UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TAS ep22 - The Counter-Clock Incident

Comments

TOS (and TASs) Sex Scoreboard The end but the movie start. Kirk 12 Chekov 4 Spock 4 Bones 4 Scottie 2 Uhura 1 Extras: Robert +1 Sarah +1 Oh yeah one last freaky-deaky before getting old again. I would not have gone back old. Now on to the movies. We will use the above board going into the movies. There is a couple of stretches here but I feel it is consistent on scoring.

That skit at the end was like an X Files episode teaser. Ok, that wraps TAS. I definitely like this ep more than Turnabout Intruder. Obviously the production quality was much higher there, but this one was just a nice way to end the five year mission. We get this new lore on the Enterprise's first captain and his wife, and they get to go on one last adventure together. It's a sweet little story. Obviously the whole thing makes no sense at all, but it was still an interesting concept all the same. My first thought with the Aprils was that because they were younger and we saw the others losing their memories as they got younger, I assumed they had also lost all the memories of their later years and wanted them back. But then how would he know that he wouldn't want to change anything. Even if he didn't remember, his past would be intact, and they would just have time to add to those experiences. Yeah I'd definitely take the opportunity in their shoes. It was also very generous of Karla 5 to give them her ship. Her planet, Arret, aside from meaning stop in French, is also Terra backwards which is the Latin word for Earth. Would have been cool seeing an Earth where the continents are the oceans and vice versa. We also get the second reference in 2 episodes to Capella IV from Friday's Child, the Minara supernova from The Empath, and the Beta Niobe supernova from All Our Yesterdays. So a few references, much like Turnabout Intruder. Anyway, on to the movies.

And the Minara nova they exited through was the star that went nova in The Empath

There are several YouTube videos showing OTHER EPISODES actually voice by TOS cast, and could easily be "finished" to add to TAS canon. Here's the title to look up on YouTube: "Star Trek: TAS Continues | Demon World | Proof of Concept".

Rhett Coates

You have it backwards, when they were split up CBS had the IP rights to to Trek & licensed it out to Paramount. They remerged which negated the need for a license, but with Paramount in bad shape rumor is they may sell of Paramount Pictures & go back to being CBS corp which would create the need for licenses again if this happens

Retro Tom

The 25% thing was put forward by "MidnightsEdge" and seems to be a misquote of some comments by John Eaves. The big reason that a lot of the things don't line up good (canonically) between Classic Trek and the CBS Trek is because until recently Paramount and CBS were separate and the new Trek had to be different because the classic trademarks and imagery were owned by Paramount. CBS got the right to make Star Trek, but it couldn't be the same as Paramount's because they still owned the rights to a lot of the IP. It really came down to merchandising mostly. The new trek couldn't have any products that were to closely related to what the classic trek stuff looked like, this was mostly supposed to be ship and uniform design but then the Discovery team just took it and ran with it and boom; lizard Klingons, ships that can fold space, holo-technology way to early, etc. To be fair, Strange New Worlds seems to have come much closer to the classic Trek than any of the other series, but it also started around the time that Paramount got control back of Star Trek. So yes some of it is due to the likes of Kurtzman and Goldsmith, but a lot of it was just due to corporate greed.

Tristan Rose

I feel the Aprils would have decided to stay young so they could live their bliss for another 50 years.

Ken R

That "skit" at the end of your reaction was funny with surprisingly good cinematography. Well done. On to the movies! I can"t wait.

Gary Leyh

At he very least, whatever legal agreements there are or comments from writers and producers, the parent company of the franchise, Paramount, is presenting Discovery and Strange New Worlds as part of the same universe as the original series, TNG, etc. Despite some changes in characters, technology and other things. They’re not suggesting they are a new universe in the way the JJ Abrams/Chris Pine movies are separate.

Joe Concepts

I'm just ending this here. It's not the reason we're here nor is either of going to change the other's mind so it's not productive so it should be stopped before it goes any further

Retro Tom

A: Source on the "25% different" requirement? How would that even be measured in an enforceable way? B: How does that make it a different continuity?

Jeff Cornell

It is not the same continuity. Paramount licensed Trek out to Secret Hideout much like how Sony has a contractual license to make Soider-Man movies. It has to be at least 25% different

Retro Tom

It's not a reboot universe. It's the same continuity as the classic shows. But they've given themselves permission to play fast and loose with the details of canon by pointing out that with all the time travel shenanigans that have happened throughout the franchise, not all of the details are necessarily the same as they were before, even though history will still line up in the long term.

Jeff Cornell

Strange New Worlds is part of Kurtzman's reboot universe & very obviously not part of the same continuity. Akiva Goldsman is the first person involved with Kurtzman Trek to finally admit it

Retro Tom

Fun fact, Robert April was the name of the captain in Gene Roddenberry's first proposal for Star Trek, which was never filmed. Then Christopher Pike for the first pilot "The Cage", and finally James Kirk for the actual series. So they decided to make the canonical history of Enterprise captains match the history of the show's development. Edit: I see now Retro Tom beat me to the punch on this.

Jeff Cornell

It's possible this is a retcon, but I'm pretty sure Pike had two five-year missions. Strange New Worlds is currently set I think 7 years before the start of TOS. With The Cage having taken place about 6 years earlier in Pike's first five-year mission, and the premier of SNW being the start of his second. So I think it goes: Robert April commands 2245-2250 Pike commands 2250-2255 (The Cage) Enterprise has a couple years downtime for repair and refurbishment Pike commands approximately 2257-2262 (SNW) Enterprise has another few years downtime for upgrades. Kirk commands 2265-2270 (TOS)

Jeff Cornell

Robert April is portrayed in Strange New Worlds - with a twist. His wife, Sarah, has not been introduced yet, but just give SNW time and more seasons..... we're waiting for that day. The actor who portrays Robert April on SNW is exceptionally good, showing respect, great leadership and love for those around him, and like many other aspects of TAS, many items, people, species and back-story from The Animated Series (1973/1974) are making their way into the Star Trek shows and movies that came after it.

Rhett Coates

Since you were trying to figure it out, the way it goes is Robert April commanded The Enterprise when it launched from 2245-2250. Pike took over for a 5 year run from 2250-2255. The ship then went under a 10 year massive overhaul & refit pretty much only keeping the outer hull & expanding the crew capacity from 200 to 430. in 2265 Kirk took command & the ship was relaunched

Retro Tom

As I said in a previous comment, next to Yesteryear, this is my second favorite episode of the animated series. There are only a couple other episodes of TAS that I liked, but I enjoyed this one because of Robert and Sarah April and the lore. Speaking of lore, in the Menagerie, Spock states he served under Captain Christopher Pike for 11 years, 4 months, 5 days, I would assume by that statement that Pike had at least 2 tours of duty as the Enterprise captain after Robert April and before James Kirk.

Collin Freeman

I have that book (somewhere) and read it many years ago. My favorite part was the beginning with a flashback to when April was named as the first captain of the Enterprise.

Collin Freeman

May not be quite the end for TAS. As we speak, a certain company is making plans to produce a live-action version of the animated episodes using actors, advanced deepfake technologies and CGI. Saw a test CGI Arex that looked pretty good.

Mark Chrisco

An enjoyable episode that tips a little more towards fantasy than the usual Star Trek. Alan Dean Foster did novel adaptions of the animated episodes and they were on varying lengths. Most of the books carried short stories of three of the episodes. Some were longer making it two. Counter Clock Incident was one of a few to get a full book length adaption. When you read it, you discover the events of the actual episode are covered in roughly the first half. The rest of it was a story that eventually winds up demonstrating that the events of the episode were some sort of hallucination since the author obviously thought a universe where people were born old out of people who were young was ludicrous.

Mike Rogers

When developing Star trek, one of Gene Roddenberry's early drafts the ship captain was named Robert April. They added Robert April here & said he commanded the Enterprise prior to Pike as a nod to that & Gene was tickled by it so this was the only part of the Animated series he considered canon

Retro Tom

That's in the reboot universe

Retro Tom

The last line of each series... Star Trek TOS: "If only... If only..." Star Trek TAS: "It gave all of us a second life."

James H

Oh yes, of course :) It's funny how they wrote Capellan references in both of the last two episodes.

Dion James Pitman

Also, the flower was from Capella IV, the “Friday’s Child” planet.

James H

101 down, 790 to go lol Fun fact: Beta Niobe was the impending supernova in "All Our Yesterdays", which caused the inhabitants of its orbiting planet Sarpeidon to flee to their planet's earlier time periods. So an extra bit of continuity in addition to the mentions of Babel. And I think this might be the first time San Francisco's importance is hinted at.

Dion James Pitman

Must be one of the side effects

April is African-American now...
