EARLY ACCESS - Top 15 Episodes of Star Trek The Original Series RANKED

I feel your pain when it comes to picking top favorite episodes for TOS. I have my top 2 favorites, but after that things get muddied, jumbled, and rearranged so much over time as i rewatch them - also as I get older and come to the show with different experiences and perspectives. Something for everyone? Indeed, and more.

Collin Freeman

Man I need more practice typing! But what I have come to understand is after you’ve gone a little while and come back and watch some episodes, I still enjoy the feeling like an old friend is back and enjoy the ride. Really have enjoyed rewatching these episodes with you. Thanks Robert

Continued And sci-fi and so many more styles to choose from. Not everyone has to or will love all the same ones you like and that’s OK.

Robert Elliott

I believe one reason TOS has such a following is there is something for everyone. If you like action

What great lists, these are all such good episodes. It was fun to hear your favorites. Thank you!

I’m pretty sure 95-99% of what you see in the director’s cut is the original practical effects, so it’s not as radical a difference as old vs. new effects in TOS. Highly recommend the director’s cut and I’m glad they’re watching it.

Out of all episodes, I’ve probably watched “Turnabout Intruder” the most times. Incredible over-the-top Shacting.

Same way for me on City. Great piece of television, maybe even “objectively” the best episode, but a little short on the kinds of things I look for in Star Trek.

James H

Ah, the long ending from Alex instead of the new one (“We’re done”)!

Josh, as one who composes music and collects soundtrack recordings I love that the scores play so much into your favorites... I don't think it's a spoiler to tell you that it is an aspect of the first film that you will not be disappointed in. Speaking of that film, I know you guys like to recreate the experience of first watching it the way the original audiences did but I would strongly urge you to go with the director's cut on that one when you start doing the films... the audiences in 1979 basically saw an unfinished film due to having to rush to meet the release deadline. Also, if you guys want that sequel to Mirror, Mirror, the award-winning fan series Star Trek Continues provides that beautifully, if non-canonically (is that a word?).

I still believe Charlie X even though he has the power of the God like species that raised him is one of Trek's best horror episodes. Everything from the music, the lighting and the actor who played Charlie's reaction went from playful with synthetic meatloaf becoming real turkeys, to creepy pulling thoughts of what pleases people (Janis' favourite perfume not available in ship stores); to full on bizarre (pictures of Janis she never posed for in his card trick segment). To also not being able to handle losing (melting the white chess pieces) or loss (being rejected by Janis) as well as having others laugh or talk about him to where he made them vanish into nothing. But when he became truly pissed is when it became the thing of nightmares, changing the young woman into being old, the young girl simply asking, "what's wrong, Charlie?" Being transformed into an iguana but the scariest of all was when he fully removed people's faces being fully closed off from top to bottom in a thick layer of skin being unable to see, talk or even breathe, and this makes it into one of my top episodes. As they clearly wanted everyone of all ages to be able to watch it and 1960s prime time it was just at the edge of being a Twighlight Zone type of episode and if they had more time and focused on a fully adult audience I think they easily could've made it have even more horror type elements. A modern remake would be awesome.

Surprised "Return To Tomorrow" didn't make any of the lists considering how different it was having Spock as a villain. I lean heavily into season one and would have had "Menagerie", "Conscience of the King" and "Charlie X" all in my top 15, perhaps even ten. "Turnabout Intruder" would be on my list as well.

I remember those marathons City or Tribbles always won. I think the Klingon and Romulan episodes are so big on our lists because we have explored those species so much more in the other shows. That’s part of the fun of seeing their take as first time watchers.

Jonathan

Josh, I totally agree with City on the Edge of Forever for the reasons you said it is probably about 10 for me. It would be interesting if you did an extra segment after other series where you do an all time Star Trek list. So we can see how many TOS episodes would stay on the list compared to other series.

Jonathan

That was quite interesting to see how the lists compared. Most interesting to see the moments of near synchronicity between you guys and the patrons. Honestly, in general, making those lists are quite trying. I grew up watching Star Trek in the early 90s, and there were often Marathons, or Megathons of Star Trek through an afternoon. They were "viewers choice" with call in voting. I remember one that had a woman in a TNG Era Klingon outfit selling a pen (?). Episodes like Tribbles, Space Seed, City, Balance of Terror, Corbomite, Amok Time, Naked Time, Squire of Gothos, and Doomsday Machine were the common choices. This is why episodes like Is There In Truth No Beauty didn't really occur to me as stand outs, Season 3 seldom got any love. Maybe Day of the Dove or Spectre of the Gun. One thing I've noticed is you guys aren't big on Romulans or Klingons. I will be very curious going forward if you warm up to them. I know it's not like a hatred, but every episode with them seemed to not do it for you guys very much, with the exception of Enterprise Incident, that is.
