UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TAS ep19 - The Practical Joker

Comments

Yeah, for what it was, this one was a fun, low stakes episode. Certainly seems like the cast had a good time recording their lines, especially Majel. It's pretty ridiculous, doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it's also a kids cartoon. It's also funny that the first time a holodeck, or something very similar, appears in trek, it also immediately becomes a "holodeck malfunction" story. It's funny you mention Shore Leave, because growing up on TNG and seeing holodecks before that particular episode, all I've ever thought watching it is that the whole shore leave planet is obsolete by TNG. Solid comedic episode. "Kirk is a jerk" is the best joke in the episode.

Yay more cat appearances

The OG Holodeck

the kitty is a welcome addition to the team I hope he/she makes more appearances

For me this is a "meh" episode, but considering you all are watching several in a row and this is following the "Bem" episode I can see why it may seem very good lol.

This is probably one of the silliest and least believable episodes of TAS. It's impossible to take seriously. Yet I think it's my favorite. I wonder how the computer managed to create stuff like the fake device on Spock's console or the giant fake Enterprise balloon. But I'll suspend disbelief. KIRK IS A JERK must have been printed in disappearing ink.

I thought it would be nice for them to see the holodeck in TNG, and make the connection themselves. This is a very minor spoiler.... but I think it would be best for it to unfold without any advance whispers. No?

The rec room will be carried over to TNG and other shows and be called the holodeck. In this episode we learn something important: Romulans have desert.

Mike Rogers

That was great. I didn't remember the episode but it was fun! From now on, all my personal e-mails will have "Kirk is a Jerk" in the signature line! Also, I had no idea that a "rec room" concept existed in Star Trek cannon before TNG. Fascinating!!!

This one's a fun episode! I agree with you that it's nice for them to deal with smaller stakes sometimes. Not everything has to be the end of the world / end of the galaxy :-)

Bret Kay

Remember the Rec Room. I don't know if they just needed a place to get some crew members stuck or if they planned to use it more in the future, but future Star Trek writers pick it up and run with it.

That idea of the rec room with simulated environments becomes a common thing in later Trek shows, but I had no idea it was actually first introduced in TAS. When it's reintroduced in TNG it's treated as basically a brand new technology, but I think technically the dialogue is just that it's never been so detailed and accurate before. I wonder now if that was throwing a bone to TAS.

Jeff Cornell

This, Time Trap, Yesteryear, and Beyond The Farthest Star are probably my favorite episodes of TAS. This was I think the second or third episode I ever saw, at the reccomendation was of my friend. Just a couple left guys!

Steven Johnson

Ooh. I'm first for once.
