UNCUT REACTION - Quantum Leap 2-part Pilot - Genesis

In June the Patrons decided we will be watching season 1 of Quantum Leap while we watch the Star Trek films. We start with the 2-part pilot! Neither of us has ever seen an episode of this show so we are both very excited!

We are watching this off of the DVD, so the pilot is presented as one episode. We looked at where episode 1 ends and 2 begins on Peacock and put syncs in those places for the uncut reaction. There seems to be one short scene in between them that is only in this DVD version, but everything else should match.

Thank you for being a Patron & enjoy!

UNCUT REACTION - Quantum Leap 2-part Pilot - Genesis

Comments

Scott Bakula being cast is something they might already be somewhat aware of. Details about the exact premise of the show and opinions about the feel of Bakula's character are spoilers.

Jeff Cornell

That is not a spoiler. It is a simple fact that I surmise our two illustrious hosts are already aware of, and if not, all they need do is visit Bakula's IMDB page and they'll see it in black and white. Period.

Rhett Coates

Can we stop with the spoilers??

Andreas Schmitt

Trivia: Scott Bakula (Sam Beckett in Quantum Leap 1989 – 1993) was later chosen to play Captain Jonathan Archer in the prequel Star Trek: Enterprise (TV Series 2001–2005) 100 years before James T. Kirk of TOS. STE was a more serious series and closer to our own reality. The theme song was different also which threw off dedicated fans somewhat. But Captain Archer was much more relatible and I believe closer to his crew. The part in the Star Trek history Captain Archer plays is captain to the first warp 5 drive ship and the first ship to be certified by the Vulcans to attempt human space travel.

I have some European discs of Galactica and Star Wars that I’ve had to put through a process of ripping the video, slowing it down 4%, extracting the audio, adjusting the pitch by 0.7 semitone, then recombining with the video. Annoying to have to do that stuff yourself when the disc makers could have done it on their end and more professionally.

James H

The first of many, many episodes that are basically direct ripoffs (homages) of popular films....the funny thing is, the show usually makes it work.

I am not sure that people that are not really into history would enjoy this show as much as a history NERD like me. 30 years ago more people were a bit more into real history than today but if you guys are going to have a go I am with you.

I won't be watching that new show. I've been burnt too many times with IPs I loved being screw up by people that care more about politics than story telling and heart. I sure as hell won't give them a chance to do that yet again to me.

Andreas Schmitt

If I had a beef with the pilot it would be its a little long in the tooth. The series proper I think is a little better paced most of the time. Some of the episodes are a little dull, but others are just amazing, especially when you're going along and then suddenly there's a realization of where and when Sam actually is and how it relates to history. Over five seasons they did a really great job evolving the character and also playing with the template. The "within his own lifetime" aspect may seem limiting, but there's a lot of history between 1953 and Sam's death,

I watched this show as a kid & still like it today. It's a really hard thing to have a new setting & new characters each week & make you care about them & get invested but I think they pull it off. The revival show is a different beast & had a rocky start but by the end of season 1 I think found it's footing & I hope season 2 will be even better

It's a lot like Star Trek in the sense that from week to week you never quite know what you're going to get, or where you're going to end up. Sometimes its bad, sometimes its amazing. Sometimes its sad, sometimes its funny. Often times its awkward. It's a generally upbeat show, and to be perfectly honest how many shows do you know where the core conceit is "hero has to help people" period? That's the show. It's about helping people. In this cynical fucked up world I don't know that you can really make this show again. Lord knows they did do a reboot in 2021, and... No..nonono... It completely misses the mark. Pilot is a little bit of a slow burn. It's interesting to note that QL was a late replacement show for the season. The first season is shorter than the rest for that reason.

Steven Johnson

Exactly, that's why the woman Al picked up had no idea what car he was driving. It's supposed to be a LITTLE futuristic, as I think they show on a few other episodes but not really by the "back to the future 2 " amount

Andreas Schmitt

We will look into it for a solution

Josh (Target Audience)

As Jeff has mentioned, Sam's time is supposed to be the mid 90s. So in the future compared to when the show ran, but not by much. And yes, every episode will be sam jumping into a new person, with a completely new cast. The only constants will be Sam and Al (the hologram guy). I liked the show because of that. It gives it a ton of freedom since every episode can be completely different with a different tone, storyline, etc. The catch phrase of the show (which will be in the opening scene from now on I think) is "putting right what once went wrong". So Al basically has to figure out each episode what Sam is supposed to fix :) And that's no spoiler, that's basically what the opener of every episode says hehe, that's the premise of the show, and I loved it. Every episode is totally different and always a great character story. Of course you have to like such stories and Scott Bakula's performance, otherwise you won't enjoy the show, like some people here indicate hehe. I loved it.

I managed to get through it. Great reaction, I'll leave my thoughts below. Regarding the framerate, from what I know movies are shot at 24fps. NTSC basically plays them at whatever framerate the player uses but keeps the orignal speed intact. In PAL countries the players operate on 25fps, so to avoid alot of technical crap they just speed the thing up and hope nobody will notics the 4% increase (even changes the sound pitch because of that). So basically my version runs 25/24 times faster than yours, so I run ahead and my version finishes earlier... So I guess if you'd upload a version that is shorter by a factor of (25/24) then that should be able to sync? Maybe we could do a test run of that? I know it would be stupid to upload two versions everytime, so I don't expect you to do that, but if you want to try, I think that's the factor that would be relevant. So I guess we just need to take your normal footage and speed it up a bit. No strict editing needed, I guess just shortening the duration of the video file in Premiere or whatever you use and re-render it? We'd have to test it.

Andreas Schmitt

There are multiple scenes cut from the two-part version. I gather y'all had several scenes about Sam having to fill out personal information for the military guys trying to estimate his supposed memory loss, but all of those scenes are cut from the other version. And it seems like a few other scenes as well. I was able to notice pretty quickly whenever the blurred scene didn't match mine, and I just paused immediately after the next loud, clear line of dialogue in my version and waited to hear it in the background audio from your footage, so re-syncing wasn't too hard. But it might be worth including sync moments at regular intervals (say, 5 to 10 minutes) for similar future situations. For example, the TNG pilot. As for the episode itself, the only thing that stood out to me as a negative was Sam's narration early on when he had amnesia. I get that they needed the audience to understand what was happening, and they couldn't use Al for that purpose until later on, but the specific narration and delivery felt pretty cheesy. When they're discussing Sam's options for getting home, Al mentions the option of just living out Tom's life from the mid-50s onward, and Sam will be back in his own time in about 40 years. So that puts Sam's time in the mid-90s. I don't think that world is meant to be all that futuristic. Just the secret base with the project has lots of futuristic experimental technology, including Al's car.

Jeff Cornell

This was bad to sync but I managed. You were asking about when this took place. Al told Sam he could just wait 40 years, which would put this in late 90s. You got the overall premise of the show it’s like an anthology with a new setting and cast each week. Only continuity is the back story of Sam and Al at least for Season 1

Jonathan

Yes, what frame rate are you looking for? Just curious because with BSG we used to be at 30fps when we did virtual but are now at 24fps with our video camera

Josh (Target Audience)

Sigh, NTSC vs PAL framerates are such a pain. I yet again cannot sync up with this :( I wish these stupid players allowed to select an exact playback framerate.. I constantly have to pause and unpause my version because it's running too fast compared to yours. Same problem I had with Galactica. Shame, I was actually looking forward to this... Edit: Can you guys somehow offer your reaction video for download? I could try and adjust the framerate in a tool then.

Andreas Schmitt

Hahaha

Josh (Target Audience)

Ugh. I can't with this show lol.
