That's interesting and I'm not saying that it is heresy to like seasons 1 & 2. I understand your point about TNG becoming less of a risk-taking show. I would personally however see that as mainly not throwing ideas against a wall and seeing which ones stick. I'm Irish and 'Up The Long Ladder' is just.......well, there aren't adequate words.

Season 1 is really rough, trust that it gets better in 2 and then better still afterwards, This show took some time to really find its voice and direction. some shows just don't have it figured out when they start, that isn't to say season 1 is all bad tho.

Talon Karrde

I don't disagree with this at all. I remember when the show first aired, that I kept waiting to connect with the characters. This does happen, but it obviously took about 2 seasons.

Funny listening to the reaction and looking at the episodes ahead. In hindsight the entire season seems like a pilot for MUCH bigger things to come. Take the bad with the good because there is a LOT more good.

Stay with ST: TNG - and know that this series builds upon what came before .... and KEEPS ON BUILDING through all 7 seasons, and the following spin-offs (DS9, Voyager and Enterprise) all CONTINUE that trend with a huge store of fun and adventure -- and great story-telling -- through the 300-year saga that those shows created! There may be some stories that are difficult to meet your expectations for "Star Trek" from time to time, however all of them do indeed add to the astonishing tapestry that Trek has become. And then, there are some that will blow you both away JUST like we saw in you guys when you watched "The City On the Edge of Forever." I can already see SO SO SO many smiles and wonderment ahead for both of you; it's difficult to wait it out, but the reward will be seeing how both of YOU GROW by experiencing how it all plays out within this multi-century trek to the stars. The light within you guys is beginning to grow ever brighter as you take this ride, so much like those of us who have seen it all before experienced our "first times" as well. THAT is what makes this so much fun: we get to watch your journey and remember our own with these starship crews, all of which have taken to our hearts just like TOS cast did. That is so AWESOME!

OMG, what a great month to watch The Shining with you guys. One of my all time favorite films. Really looking forward to that!

We are aware there are many different adaptations of the novel that have been made but no we have not seen any of them

Have y'all seen the original The Haunting (1963), which is based on Shirley Jackson's novel from 1956? It's considered by many as a definitive ghost/horror movie. The Haunting of Hill House series is a modern reimagining of The Haunting story. Some years back ABC did a 2 part Stephen King movie called Rose Red that was loosely based on the original The Haunting, as well as other spooky influences.

Have you never seen The Shining? Love that film

I’ve heard some people take the tack of praising TNG season 1-2 by saying that it’s the closest the show gets to TOS. I just don’t think that’s true. The best episodes of TOS, IMO, are all driven by the characters. They are character-focused stories. Good examples of this are “Obsession” and “City on the Edge of Forever.” You really get to see Kirk and what he’s feeling and how he develops from the beginning of the episode to the end. TNG s1-2 episodes are not character-driven episodes. They are story-driven episodes. The characters are simply there to serve and move the story along, and the writers are incapable of really giving us more of the characters and their development. And of course, Roddenberry did not allow any real friction or conflict within the crew, with everyone agreeing all the time. When TOS was famous for the Spock-Bones arguments. So no, I don’t agree with people claiming that TNG s1-2 is somehow a great TOS-style show.

I am one that liked 1 and 2 more than other seasons. The other seasons have amazing eps but in general it got to preachy for me.

I know two people who actually prefer Seasons 1 and 2 over the rest of TNG. Anything is possible. One of them is "Warped9" over on Trek BBS. He did an extensive week-by-week review of each episode, and catalogued his ratings for each season. By the tail end of Season 5 he almost completely zoned out of the show. While I don't agree with him, I do understand what he was getting at. TNG "finds its footing" but it actually becomes far more risk averse in the process. It feels a lot "safer" at times than TOS in that regard. Especially once you get into Seasons 6-7.

Steven Johnson

I really can't predict your responses to ST at times, so it is possible that you will both (or at least one of you) find more in season 1 of TNG than most people do. That said, I would definitely go with strong alternative watching choices in case your responses are in fact similar to most people. Just remember that TNG does find its legs with season 3.

8 TNG episodes in October? Awesome. :)

The beginning of the TNG journey AND The Shining?! Great month ahead!

OOoh, The Shining! I've been meaning to catch up on the Mike Flanagan videos. Going into a more focused pattern for the rest of the year? I dig it. TNG and movie reactions. Hopefully that'll make things a little easier to handle on the editing side.

Steven Johnson

Looking forward to seeing your TNG reactions. Really enjoyed the T.O.S movie watches so far. Can't wait, you guy are awesome.
