UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TAS ep15 - The Eye of the Beholder

Yeah, this one was a miss for me. I think the writing really fails it. Obviously there can be cultures out there that that are far advanced above the federation, but to claim they're hyper intelligent and yet they can't figure out that beings capable of building starships aren't simple animals, or deducing that the kid was transported somewhere else. It's like in Who Watches the Watchers, the Mintakans were very primitive by federation standards, apparently yet to have an industrial revolution, and yet it was obvious to Picard and the federation that they were on the path to being a space faring civilization. On top of that even today, let alone in the 23rd century, zoos are becoming a less popular concept, with a lot of people saying it's wrong to lock up animals for our amusement. IIRC Patrick Stewart didn't even like the idea of Picard's fish because he felt people would be more enlightened by that time than to confine creatures to tanks or cages. Something along those lines. Anyway, I did like Scotty's brief friendship with the little(relatively speaking) alien, but overall I just feel they do a very bad job at selling how smart these aliens are supposed to be.

There is a similar episode of "The Orville". They way they escape is very funny.

This was a good one. I remember it because when I first saw it, I had already seen the Twilight Zone episode with the man in a zoo. I wasn't supposed to watch the Twilight Zone but the reruns were on late at night then and I'd sneak out to watch them 😀 It had Roddy McDowell - he was so good!

They said that the last of the crew left the ship to prosecute the search for their shipmates. HOW DID THEY EXPECT TO GET BACK TO THE SHIP?

There are some good stories in TAS but the short length leaves out a bit too much explanation like how did Scotty achieve all of that? Still enjoyable though.

This is a weird one for me - I don't remember it at all! I've been re-watching TAS first before watching them with your reactions as it's the show I've watched the least over the years. It was like watching a completely new old school Star Trek episode for the first time in years! Now I know how much you guys are having!

Well this was before the times of high profile actors doing voiceovers for animated stuff. He probably felt it was a bit beneath him. And hey...Alec Guiness thought Star Wars was beneath him so... And if you ask voice actors nowadays, they'd be glad if high profile actors never did enter voice over work, since they're stealing their jobs now :D They were different times, and I don't think ANY of the actors are putting their entire heart into these voiceovers to be honest (aside from Jimmy Doohan which loved voiceover work I think) Also.. it's easier to give a good performance if you are acting against another actor. If you're in a booth or at home and you just record a line without any idea on how the other actor performed the line you're responding to, it's very hard to make that sound great. I've worked with voice actors on a pretty large project and these are indeed big challenges. It's up to a director to give them the best context, which is not an easy job. I know, I had to do that :)

You mean the turbo lift that is on a different position on outside of the ship from where it is on the inside shots? ;)

Andreas Schmitt

I don't know if Shatner recording lines on the toilet are true, but I can believe it. To me he didn't put much effort into his performances, I wouldn't be surprised if he had a 1 take rule & as long as he didn't flub his lines he'd just say it once & get in & out

From the author of the much more entertaining A Piece of the Action.

"Is this what you want?" LOL.. your voiceover Interpretation of the aliens in that moment was hilarious haha

This one had a feeling of The Menagerie to me with the zoo and highly intelligent captors.

Collin Freeman

I enjoyed the episode and thought the aliens were rather adorable. Still, someone has to tell me how the child alien fit inside the turbo lift to get t o the bridge.
