Back on track with a good episode for season 1. Loved Jonathan Frakes getting to play his trombone - adding some characterization which was something needed for all the characters.

Collin Freeman

Yet another episode with a scene expanding on Data and Geordi's friendship.

Joe Concepts

I edited!!!! :)

Dale Gonyea

I always figured that they built the new Spacedock at scale with the larger ships the Federation was building.

Terrafan

Trombone. he plays the Trombone.

What is your impression about the VISUAL effect showing the interconnecting conduit between the star base interior and the Enterprise airlock - showing the size of the Enterprise-D vs. the size of people near it, in those scenes? That's what impressed me the most about the episode other than the premise itself, and the surprise ending showing WHY the Binars did what they did..... I suspect Kirk and Spock would likely have come to a similar conclusion over this type of issue, as did Picard and Riker: reacting with understanding and compassion for another species, and what had to be done to save them. Might you guys concur?

Rhett Coates

TV trivia: The holodeck keyboard player who remarks to Riiker, "About that: don't quit your day-job" was played by real-life musician/singer JACK SHELDON, who sang many of the famous songs for the "Schoolhouse Rock" Saturday morning TV Shorts in the 1970s, including "'I'm Just a Bill" and also that series' most famous song, "Conjunction Junction." Those songs are on YouTube if you'd like to hear Jack's singing voice.

One of my favorites of the first season. David Gerrold talked about how the Enterprise D is way too big to fit through the space dock doors, but the lure of reusing stock from the movies won through. Of course, it's entirely possible the space dock doors were enlarged for Galaxy class ships. The episode rings timely now because Riker essentially falls for an A.I. woman. Minuette resulted from the Binares programing to read into Riker's deep desires for a girl and produce it, to keep him occupied. The same way A.I. now has these surrogate virtual girl and boyfriends who are everything the user could ask for (almost). As others have pointed out, the binars are all young dancing girls. The slices of life for each character were fun.

Mike Rogers

Finally!! The best episode of Season 1, it’s probably in my top 10 episodes of TNG.

Jon1701

My personal favorite of this season! Something kind of funny for me, when Picard and Riker go to the "Weapons Room", wouldn't the more appropriate name be "Armory"? Fun Fact: The shots for when the Bynar's and Cmdr. Quinteros board Enterprise through the airlock are reversed. The remastering team almost swapped them back to the correct order, but then they realized why they were reversed. Because otherwise, the tunnel looks like it's all of 4 feet long!

I always had a gay boy crush on Minuet. If I were straight , she’s who I’d go for.

Rich Cirivilleri

Now we come to it. My favorite episode of the season. This, gentlemen, is the quality you have to look forward to in the next season and beyond. Note that the actor who plays the star bass commandant you might recognize from his TOS appearance. Especially you, Alex, since Harry Mudd Episodes are among your favorites. That’s Gene Dynarski, who played Ben Childress in “Mudd’s Women”. He was ubiquitous in 60s and 70s TV, and noted for his solid, utilitarian workmanship.

Rich Cirivilleri

This is an enjoyable first season episode. Pairing up Riker and Picard for a change. Both Riker and Picard are very distracted by the holodeck and by Minuet. How they each deal with the distraction is the interesting part. Maybe for the first time, we see Picard take real ownership of his command and the Enterprise. Fun fact: Jonathan Frakes does indeed play the trombone!

Dale Gonyea

For me, what’s funny about this episode is when both Picard and Riker go to the weapons room to arm themselves and we cut a commercial only to come back and see you. They are just armed with nothing more than the standard type two pistols. With nothing more like a rifle or some form of grenades and body armor. Though the sad truth is Starfleet tends to not have proper ground equipment for it’s personnel.

This time last year I was making artwork using Stable diffusion, and Midjourney. So, for perspective, I am completely blind and I was proud of the art I made. I couldn’t copyright it so I quit. However, I felt weirdly like I was in the scene where Geordi was teaching Data to paint, a thought I had to chuckle at more than once. Is it that art imitates life, or does life imitate art? A thought where the lines keep getting blurred more every day.

I have always felt this episode was out of order, At the end of Datalore Picard remarks that they are late for their computer upgrades And angel one makes reference to a romulan presence in the neutral zone, which is not followed up in this episode. It is a fact that some episodes were filmed out of order, however I haven’t found a list of production order for TNG over the years, more on that another day. But, it feels that this was intended to be ep 14, and those effects heavy docking scenes likely slowed production down. This is my opinion I have no facts to back it up but it has always felt right. I know that ep 22 was shot after ep 23. Again more on that later not a spoiler just a note on production scheduling Also this version of the self destruct sequence seems to be quite a bit different than what we have seen before. Minuet is an AI construct designed to keep Ryker busy. Though his natural intelligence wins out. I think this is a truism I have never been afraid of Artificial Intelligence as much as I am afraid of natural stupidity. Sci Fi has a lot of tropes and that one has been beaten to death ever since the 1970 film Colossus: The Forbin Project This movie is the basis for what everyone thinks of today as Skynet. It is available from Archive.org. And is rarely aired today. Might be a good movie to look into. As I would enjoy catching your reaction to it.

Fun facts: Majel Barrett provides the Enterprise-D computer voice for the first time in this episode. And yes, that is Frakes playing the trombone.

Anthony Bernacchi

He also played Krodak in "The Mark of Gideon."

Anthony Bernacchi

Patrick Stewart once said, "I was very fond of the Bynars – maybe it was their pretty dancers' bodies." Apparently all of the bynars were played by young female dancers. The title of the episode is unique and memorable at least.

Chtphr Rrr

I liked this episode where it came down to Riker and Picard working together on figuring out how to take back the ship!

TalynStarburst

True

Sebastian_Frodo

I think they cover that well with Picard’s dialogue acknowledging the safety issues with the holodeck.

Paul Rymer

One of my favourites from this season, love the fact that the holodeck issues from previous episodes are acknowledged but most of all the resolution of the story shows how the Binars were well thought-out. The relationship between Riker and Picard is developed well too.

Paul Rymer

Which was the right choice, models and footage gets reused and correctly scaling objects to each other is not that important.. The vast majority of the audience doesn't notice and those who do don't care in many cases.

Phillip Grischa

One of the best of season 1. Great seeing the crew just having fun and enjoying some hobby time. Bet you didn't see Riker being a jazz trombonist coming. Also Picard and Riker having to co-op the retaking of the Enterprise is great too

James Bottas

I remember not caring too much for this one when it originally aired but did come to like it on a few re-watches. The Binars were an interesting idea for an alien species...What did you guys think of that Concept, also how did you like the Holodeck scenes? I think one of if not both of you will recognize Ben Childress from Mudds Women. He looked almost the same in this as he did in TOS 21 years earlier! I think you 2 will like it as much or more than the last Ep. That's it! 😀🖖

Duane Chancey

Fun fact. Originally this episode was supposed to air before the episode where captain Picard plays the role of a private eye on the holodeck not so long ago. In that episode he stated that he can't wait to try out the recently made improvements to the holodeck himself. Improvements that are done in this episode.

Sebastian_Frodo

One of the better halo deck episodes in a season that’s a bit heavy on them

Gregory

A season 1 favorite of mine. Andrew Probert, who designed the new Enterprise (and was helping in the art department at the time), realized that she should be too large to fit through the doors of the spacedock station from Star Trek 3. He designed an exterior docking setup, mounted beneath the "mushroom" upper section of the station, but the producers didn’t want to spend the extra money to make those effects, so they just reused all the Star Trek 3 footage, replaced the movie Enterprise with the 1701-D, and just claimed it was a bigger space station!

tyranusfan

I really enjoy this episode. We see the starbase from the movies for the first time in the show and the scenes in the holodeck are just fun. The title of the episode is the password they figured out. it's the names of the Bynars in their pairs: 11 & 00, 10 & 01. All the possible combinations of two binary digits :) (Ok I'm a programmer, give me a break ;) )

Andreas Schmitt

Note that while they obviously reused the Spacedock from Star Trek III, this one has to be a much bigger one since the much larger Enterprise D fits through the doors!

Joe Concepts

The debut of Riker the musician! Not the last we hear of it.

Steven Johnson

One of my guilty pleasure episodes. Sure, it's kinda dumb, but it's also kinda fun. I did always wonder why the Bynars only distracted Riker when they would need two people to work together. They probably had someone else in mind but then Picard showed up in the holodeck. I believe that just like the Talosians in The Menagerie and The Cage the Bynars were played by women and voiced by men.

KatWithAttitude

Fun fact: the actor who plays the starbase commander played Ben Childris (the miner who ends up with Eve) in Mudd’s Women.

Glenn Johnson Barnes

"It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission." This was much better than I remember. Another good holodeck episode. Like you,I'm finding Season 1 to be better than its reputation would indicate. I really think the later seasons are so good they make these look worse in comparison. Really enjoying revisiting them with you.

David Scudder

My initial comment - "And now you will understand why people say what they do about season one." And then I looked at the other posts. I clearly remember this as the worst episode of the season, a real groaner, but I am now very interested in rewatching it.

Nerd's Gold

Really one of the only good episodes of the season. Not crazy about the minuet stuff, but at least it gives frakes a chance to ham it up a little more than usual. the actual 'stakes' plot is a great star trek situation where noone's really bad, there's no real violent struggle, it's just a misunderstanding and some weird aliens who need help

TivAcrid

It seems like Picard is moving toward a more action-oriented sort of captain with this episode, I really like the pacing once everyone realizes there's a problem.

JD Nevesytrof

Easily my favorite episode of the season, I really like this one a lot. Favorite thing from this episode is maybe the perfectly synced up angry walk from both Picard and Riker. Seriously, how are they so identical?

Elway Simpson

I like this one, horny Riker and all. I feel like the Bynars are an interesting concept for a race and I am glad they're not "evil." And Worf's "If winning is not important, then why keep score?" quote from the beginning of the episode is one of my early favorites.

THE LORE!!!

I really liked this one when I was younger, but it''s kinda thin plotwise. Probably liked it for seeing the ship docked. I think this was the computer refit referenced a couple times this season, though out of order, but hey, continuity.

Nolan

Classic “low stakes” episode. I like it occasionally when there isn’t an existential threat and there’s fun shenanigans going on.
