UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TAS ep4 - The Lorelei Signal

TOS (and TASs) Sex Scoreboard The landing party partied so hard they got old. Kirk 12 new +1 Chekov 4 Spock 4 new +1 Bones 3 new +1 Scottie 1 Uhura 1 Extras: Did they shag? YES. Let's look at the evidence. Hot girls.... Wanting looks and clearly desires on overload..... Taking them to bed..... sleepy afterward and spent.... THAT is proof of rollin-pollin' On a second note: the use the transporter to correct a genetic issue causing old age. Can you imagine if that was used again sometime in the future to correct a similar problem. Say like when a Dr exposes herself to a virus that then causes aging. Wow maybe they should use this solution. If they do, I wonder if they would then say that the future time is the first time to try the transporter in that way.

A big problem I always had with TOS is that aside from Scotty, they barely used the rest of the cast outside of the big 3. Uhura in particular had virtually nothing important to do in TOS. Mirror, Mirror was probably the episode where she was most vital. The circumstances of the episode are kind of tailor made to create an excuse for her to take command, but I wouldn't call this episode "woke" in the modern sense, because Uhura very simply did her duty as a starfleet officer, and she did it well. That's exactly how it should be. This episode showed genuine equality, not "gurl power". I also like that the men weren't so far gone that they just went along with what was happening to them, they were just too weakened to fight back. It's also very in keeping with Trek's principles that they actually helped the women escape their situation. But I need to point out, if ships have been disappearing for 150 years and the Enterprise is the 6th(at 27.34 year intervals, it would be 164 years, but it's presumably rounded down), that means that they've killed the crews of 5 ships, including straight up murdering any women serving onboard(which we've seen on both klingon and romulan ships). After all they can't control or drain the life force of women, and if left alive those women would at MINIMUM have reported back the situation and what happened to the ship if they weren't stopped. So it kind of glosses over that those women have a lot of blood on their hands. But still, I like this episode for being the one time Uhura REALLY got to shine and take charge of resolving the situation. Wish there had been more.

Couldn't have said it better

Just for the record, both of the businesses alluded to are owned by the same Belgian company.

Right that’s the future we aspire to. But unfortunately it’s not ours, yet. Here we rail again mythical creatures, mermaids, being African American. Here we topple businesses because they had a drag queen spokesmodel, so that a Mexican business now rules over an American one. In Treks past all this was only resolved after WWIII. And by a chance encounter with vulcans

Let's keep this community insult free shall we? This is Trek after all

A lot of these "the network hated women" stuff is urban legend, often told by Gene himself to spite the network, then retold in good faith by Nichols and others. The truth is that NBC really liked Uhura and those aspects of the show and wanted more of that, documentation shows that. What the networks didn't like was Gene's attitude and his "typically male?" Tendency yo wsnt to put sexy women in skimpy clothes everywhere. That was Gene's doing, not the networks

Here's my take on "the woke" of this episode. I passionately love Star trek and passionately hate woke crap. For me the difference is this: in Trek we got a message that we're strongest as humans when we work together, men women, all races, all individuals according to their strengths, helping eachother overcome our weaknesses, complementing eachother as a team. Nobody is ever blamed, hated, vilified or ridiculed. Woke stuff doesn't build up anyone without simultaneously bringing someone else down. It makes us hate eachother, men against women, women against men, the races and sexual orientations.. it's a blame game and pulling eachother down .. it's the very opposite of Trek. NEVER hated anything where everybody is equal and working together. But that's not what modern media is showing me. What it's showing me is hate and blame and ridicule of one group to benefit another. That's not at all what Trek was about. Trek was about having a black woman on the bridge and nobody even mentioning her race because it didn't matter anymore in the 23rd century. Today's media will non stop tell you how awesome it is that a person is black and female when that's exactly missing the point. Treks point was: it shouldn't matter who you are, if you do your best for the common good. That's why Star Trek was a hopeful future everybody wanted to live in snd that's why modern media is nothing but depressing.

Really like this episode! Finally a chance for the women of TOS to get to do something cool for a change.

In the episode Catspaw, After Kirk, Spock, Scotty and Sulu were all captured, Uhura was the next highest ranked officer. But when she was written to take command of the ship, the TV networks had a fit. A woman can't be in charge. So they took a minor white male character, Desalle, and gave him a promotion, and gave Uhura's dialog to him.

Argenthawke

yeah where's the woke morons

When I heard Uhura say "Taking command of this ship" I knew there was a cheer or two by some fans. I wonder if it would've been possible even a few years before on TOS.

Mike Rogers

Seemed like a comments section invites discussion, but whatever. I just recall people online editing the Captain Marvel poster to make her smile, while on literally 20 previous MCU movie posters the lead character is not smiling.

Joe Concepts

I don't think I said that anywhere. I think I was pretty clear. Regarding the costumes I'll just say there is a lot of irony in current progressive fashion tastes for strong women on film being so conservative that both Imams and nuns would almost approve. But this is not the forum to engage in silly online fights like we are on usenet circa 1996.

Ken R

So... the character isn't woke as long as she's wearing skimpy clothes and smiling all the time?

Joe Concepts

Honestly, I didn't remember this episode (I was a kid the first time and probably drunk the second time I saw it 😅 ), and I really enjoyed this and your reaction. I'm grateful that you're motivating me to watch it again. Thank you!

This is completely different from what is called "woke" today in the new stuff. For starters, like Capt Marvel, Uhura would be covered head to toe because she doesn't have to dress to please you, nor will she smile. Then, like every recent show, this woman will make sure to tell the men she is better and will be written smarter and stronger. ( She- hulk, Rings of Power, ST: Strange New Worlds) Finally, all the traits deemed toxic in men by the woke will be plastered on these women where suddenly it is now merely strong. (everything) Note: this all must happen in every show at once so the pattern is clear as day (see the pint sized terrorist leader miraculously beating men up on Falcon and her clone on Hawkeye.)

Ken R

Oh, and I think what's so funny about the ship flying across in the intro is the angle. It's turned pretty far toward the camera, but is just a moving flat image, with no change in size or perspective as it moves. So instead of looking like it's moving somewhat toward the camera, it looks like the Enterprise is sliding sideways.

Jeff Cornell

"An episode that has the balls to have Nichelle Nichols run the show." No pun intended?

Jeff Cornell

This was written by the writer of Cloudminders and a few other TOS episodes. Gene was very against women taking command of ships even into TNG so they snuck this one past him. This is Nichelle’s favorite episode for obvious reasons.

Jonathan

To your question why they don't take the headbands off - there's a very short clip when Kirk first realizes he's wearing it. He tries to take it off an makes a struggling face and that's it. They quickly show it, but there's no dialog that addresses it.

Bret Kay

But Chapel takes Spock's off easily, so maybe only women can remove them.

James H

Glad you enjoyed this one! TAS can be a little uneven, but they do have some good ones. I especially like that they ended up helping in the end. Wink of an Eye in TOS is the worst one for that. They had the cure for the time acceleration and beamed the Scalosians down before they revealed that and took it themselves. And then flew off and lamented that they were going to die! lol Harsh! This episode is a much better resolution to that too!

Bret Kay

I had to pause the reaction when it cut to McCoy and Alex went "FLOWERS!?" I don't know why. The idea of McCoy just getting all mushy over a field of flowers amused me. "Would this be called woke?" No, because these are actual characters getting their time to shine. Chapel and Uhura don't stand around and talk about the Patriarchy. They just see a crisis and go to work, like anyone else on board would. I know it was a joke, but that distinction often gets lost in that discussion. What gets called "woke" today versus a real feminist moment from years past. It's one of the powerful messages of Star Trek, it doesn't matter which sex you are, or what species you are, if you're a starfleet officer you have a duty and you are expected to perform it, full stop.

Steven Johnson

Kirk is shown trying to take off the headband and failing.

Mateo Latosa

(I saved the first for Michael Owen.)
