UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TAS ep18 - Bem

Comments

Yeah, by the end of the episode, "go fuck yourself" is pretty much the sentiment I have toward Bem. I just hope he doesn't take that literally with the whole..............anyway. But yeah, the guy is a headache and a half. I didn't want him seriously hurt or anything, but in Kirk's shoes I'd be wanting him out of my hair ASAP. I understand the aversion to seeing another "god entity" after that trope being so overdone throughout TOS, but at least in this case it was a pretty chill entity. She was basically like "guys, I'm trying to help this civilization advance. Do you mind?" As far as a planet being quarantined, Talos IV is the first that comes to mind, though that was beyond a typical quarantine. Scalos from Wink of an Eye was also quarantined, as was Vendor from The Survivor(the planet with the shapeshifting squids). No doubt, had Kirk not killed him, the planet they left Gary Mitchell on would have been quarantined as well.

Alex, one of my favorite lines from all your reactions so far..."go F yourself!" I laughed so hard because I felt the same way! Awesome!

Lots of TAS Easter eggs in Lower Decks.

Mike Rogers

Lower Decks is great for easter eggs and I will admit that it makes me chuckle from time to time (not near as much as it probably should for a "comedy" trek show, The Orville takes the prize for that). I just think its to far out for it to be considered cannonical, it should be a parody or set in an alternate timeline/universe and I think then it would be more easy to accept. Beckett would have been kicked out of StarFleet in the first episode if it was "real" trek.

I can't wait to you guys do a review of the motion picture. Eagerly waiting!

Yes there will be a recap

Josh (Target Audience)

Not one of the best and Mr Colony man needed a slap round the head

AzoriusMage

Quite simply...one can never get sick of the TNG theme (though I'm sure somebody here could contradict me lol) and by now you may have heard a version of it already ;)

Dion James Pitman

This episode annoyed the hell out of me. Mostly from the BEM character, they way he talked & acted

I know we've already had a conversation about "Lower Decks" in previous comment sections, but this episode in particular made me appreciate how much that show respects specifically the animated series as its predecessor as the animated version of Star Trek. There was an episode of Lower Decks featuring a green alien who could split herself into several parts and persistently referred to herself as "this one", and I just accepted that as part of that specific character/culture in the context of that Lower Decks episode. It's only after watching this TAS episode for the sake of following your reactions that I now realize that entire character was an homage to TAS and specifically this episode.

I'm glad you both enjoyed the first part of this episode. This is my most hated episode of all TAS, I can't stand it, this is the 3rd time I have watched it (in comparison to other episodes, my fave "Yesteryear" I have probably seen about 7 or 8 times). I not only think the story is bad/muddled, but I disliked the BEM character and the long transition shots for time in this episode just make it even worse. Thats my two cents anyways, looking forward to finishing up TAS and starting the movies.

Tristan Rose

"Welcome to Altair four gentlemen, I am to transport you to the residence."

Mike Rogers

Not a fan of this episode. David Gerrold has done better. The Trouble with Tribbles being the obvious one. I assume will be doing an entire TAS recap after watching all of the episodes? The planet naming system is generally based on the name of the planet's sun and then the position of that planet from its sun. For example, Altair IV would be the 4th planet in the Altair solar system. Earth would be Sol III.

Collin Freeman

Agreed. David Gerrold could have done better.

Collin Freeman

BEM is a sci fi acronym for Bug Eyed Monster. David Gerrold had this idea for the never done season 4 live action Star Trek. He saw a circus act where 2 small people linked together to look like one and figured to build an episode around it.

Mike Rogers

Yeah not a favorite

WILLIAM NEW

This is the first appearance of Kirk's middle name. There are conflicting versions of how that came about, but here's the one I find most credible. Supposedly, there was an inside joke during the original series about "the T stands for Tiberius." This was because Gene Roddenberry had produced an earlier show called "The Lieutenant," in which the lead character was named William Tiberius Rice. Now, David Gerrold (the writer of Bem) was also the writer of The Trouble with Tribbles, and he might have heard that joke while hanging around the set and later inserted it into the Bem script. Since Bem, it's been considered canon. (The alternate version, which Gerrold himself has spread, is that the name Tiberius was inspired by the BBC series "I, Claudius," which he had allegedly been watching on PBS. The problem with that story is that "I, Claudius" wasn't made until 1976. Not accusing Gerrold of lying, but the memory can play tricks.) Incidentally, the name "Bem" itself is an inside joke, because in science fiction circles "BEM" is a common abbreviation for "bug-eyed monster."

Ohh this one! I remember this one from when I was young it's so strange. I'm curious to see you're reaction to another god / "these are my children" episode :-)
