UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TAS ep7 - The Infinite Vulcan

Koenig really dug deep and used his imagination writing this one. Lots of cool concepts that could have been interesting in one of the later live action shows. Never really understood the point of the clones being giants, though I guess it's to make them seem unstoppable as this peace imposing militia. An error in the animation I noticed is that right after Spock was abducted, he's shown sitting at his station on the bridge in the overhead shot. A bit of a bizarre episode, but with some work a lot of these plot points could be adapted to work in a 45 minute live action episode. By the mid 90s they could have pulled it off. It is weird to think there's just this giant clone of Spock hanging around on the planet.

Yes I remember lots of cartoons such as the Tarzan one from this era using all the same sound effects and dramatic music

Also they've shown pictures of Kirk and Spock on the series a couple times and they match this shows animated designs.

Yeah, it’s really a German vowel sound that we don’t have in English, so Americans with that name tend to improvise. In German it’s sort of midway between the vowel in “cook” and the vowel in “Kirk.”

The style of animation here is definitely similar in all Filmation cartoons of the 70s and 80s. Lots of closeups, with recycled shots and animation. You can even see that style in a show like He-Man. But most of the time it all looked good, especially the “set” designs, etc.

One of the oddities of TAS was the half face and quarter face closeups. I think that was something Filmation did in other shows. I always thought the half face closeups was to avoid animating mouth movements. On old TV's a lot of the corners, top and bottom were cropped. But with flat HDTVs that show much more picture, you can now see they animated mouth movements on those half close ups.

Mike Rogers

I can vouch for that. I've heard him say it's kay-nig. Though I loved Space 1999 and Cmmdr Koenig was pronounced koh-nig.

As a matter of fact, a recent episode of a Star Trek show (Lower Decks) referenced the giant Spock.

If it hasn't already been said, this episode was written by Walter Koenig (Chekov).

Personally I don’t find that much of a canon problem. Giant Spock could just live out his days there 😂

Josh (Target Audience)

This episode is one that fans always use as an example of why the Animated Series shouldn’t be cannon, that you can’t leave a giant Spock trapped on a planet. I thought this was a good one, a little more complex than some of the others. A bunch of story ideas from this series get repurposed later in Trek. This isn’t one of them.

Gosh those flying plant things were annoying! I really liked Sulu's involvement in this episode. Sulu's interest in Botany (as established in TOS) means that it was very appropriate that he was heavily involved in an episode featuring a planet of sentient plant creatures. That said, I can't decide whether Sulu is lucky or unlucky as he always seems to get in a spot of bother on away missions (almost freezing to death in The Enemy Within, falling victim to brainwashing in The Return of the Archons, being used as a catspaw in Catspaw and being poisoned here). The name of the creature that poisoned Sulu was a Retlaw - Walter spelt backwards lol. And Stavos Keniclius was animated to look like how Walter Keonig looked like at the time lol. The use of a bit of lore was also a nice touch with mentions of the Eugenics Wars, Romulans, Klingons, and the galactic turmoil that existed the Federation. There was also something else mentioned but...[redacted]
