UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TAS ep8 - The Magicks of Megas-tu

Given it also released just before Halloween, I think this was meant to be a follow up or reimagining of Catspaw. There were a lot more options to portray magic in animated form. But overall I think it's just a really weird episode and pretty out of place for Star Trek. Also Kirk defending Lucifer makes his line to Kang in Day of the Dove seem pretty odd in retrospect when he tells him "go to the devil". The stardates in TOS/TAS don't really mean much of anything, but this episode actually has the lowest numbered stardate of any episode in either show, which might seem to suggest it takes place before the rest, but of course that's not the actual intention. They just didn't have any sort of organized system worked out till TNG.

Thanks for your reaction. I'm a little behind but I do look forward to these watch alongs, even when the episodes aren't great.

Nice, you look and sound great. A friend of mine just one day was an evil manager in a PA/NJ area wrestling company. We were a little surprised and didn't know there was this whole other side to him from the nerd hobby we knew him from.

Look up “Alex Daniels wrestling” on YouTube

Boring episode. Where do you wrestle and can it be seen online or YT clips?

I don't think a cartoon was the place to tell this story. If you're going to go with "what if the devil is the good guy", it has to be a relatively deep philosophical analysis, or else it loses all connection to the actual belief in the devil. If you're not wrestling with the underlying ethics and concepts surrounding beliefs about God and the devil, but just make the devil the good guy because it's unexpected, at that point it's just "we took something from the popular religion and turned it upside down, aren't we so subversive and brave." This episode needed the breathing room of a 50+ minute runtime for the big three to have a debate about the devil, the history of human religion in general and the Salem witch trials in particular, and how it all connected back to the situation in front of them. Without that, it's basically just shock value of "the devil's the good guy and the people in pilgrim clothes are the villains".

No wireless tech in case the Cylons turn up

Good to know that in the future we revert back to reel magnetic tapes and punch cards to store data.

Lucifer on Earth to help humans? Ancient Alien Theorists say YES!

I don't think TAS was ever truly popular enough, not that it didn't have an audience, but the irony is the bulk of the audience for TAS would have been the teenagers that were kids when TOS was on the air, so an episode like this probably wouldn't get a lot of moms looking at the TV in horror.

Steven Johnson

"That was weird." Pretty much sums of TAS, overall.

Steven Johnson

Well that was a weird one! 😂 Really enjoying watching TAS for the first time along with you guys!

Been waiting for you to get to this one. A lovable but BS crazy episode. If I remember, Gene was urging the writer to do a story where they meet God. But the network said "nope!" And then he said "how about the devil" and the network was "okay". I wonder if there were some upset parents. As for how many times does superior beings test humanity, wait until you get to TNG.

Mike Rogers

They took a risk with this episode. Lucifer as a good guy in a Saturday morning cartoon!

Mateo Latosa

A rather odd lightweight episode but they can't all be hits I guess.
