An outtake from this episode, integrated with the episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I3XMxQX0gg Sadly, for Season 1, the video tape quality of the outtakes is pretty poor. They get better.

Ian Westcott

I kind of wish they’d saved the storyline about Picard’s Ex for a different episode. It doesn’t really connect to the climax and takes time away from the fun trippy sci fi story

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

I feel like you guys will like both the A and B plots in this one. I can't wait to see your reactions to the first time distortion scene in the turbo-lift and the one in Mannheim's lab when Data talks to himself. I remember being struck by the writing in the scene where Picard and his old flame have their conversation. No histronics or overwrought emotional confrontation. I remember thinking "how adult of them".

StealthMomo

I'm a guy trying to think of this from a woman's perspective here... But I really hate how they basically portray Picard's old flame as being stuck in a lonely life, with a work-obsessed scientist who seems kind of clueless, with little more to do than "support her husband." And his "It will be different" comments didn't sound very convincing.

Joe Concepts

Did enough happen in this episode? I feel like there's a lot of wasted time here, and we don't really get that great a sense of what the crazy time problems are here, other than a few visual like the elevator scene. The episode needed a lot more of those scenes.

Joe Concepts

It should have been "It is I!", actually.

Anthony Bernacchi

This episode was highly compromised by the 1988 writers strike (echoes of 2023- they were lobbying for a percentage of profits from the then-new-tech of vhs tapes). The writers admitted they didn’t quite work this one out but had to roll cameras anyway. A fun bit of Picard backstory and also that woman at the holodeck cafe is hella fine. Also typing this from the hospital as my wife prepares to go into labor with our second son. Merry Christmas y’all.

Stuart Arbury

The ending of this episode is kinda weird because of the 1988 writers strike, it didn't work but there was also no way to actually fix it so they winged it on set and did the Data thing without the audience getting the usual technobabble explanation.

Phillip Grischa

A nice use of time travel in a much different way than we're used to seeing (at least on Trek); the image of the three Data's trying to figure out who's who has always stuck with me. The romantic subplot works less well, perhaps because of the lack of chemistry between Stewart and Michelle Phillips, but at least it provides our first hint of Picard's wild youth...

Patrick47

I REALLY like how trippy this episode is, even though - or maybe because - it has questionable time travel logic. I love surreal stuff so I'm okay with the writers playing around with the laws of physics like this. Most time travel stories fall apart if you think about them too much anyway. (Exception: "Primer". Watch it if you like time travel movies.)

Tim b

A Data/Picard heavy episode with a showcase of what a player Picard can be when he wants to be. As for the time distortion plot I thought it was alright, but I just wanted them to do more with it.

Eric Bundy

Interesting how openly Beverly discussed her feelings for Jean-Luc with Deanna. Guess you can't really get away with denying it with a half betazoid around. You gon have that girl talk

James Bottas

Another good episode. Season one is ending strong. I like the Picard love story quite a bit, and the scene with the multiple Datas is visually interesting. Only complaint is it didn't really feel like a complete story to me, from memory. They just go there and fix it, relatively simply.

Martin S

That scene starting in the corridor, moving into the turbolift, then somehow ending up back in the same corridor is wild. I really like this episode. The back end of S1 is pretty decent. I think people were just worried the front-end would put you off.

Nolan

This timey-whimey stuff is yet anoteher example of tech in Trek that's never heard about again. And also, if there were a ripple in time, no one would feel it because they would be part of the ripple. (Well, one person might, but she's not in the show yet.)

Jovet

This one is pretty forgettable to me. I had to rewatch some to remember which one it was. This one is also pretty TOS-y in so far as gushing on about the (past) feels. Its only real forgiving grace is that at least Picard even grew frustated with himself!

Jovet

Another favorite of mine. The time hiccups are cool, the music score is great, and we get a little more Picard backstory here. Notice Data slips and says “It’s me!” instead of “it is me!”

tyranusfan

If you haven't seen the movie Casablanca, I'd definitely recommend adding it to a future poll, considering the title of this episode is a quote from that movie.

My predictions: - You took a small break before watching this one, to get over the shock of the last one - You really enjoyed the Picard backstory stuff and the time travel sci fi storyline (and Josh will love the Paris holodeck scene) My question: - How do you feel about Worf taking Tasha's job on tactical? During the pilot you said you were happy Worf wasn't the tactical officer, since the Klingon was such an overly obvious choice.

Andreas Schmitt

Picard: I enjoyed this backstory for him and getting to know more about him. The fear of connection drove him away from love, but it saved room for him to be a Starfleet Captain of the Enterprise.. at least he was able to give closure to Jenice (and himself) after 22 years!

TalynStarburst

What is it about starship captains treatment of girlfriends. They must know that in the vastness of space the one universal constant is that you’ll bump into your ex.

Paul Rymer

Don't know if you ever heard of the group The Mamas and the Papas (California Dreamin'; Monday, Monday), but Michelle Phillips was one of the Mamas. She's the only one of the four still alive.

KatWithAttitude

They really wanted to make Picard a Shakespearean level character. This episode is a failed attempt to build him up as a dashing Buck Rogers instead of letting Stewart and the writers naturally figure out who Jean-Luc Picard really is. Maybe we should credit Patrick Stewart for sticking his Picard in and not going where they were trying to push him.

Nerd's Gold

Picard, Paris, time shenanigans. A fun episode with a start to some Picard backstory.

Gregory

In this episode, effectively we leave the timeline we began the series in and join a new one, since our point of view Picard, Data and Riker are left behind in the turbolift when they encounter themselves and we instead follow the alternate ones. It would have been cool if this was used as a plot device in the future but I always found it an interesting choice.

JD Nevesytrof

This is one of those wacky, crazy, weird episodes that you probably have to watch a few times to fully understand. I like the story, if it’s somewhat difficult to follow. I’m going to predict Alex & Josh will just give a “okay” rating to this one. Fun Question (because I’ve got nothing for fun facts): Do you think the holographic woman Picard was talking to in the Holodeck was really a recreation of Dr. Jenice Manhiem? I only ask because Picard was extremely specific to how the cafe should appear, how do we know this program isn’t based on the famous “security cameras” that are everywhere in Trek?

The Game Show Reviewer

Kind of a whiplash episode after the last one. Talk about a different mood.

KatWithAttitude

While not the best episode, it does have some great moments of atmosphere and the time fracture with three Data's is a trippy visual.

Steven Johnson

I think both josh and Alex will rate this as the best so far.

Thicketdweller

Michelle Philips was a member of the ‘60s group Mamas and the Papas (along with “mama” Cass). She’s beautiful, but she and Patrick Stewart have zero chemistry together. Fact: originally they were going to “do the deed” but Patrick Stewart put the kibosh on Picard being a party to adultry.

Glenn Johnson Barnes

Well, while everyone is commenting on the other episode, I guess I'll be the first here 😂. I do like the sequences of the time shenanigans. The love story......meh. Okay episode. Do you like/did you notice the Casablanca influence on the episode?
