that calls for a remake... one with good ideas and interesting pieces that just didn't fully come together the first time.

I had already known him as the slick, charming con artist from "The Music Man" so having him as a shady Obi-Wan in a Star Wars takeoff that also features arcade games? Big brain moment as well as a lot of fun for an 80s kid.

2024-01-24 14:59:17 +0000 UTCThere has been enough time that a reboot could be done they could improve the effects but the idea of a stand alone video game would have to be addressed The secret embedded video game aptitude test has been a trope used since video games were invented and this movie meant to collect on that hype. Today would it be an accidental download of a new ps/5-xbox game would they completely sidestep the video game trope , which means they might have to make it that they do a surreptitious genetic scan, or perhaps a father from the stars. It seems ripe with ways to bring it back and make it feel more contemporary Good movie certainly a cult classic of good quality but there is room for improvement What ways would you guys re-approach Alex’s recruitment. I think you guys make interesting alternative narratives all the time , so I am curious.

2024-01-24 14:20:10 +0000 UTCI saw this in the theatre when it came out and loved it. The music, the characters, the story, the VFX (inc most of the CGI) all come together to make something much better than you expect. This came out the year after Return of the Jedi at a time when we thought they'd would never be another Star Wars movie... This definitely filled that void. If they could maintain the charm it would be amazing if they carried on the story or even rebooted.
