UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TAS ep9 - Once Upon a Planet

Comments

Once again, it feels like a case of looking back at a TOS episode and exploring what they could have done if they weren't limited by the technology of the era. As TAS sequels go it's not bad. Little too easy to convince the computer, and it's reasoning for the turn it took was pretty shallow, but it is a kids show after all. In both cases though they did get to have their shore leave, it just happened after the drama of the episode. Nice to see Arex and M'Ress given a little more to do as well.

Sad Jim's Irish friend never turned up. Definitely enjoying TAS more than expected

Also, the final two episodes of Star Trek Continues were titled “To Boldly Go.”

and another turn a phrase turned episode title "These Are The Voyages."

One thing you quicky realise in all Star Trek shows ... shore leave almost never goes to plan!

Thanks for a fun reaction! For years, my mom talked about the episode of TOS when they go back to the shoreleave planet and she couldn't understand why the never show it! Then I purchased TAS and showed her this and she said THATS IT! Memories can play tricks with us. I liked this episode a lot, I like the sequel episodes and I've always loved Shoreleave...Jimmy me boy!

I enjoyed this one. With the A and B Plots snd the TOS style banter and humor it felt the most like a TOS episode

Not to mention the second pilot of TOS which was called "Where no man has gone before"

I watched this for the first time along with y'all, and I liked this one. As opposed to the "Tribbles" sequel episode, this one wasn't just a rehash of the TOS episode, but did something new by making the machine malevolent and having it affect the Enterprise as well as the surface. They took good advantage of the animated format by having the artificial gravity be one of the systems that gets messed with, which is something the live action shows (understandably) almost never feature. I can only think of maybe three times it happened in the classic Trek shows (extremely mild spoilers in this paragraph). A couple episodes in the prequel show Enterprise demonstrating that the technology hasn't been perfected yet at that point in the timeline, and one episode in DS9 featuring an alien from a low-gravity planet who customizes the artificial gravity in her quarters to be more like home. Even in cartoon form, Scotty is still a badass in the big chair. And they gave this show's two new exotic alien officers plenty to say on the bridge, with the big three and Uhura all down on the surface. And they had Kirk-vs-computer ending peacefully by just convincing it that it doesn't actually have to be a jerk. That's peak Star Trek material.

Kind of a disappointing sequel. It just lacked the fun of the original. Part of the problem was that the Tribbles and Harry Mudd animated sequels were both written by their original creators, Theodore Sturgeon had nothing to do with this one and it was done by another writer.

Shore Leave was one of my favourite episodes so this was enjoyable. That said, I think I preferred how they combined two episodes in Yesteryear with it being a sequel to The City on the Edge of Forever and also kind of a prequel to Journey to Babel. The full list of shows after TOS and TAS is: The Next Generation Deep Space Nine Voyager Enterprise Discovery Short Treks Picard Lower Decks Prodigy Strange New Worlds There was a 10 Minute Behind The Scenes segment of TNG called "To Boldly Go" produced around the time of that show's fourth season, as well as a 3 part retrospective of The Original Series made in 2004 where each part focuses on a different season.

One of the better TAS episodes. I give it 8/10. Some of the advantages of the animated show are shown here as Alex pointed out, such as more with Arex, M'Ress, and the artificial gravity not functioning - things they could not have done on TOS. Also liked Josh's little comment throwback to Shore Leave: "Runaway!", as spoken by Finnigan to Kirk in that episode.
