This is my least favourite Q episode of the show. While it does start down the path of showing Q's interest in humanity, it also feels like he's at his most malicious to everyone except Riker. I mean in Farpoint he was judging humans as dangerous, but here he's claiming to be so fascinated by humanity and yet treating them like playthings with no regard for their lives.
I agree that Data's scene is a standout of the episode, and like other comments have said, it gives a glimpse of what the character becomes. Brent really started to figure out his character at this point.
If Troi had been there, Riker would have given her the ability to sense something useful for a change😂.
I also agree with the above comment that it came off really badly when Picard basically congratulated Riker for letting a kid die. Would it have killed him to say "I'm sorry you found yourself in that position" or something?
Finally the other reason I don't much care for this episode is that it makes Riker seem very corruptible. He doesn't come across as Gary Mitchell evil or anything, but he turns into a pompous ass virtually immediately after getting his powers, then gets humbled at the end and it's business as usual. Q Who did benefit from this episode being a transition point from Q's Farpoint appearance, but they could have done a lot better here.

The thing that annoys me the most part this episode, is that Picard practically gives Riker a pat on the back for not saving the life of a little girl. 😡🤬

Another thing that annoys me about this episode is that Riker upon getting Q powers just practically immediately becomes arrogant, and thinks of himself as knowing better with no indication that he has been using his powers other than to save the bridge crew earlier to show that he is becoming corrupted.

One thing that annoys in this episode and there are a lot is the line about how one hand phaser can take out an entire regiment. Correct me if I’m but a French regiment is around 4000 men never mind things like cavalry and artillery yes primitive but would leave one person with a phaser way out numbered and it’s not like that they would line up and let them be shot but would be returning fire. Hay n the end a phaser is still a gun that means you have to point aim shoot.

On the fact that Picard almost seems to talk about Q like this isn't only the second time they met him, back in the day I was a reader of the spinoff fiction, especially the TNG comics. I believe there's at least one Q story set in this first season. In my "head canon" I decided that story happened between Farpoint and this one.

Well to be fair, loneliness and lack of a sex life can be really hard on someone. If I imagine Worf as the only member of his species, absolutely no potential partners, socially also rather isolated... I could see why he longs for companionship and intimacy. It was maybe portrayed a bit crude, but I can still see that being something Worf misses very much, living among humans.

At the time the studios didn't want "arcs". The networks preferred being able to broadcast the episodes in any order and the studios were worried that people would go "Oh I missed the first three episodes, I have no idea what's going on, oh well, let's watch something else"

I got the peek in the soundstage door on planet Hell when I was visiting the sets. It looked pretty cool in real life and you could really smell the weird polyurethane smell of the big background cyclorama. But then I forgot all about that because the next set I went on was the Enterprise set

"Yes, sir. That is true. But I never wanted to compound one… illusion with another. It might be real to Q… perhaps even you, sir. But it would never be so to me. I actually think this is one of the best episodes from Season 1 (although that may not be saying much). Particularly, two scenes in this episode to me hint at how good the show will get later on. Those being the scene between Q and Picard in his ready room, and Riker and Q alone on the planet. Those are both really well written and acted.
Michael Mannisto
2023-11-04 00:20:47 +0000 UTC
I am not a fan of this episode for a few reasons, one of them being some of the dialog (the repetition of words like 'penalty box' and 'animal things', and nonsense lines like "Worf, you came out of nowhere." stating the obvious, which sounds like something from a Saturday morning cartoon). You both mentioned some other things that annoyed me. John de Lancie helps save the episode with his performance, as does Brent Spiner. We really start to see Data becoming a full realized character before most of the other cast.
Alex - your curiosity about the Q will be rewarded as the seasons progress. His next experience will be both important and memorable.
FYI - the planet set that Q sent the crew to play his game was referred to by the cast as "Planet Hell".

The show ran on channel 15 here which was the new FOX affiliate. At that time FOX only had on the late show Monday through Friday and prime-time programming on Sunday Nights. Channel 15 here ran TOS Monday through Friday at 6pm followed by new episodes of TNG at 7pm on Monday, new episodes of DS9 on Tuesday and then re-runs of TNG Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It was a great time for Trek.

I don't know, I do think that's what she meant, honestly. But I saw it as more of a "if I was younger, I'd be interested in you" kind of thing. And I didn't really mean that in any creepy way. :) I mean Q does say, "Consorting with the crew?" or whatever. But I guess even more likely, she's just acknowledging what a good guy he is.

I agree with Josh's appreciation of movies and shows displaying actor credits as the actors appear on screen. "Apollo 13" did that with several cast members in the opening party scene (although not Ed Harris, who doesn't appear until later). On the other hand, so did "Assignment: Earth" with Robert Lansing as Gary Seven!
Even though TNG, as you can already tell, is much more serialized than TOS, it's still a fully episodic series in comparison to shows from the streaming era, and the episodes were made to be seen in any order in syndication. That's why Picard gives such a full plot summary of "Farpoint," to fill in anyone who hasn't seen that episode. "I, Mudd" does something similar with "Mudd's Women," although in that case it feels more natural because there's a new character, Chekov, who wasn't in the earlier episode.
Many Star Trek fans of my generation first discovered Star Trek in syndicated runs of TOS and TNG, with episodes alternating on the same stations. Encountered in that context, "The Squire of Gothos" feels very much like a Q episode of TOS.

Troi was in the final draft script (available on the Star Trek Minutiae website), in which she has only eight lines, two of which are "The third ridge...?" and "Oh, no!" However, the script makes a noble effort to keep her involved in the story through non-verbal reactions. For example, when Riker returns from the planet angry after not saving the little girl, the script says, "Troi is watching Riker with such intensity she doesn't seem to be breathing." I think Marina Sirtis could have done some good things with her small role in the script, and it's too bad she was omitted.

It finally happened. I got the sync absolutely perfect on the first try. I'm ready for my Q powers now.
This is probably the weakest Q episode. It seems like they had two different ideas for the story. It could have focused on the games on the planet, with the crew trying to navigate Q's unfair rules and avoid having Tasha sent into nothingness. Or it could have focused on Riker being gradually corrupted by the temptation of the Q powers. But they tried to do both, and they both end up feeling rushed.

Maybe it's just my age but back in the 80s and early 90s flirting and making a compliment was also not such a big deal as it is nowadays. You could express attraction or affection without it automatically being assumed to mean "I want to jump on you right now!"

I had the same reaction to Q as Data at the time. There was a quarterly Star Trek TNG magazine that published summaries of a few episodes in each issue. A lot of photos from episodes. One photo was of that moment with Q as Data.

I'm thinking it'll be about three seasons a year...basically three months a season then one month off. Gets a bit more complicated once you reach DS9 since it will then be basically double length seasons that will throw off the neat three months on, one month off rhythm but i'm thinking Ds9 mid 2025 and TNG finale roughly in the second quarter of 2026

Lwhen I first watched this in 1987 encounter at Farpoint and Hide & Q I did’tparticularly like Q.
I
hope we wouldn’t see him again, because as I figured out from watching Q in those episodes later, they weren’t writing Q very well, but John Delancey had the spirit down
Every time I watch these episodes again I am so impressed with Delancey and so annoyed they’re trying to make him true lane instead of Q
